Week 5: - Manage Your Time. Calendar Time to Study! Time Management is a part of :

Study Skills Handouts – Look for these handouts on the display rack in the Learning Skills and

Tutoring Center located in the LRC – Learning Resource Center, LRC 144

Time Management Focuses on the following: http://www.scc.losrios.edu/learningskillstutoring/study-

skills-handouts/

Time Management

Knowing how to manage your time is a necessity in order for you to meet the various and numerous

demands of college.

Schedule your time by taking the following steps:

Create a time schedule by charting the days and hours of your week to include time

for courses, study, work, sleep, meals travel time, and recreational activities

Maintain a weekly appointment book to include due dates for assignments, tests,

study group meetings, appointments, and other activities

Keep a daily to-do list for each of the week that prioritizes tasks which must be

completed that day. Check off items as they are completed

Give consideration to the following:

Try to schedule study time for a subject just before or just after the class meets

Schedule study time for your most difficult subjects when you are most alert

Do not schedule study time for one subject for too long at one time. Change to

another subject, e.g., from Sociology to Math

Do not schedule exceedingly long study sessions. Few people can study with any

effectiveness for more than three hours without a substantial break

Consider how you learn best, the best time of day to schedule certain tasks, and your

personal likes and dislikes:

If you know you expect to take a half-hour coffee break some time between 9 and 10

am every morning, do not schedule that time as an hour of study

Do not expect to get up early in the morning, expend your energies in exhausting

activities all day, and then still expect to study at night. Do your studying when you

are alert and energetic. “Run around” when you need to relax

Decide whether you are a “night” person or a “day” person and arrange your

schedule accordingly, be honest in your evaluation of yourself.

Do no rationalize that you can study well with many enticing distractions such as

television or conversation. Distractions should not be within your sensory sphere

When you have developed a realistic, balanced schedule, stick to it:

Discipline yourself to follow your schedule

Avoid allowing yourself to be drawn away from scheduled tasks

Next Week – Check Out Counseling Services!

Workshop Descriptions

Getting Started

This workshop gives an overview of “Prewriting”—the steps successful writers often take before they start

writing a paper.

Summarizing, Quoting, and Paraphrasing

Many courses ask students to use summary, direct quotes, or paraphrases to present other writers’ ideas and

relate these ideas to their own opinions. This workshop helps students understand the similarities and

differences between these three writing skills and gives students practice using them.

Structure of an Essay (*ENGWR 51)

This workshop provides a basic brush-up on how to structure an academic essay. Students will get an in-depth

overview of an essay’s introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion and learn about the purpose and

common features of each paragraph. They will also learn how this structure relates to the grading standards

for ENGWR 51 at SCC.

Thesis Statements

This workshop helps students understand what a thesis statement is and why it’s important for academic

writing. Students will get an opportunity to discuss and practice writing effective thesis statements.

Run-ons, Fragments, and Comma Splices

Run-ons, fragments, and comma splices are extremely common sentence errors, and in this workshop, students will learn how to identify them as well as get practice with multiple ways to fix them.

Editing for Clarity

After revising the content or “ideas” in an essay, many successful writers review their grammar to ensure their sentences are clear and make sense. Becoming aware of the common types of errors we make as individual writers can help us fix our own errors. This workshop will help students search for the same type of error throughout a whole piece of writing and give students practice with different ways to correct those errors for clearer sentences.

Organizing Your Essay

In academic writing, organization refers to the way paragraphs are arranged in an essay, and sometimes, the way sentences are arranged in a paragraph. Effective organization allows a reader to understand a writer’s message and flow clearly from one point to another. This workshop will help students learn how to organize an essay and practice using transitions to move from paragraph to paragraph.

Subject-Verb Agreement

This workshop will help students define subject-verb agreement and will give them practice identifying and

correcting this type of grammatical error in writing.

Timed Writing

Many courses at SCC require timed writing, which can feel overwhelming or nerve-racking—even for

experienced writers! This workshop helps students learn strategies to manage their time effectively,

understand written assignments more clearly, and structure an essay with a purpose so they can finish a timed

essay confidently and on time.
