  • 7/29/2019 Week 5 - How the games went...

    1/20

The diving of Ashley Youngbut Palace werent going to score

Ian Holloway taking his Crystal Palace side to Old Trafford was always going to be a tricky fixture for the Eagles and

Manchester United were almost certain to keep a clean sheet. The only chance Palace had was to keep a clean

sheet. The Red Devils hammered Palace with crosses and shots from all over the place.

    SHOTS CRYSTAL PALACE

Crystal Palace had sight of the goal four times but De Gea wasnt forced into a save.

    CROSSES MAN UTD

The ball was floated into the box numerous times and with the addition of Fellaini I expect many more goals at Old

Trafford than the current average per game.

    AERIAL DUELS

  • 7/29/2019 Week 5 - How the games went...

    2/20

With Fellaini joining, the midfield headers will be won a lot more and if used correctly possession will be retained

    more efficiently.

  • 7/29/2019 Week 5 - How the games went...

    3/20

    Pardews success with two strikers

    SHOTS ASTON VILLA

Aston Villa, without Benteke, could be in serious trouble they were very fortunate to score against Newcastle andtheir shots on goal havent been troubling the opposition goalkeeper much.

    SHOTS NEWCASTLE

Newcastle deserved their three points with Guzan keeping the Villans in the game with a few crucial saves. The key

to Newcastle scoring is playing two strikers up top in a 4-4-2 turn 4-2-4, when Pardew tries anything else they seem

    to struggle.

BALANCED GAME PASS COMPLETION/TERRITORY/TAKE ONS/AERIAL DUELS WRITTEN STATS

The Aston Villa versus Newcastle match was always going to be tight with both sides completing 78% and 79% of

their passes respectively. Newcastle had the slight territory advantage of 50.2% suggesting the ball was in the Villa

half slightly more. Each team utilising fast wide players and the take on success reflects how willing they are to run at

the opponent with Villa completing 11/22 take ons and Newcastle 14/25. The aerial threat posed by each team was

also quite even with Aston Villa being successful in 24/46 which is a slight advantage over the Magpies.

  • 7/29/2019 Week 5 - How the games went...

    4/20

Jols men throw it away at the end

    SHOTS FULHAM

By the amount of shots on target by Fulham, at home, its no surprise they were unable to score more than one and

secure the three points comfortably no wonder they drew 1-1

    SHOTS WEST BROM

West Brom had the more promising opportunities and with a bit more luck the Baggies wouldve clinched the three

points. On another day this outcome couldve been very different.

    DEFENSIVE THIRD PASSES FULHAM

  • 7/29/2019 Week 5 - How the games went...

    5/20

When winning a game for so long retaining the ball in your own half is one way of wasting time, but instead of

attacking and attempting to kill the game off, retaining possession was the unlucky time wasting decision made by

    Jols men.

    TERRITORY WRITTEN STATS

West Brom actually dominated the territory but 1.3% using the ball in an advanced area more efficiently.

  • 7/29/2019 Week 5 - How the games went...

    6/20

Newly promoted teams cancel each other out

    SHOTS HULL

You would expect the two promoted teams to play free-flowing attacking football in a match they expect to pick

points up in. Its no surprise the Tigers, at home, were able to get so many shots away, albeit having many blocked.

    SHOTS CARDIFF

Cardiff were not so adventurous with their shooting, but its goals that count and the Bluebirds snatched the point in

what some might call a relegation battle come the end of the season.

    PASSES HULL

  • 7/29/2019 Week 5 - How the games went...

    7/20

Hull seemed confident in knocking the ball about in the middle of the park, but as soon as any creation was requiredthe ball failed to get into the box.

    PASSES CARDIFF

Cardiff however were fortunate enough to craft opportunities in and around the area utilising the width more

    efficiently too.

BALANCED GAME CROSS SUCCESS/TAKE ONS/TACKLES SUCCESS WRITTEN STATS

Hull were successful in 10/27 crosses and Cardiff got to the end of 5/14 attempted. The teams were also successful

in 5/9 and 6/9 take ons respectively suggesting passing was the modus operandi. The tackle success in a passing

match often dictates the possession and score, Hull made 13/19 tackles and Cardiff made 10/15 suggesting a

rather balanced match and a draw seemed fair.

  • 7/29/2019 Week 5 - How the games went...

    8/20

Hughes passing play holds City to the draw

    SHOTS STOKE

In what appeared to be a balanced game Man City only able to get three shots on target on what looked like an

uninspiring attacking performance. Players were rested for Europe and a couple defensive injuries cost Man City in

    this match.

    SHOTS MAN CITY

The new look Stoke has got them playing a better possession style game but still doing what they do well; good

defensive organisation and the ability to shoot from distance. A 0-0 draw in this match was probably fair but Man

    City shouldve snatched it.

    AERIAL DUELS

  • 7/29/2019 Week 5 - How the games went...

    9/20

The new and improved Stoke still sees them doing what theyre known for and winning a large percentage of the

matches headers saw them keep the ball and win it back enough to keep a clean sheet against Man City.

  • 7/29/2019 Week 5 - How the games went...

    10/20

    Norwich lack finishing touch

    SHOTS NORWICH

Tottenhams defence have been strong so far this season keeping very tight and no letting the opposition get shots

away and Norwichs poor attacking movement and supply let to them to another poor attacking performance, only

    getting one shot on target.

PASSES TOTTENHAM AND NORWICH (AND SUCCESS) WRITTEN STATS

Tottenham were successful in completing 570/653 passes (87%) whereas Norwich were only able to complete

196/289 (68%) suggesting the 2-0 Spurs win as just.

    AERIAL DUELS

Tottenham look strong in the air in defensive areas but not so fortunate out wide or upfront suggesting a more likely

    style attacking on the floor.

  • 7/29/2019 Week 5 - How the games went...

    11/20

Tottenham completely dominated the stats and heavily deserved their victory.

  • 7/29/2019 Week 5 - How the games went...

    12/20

Possession not for Martinez, Mourinhos style comes undone

    SHOTS CHELSEA

Under Mourinho Chelsea have been taking a lot of shots but not enough are getting on the target despite the

    investment in Samuel Etoo.

    LONG PASSES EVERTON

Even without Fellaini, Everton are able to put the ball forward efficiently having more success spreading it out wide.

    LONG PASSES CHELSEA

  • 7/29/2019 Week 5 - How the games went...

    13/20

Chelsea were largely unsuccessful in playing long balls forward with the only real success coming in giving the ball

    out to the left.

    HEADED CLEARANCES

Jagielka and Distin have formed quite a comfortable partnership over the past few years and attempting to beat

them in the air will be a challenge for any side.

    TAKE ONS EVERTON

  • 7/29/2019 Week 5 - How the games went...

    14/20

Evertons ability to beat players through the middle will be instrumental in beating any side as it will create the break

to make chances and goal scoring opportunities.

  • 7/29/2019 Week 5 - How the games went...

    15/20

    Di Canio outdone again

    PASSES ARSENAL

Arsenal have once again passed a team into submission, and despite having the less shots, winning the match

against Sunderland comfortably. The new man Ozil being fundamental in the victory from the centre of the park.

Like most games Arsenal created several chances are were fortunate to score three well finished goals inside the

    area.

  • 7/29/2019 Week 5 - How the games went...

    16/20

To overcome Arsenal long balls into the space behind their full backs is essential but Sunderland were once again

depressing, Di Canio will struggle to win many games playing like this.

  • 7/29/2019 Week 5 - How the games went...

    17/20

    Tight defences dominate

    CLEARANCES SOUTHAMPTON

When playing West Ham the likelihood the ball will enter your box from crosses is very high. Maintaining a solid back

line with more central players dominating the air will prevent any nod downs or headers on goal. Obviously stopping

the cross all together is the best route in preventing balls into the middle however.

    CLEARANCES WEST HAM

West Ham made more defensive clearances, as a percentage, than Southampton and Allardyces men are never

likely to retain possession away from home with direct attacks always more probable.

    INTERCEPTIONS SOUTHAMPTON

  • 7/29/2019 Week 5 - How the games went...

    18/20

The game fizzled out into a bore 0-0 draw as both teams were able to win the ball back up the pitch preventing any

clear cut chances to be dictated.

    INTERCEPTIONS WEST HAM

With both teams intercepting passes in the oppositions half its no wonder the game ended in a draw.

BALL RECOVERIES SOUTHAMPTON AND WEST HAM WRITTEN STATS

The ball was recovered 38 times by Southampton and 39 times by West Ham, reiterating how balanced the match

    was.

  • 7/29/2019 Week 5 - How the games went...

    19/20

    Shelvey versus Shelvey

    ATTACKING DASHBOARD SHELVEY

Shelvey was all over the place in the 2-2 with Liverpool, having an influence in every goal scored.

    PASSES SWANSEA

Even against the team who were top at the time Swansea were able to dominate possession and get the most shots

    on goal.

BALL RECOVERIES SWANSEA AND LIVERPOOL WRITTEN STATS

The ball was recovered 45 and 48 times respectively showing the amount of lose passes in this four goal tied

    bonanza.

    INTERCEPTIONS SWANSEA

  • 7/29/2019 Week 5 - How the games went...

    20/20

Swansea were able to prevent a loss against Liverpool with good interceptions made in dangerous areas.
