Knot on the pine indicates a weak point in the wood

Load path concentrates on a s i n g l e p o i n t w h e n i n compression (at the knot) because it travels shorter distance

-  Wood without knots are exceptionally strong as the nature of the grains spread the load evenly across the span of the wood

-  Pine wood deflects when

load is applied and springs back when released, unlike steel- deforms after certain point

We decided to put our beam on top of each other b e c a u s e l o a d would have to t r a v e l l o n g e r distance, hence p u t t i n g l e s s stress on a single beam

Plywood failed when 500kg of load was applied

Due to its strength which is naturally weaker than pine wood Also because we didn’t put fixings on one side where it failed

Another group used the same structure but had 3 pinewood 800kg was applied- due to a third piece of wood, longer distance for load path to travel

Beam failed due to tension at the bottom of beam
