In 2011, the Cuisinez trade fair is making a very welcome comeback after a three-year break. The initiative for this renaissance is down to the TV channel M6. With its hit programmes such as Un Dîner presque parfait (Come Dine With Me), Top Chef and M.I.A.M M6 has demonstrated a real passion for cooking. In fact, in line with its former reputation as “the little channel that’s going places”, M6 has long since proved its expertise in this domain and was the first French channel to give this innovative concept a real go.

Based on the know-how the channel has acquired over the past few years, its subsidiary M6 Interactions has teamed up with Reed Expositions (the French leader in staging trade fairs for professional and public visitors alike) to create an event that is unique from start to finish. It will transform the Porte de Versailles Exhibition Centre (Parc des Expositions) in Paris into a gigantic kitchen, where food fans will be able to give free rein to their cooking skills, from Thursday 6 October to Sunday 9 October. More than 50,000 visitors are expected to attend.

As Nicolas de Tavernost, Chairman of the Management Board of Groupe M6, explains: “Groupe M6 and cooking is a story of taste that has plenty of juice left in it yet, so it seemed totally logical to us to take that TV food experience into a trade fair setting. Members of the public attending the fair will be able to share with all the participating professionals the gastronomic values that our programmes strive to convey, namely conviviality, sharing, a passion for food, self-fulfilment and wellbeing”.

Groupe M6 has always been a trailblazer when it comes to expanding its wide range of diversification activities and to leverage its strong brands. The trade fair “Cuisinez avec M6” (Get Cooking With M6) underlines this spirit. Drawing inspiration from Anglo-American cooking shows, especially those aired by the BBC in the United Kingdom, M6 brought in the best professionals around to organise and bring together all the partners it needed to bring the project to fruition. Now, after nearly a year of hard toil, the team has successfully cooked up a top-quality programme, combining contributions by top chefs, celebrity food experts and outstanding contestants from the channel’s cookery programmes.

Paris’ gigantic kitchenM6 is arranging the trade fair “Cuisinez avec M6” (Get Cooking With M6), a landmark event that is an absolute must for anyone interested in cooking and will focus on fine food, featuring the chefs well-known from the channel’s various cooking shows.France - 6 October 2011

On the menu, apart from product tastings, will be the chance to take part in live shows, workshops or cooking competitions hosted by more than 150 leading professionals, including talented Chef and owner of a Parisian gourmet restaurant Cyril Lignac, who has become one of the “channel faces” of M6, but also Michelin-star decorated Chefs and judges on the Top Chef and Un Dîner presque parfait panels such as Jean-François Piège, Thierry Marx, Christian Constant, Philippe Etchebest and Jean Sulpice. So the event will be a great opportunity for members of the public to meet their food idols and get cooking with them.

Former participants from the shows Top Chef and Un Dîner presque parfait will also be on hand, together with respective winners of the 2010 and 2011 Top Chef editions Romain Tischenko and Stéphanie Le Quellec, but also Pierre-Sang Boyer, finalist in Top Chef 2011 and Grégory Cuilleron, winner of Un Dîner presque parfait in 2009. And there will be plenty on offer for kids as well, including the chance to take part in hands-on workshops specifically designed to train up those inexperienced taste buds.

Thierry Desmichelle, Managing Director of M6 Interactions, explains that there were several reasons for organising the “Cuisinez avec M6” fair: “First and foremost, the fair is about spotlighting some of our strong brands such as Top Chef and Un Dîner presque parfait and bringing them to life. At the same time we’ll be showcasing our celebrity food experts. The

idea is to beat everyone else and be the first to stake a claim in the domain of cooking events“. Thanks to a business model based both on revenues from exhibitors, partners and ticket sales, Thierry Desmichelle also hopes to sell advertising space that will generate revenue for the channel’s advertising arm and thereby also significant operating income.

“Cuisinez avec M6” trade fair will open on Thursday 6 October 2011 under the high patronage of the French Ministry of Agriculture and Food and in the presence of Frédéric Lefèbvre, the French secretary of state for trade, crafts, small and medium-sized enterprises, tourism

and services at the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Industry and Employment.

On top of this live event for the general public, M6 will of course be scheduling special programmes spotlighting the event. On Friday 7 October, viewers will be served up an edition of 100% Mag specially shot on location at the fair, and there will also be numerous pieces about it aired on the news. Furthermore, RTL Radio, the fair’s media partner, will devote a considerable share of its content during the event to the art of cooking.

Both executives expressed their belief that television will continue to play a major role in people’s lives going forward. “Television is and remains the leading medium,” said Gerhard Zeiler, adding that this is why he isn’t worried when people share their thoughts about TV programmeson Twitter or Facebook. Zeiler emphasised that linear TV use has increased in nearly all countries, and that’s not even including non-linear usage, which is also on the rise.

On the technology front, two things have changed in particular: “The quality of television has improved,” Zeiler remarked, referring to the development of flat screens, HD and 3D television. And secondly, the market entry barriers for new players in the TV market are coming down. “The distribution market is already open for business,” said Hans-Holger Albrecht. “The future belongs to the Internet as a distribution channel.” This gives companies direct access to consumers – without the detour via cable operators, for instance. At the same time, however, competition is increasing as viewers’ brand loyalty diminishes. Albrecht, who recently visited Google and Facebook in the US, said: “Talking to Google executives,

you realise how they see the world: they want to achieve dominance in the audiovisual world, a dominance they already have in the online search sector. Youtube is their brand for content, while Google TV serves as the technology platform.“ Facebook, Apple and Amazon have similar plans, Albrecht said, so these players “are clearly rivals.”

The strength of TV companies, he continued, is primarily their content, which the new competitors don’t yet have. Google for one has announced it plans to invest $500 million in content. Zeiler says: “That’s not even one-fifth of what we spend on content per year – that

doesn’t scare us.” Albrecht also pointed out that the worldwide dominance of Hollywood productions is diminishing: the strength of TV broadcasters lies above all in local content, as well as in linear television for major events and sport broadcasts. Another advantage, according to Albrecht, is that here in Europe one can closely monitor developments in America to prepare for possible threats.

Gerhard Zeiler added: “We won’t make the mistake of pooling all power in a single place. In music, this was the case with Apple’s I-Tunes. This won’t happen in television. Not even Google will manage to achieve that.” He underscored that RTL Group is “platform-neutral” and therefore it must be ensured that there are enough platforms and competition: “We are interested in as many people as possible watching our content.” Zeiler also underscored the fact that there are plans to collect a small portion of the income that platform operators generate with content from TV companies.

In summary, he said: “Three factors are necessary to secure the future of television in the digital world: first, net neutrality must be ensured – telecoms providers must not be allowed to curb the speed if people are watching a lot of videos online. Second, the battle against piracy must be continued in an effective way. And third: we need many platform operators who are independent from each other, so as not to repeat the mistake made by the music industry.”

The final episode of American Idol’s season ten won in the ‘Outstanding Sound Mixing For A Variety Or Music Series Or Special’, and ‘Outstanding Technical Direction, Camerawork, Video Control For A Series’ categories. The show, which is co-produced by FremantleMedia North America and 19 Entertainment, had been up for an impressive ten Emmys in total.

Deadliest Catch, which follows a group of extreme fishermen hunting in the unforgiving waters of Alaska’s Bering Sea, picked up Emmys in the ‘Outstanding Reality Programme’, ‘Outstanding Cinematography for Reality Programming’, ‘Outstanding Sound Mixing for Nonfiction Programming’ and ‘Outstanding Picture Editing for Reality Programming’. It won all the awards it was nominated for.

This year, it was RTL Television’s turn to organise the Deutscher Fernsehpreis awards gala, its fourth stint doing so. RTL Television CEO Anke Schäferkordt chaired the award’s board this year, while Nazan Eckes and Marco Schreyl hosted the glamorous gala with the support of other well-known presenters. The gala culminated in the presentation of an Honorary Award to Joachim Fuchsberger (85) for his lifetime achievement.

RTL Television won the prize for ‘Best Sports Programme’ for RTL Boxen and in particular for the broadcast of the Wladimir Klitschko vs David Haye match. Teamworx and RTL Television also came away with ‘Best Miniseries’ for Hindenburg. The lavish two-part historical movie by Philipp

Kadelbach (Director) prevailed over Go-West– Freiheit um jeden Preis and Der kalte Himmel. The judges were especially impressed by Benedikt Herforth and Denis Behnke’s production design and special effects. The Teamworx production Homevideo won ‘Best TV movie’ for strong screen writing and directing as well as the performances of its top-notch cast, as the judges noted in their statement. Its lead actor Jonas Nay also won the ‘Förderpreis’ (Young Talent Award) for his performance as a teenager, who becomes a victim of cyber-mobbing due to an unfortunate series of coincidences and ultimately feels there is no way out of the situation other than suicide. Homevideo has already aired on Arte and will be broadcast on ARD at 20:15 on Wednesday

19 October. Teamworx Managing Director Nico Hofmann says: “The two awards in the top categories ‘Best Miniseries’ and ‘Best TV Movie’ fill me with pride – especially because of the breadth of skill Teamworx demonstrates here. On the one hand an epic, spectacularly told history thriller, on the other our intense contribution to an up-to-the-minute topic: cyber-mobbing among teens.”

ARD won eleven prizes in all (including Arte and the third channels), while RTL Television came away with two. ZDF, Sat1, ProSieben and Kabel Eins won one award each. The Deutscher Fernsehpreis has been presented since 1999 by ARD, RTL Television, Sat1 and ZDF to honour outstanding services rendered to television. This year, the awards presentation took place on 2 October at the Coloneum in Cologne.

Katy Perry’s Firework video, which was produced by FremantleMedia company Radical Media, was crowned ‘Video of the Year’ at the MTV Video Music Awards 2011. The video beat off competition from Adele, Bruno Mars, Beastie Boys and Tyler, The Creator to take the top award.

Talkback Thames, FremantleMedia’s UK production arm, won the ‘Indie of the Year Award’ at the Media Guardian Edinburgh International Television Festival Channel of the Year Awards 2011. The awards are voted for by delegates of the event, which is attended by over 2,000 people representing the full spectrum of the television industry. It’s the first time the Indie of the Year category has run, and Talkback Thames was up against other production companies including Kudos, Shine and Zeppotron.

The Teamworx production Schicksalsjahre cleaned up at the Seoul International Drama Awards, winning the TV Movie and Best Director categories. Miguel Alexandre personally accepted the prize for Best Director at the awards gala, which was broadcast live on Korean television. The two-part miniseries will be aired on the Korean channel KBS. The Seoul International Drama Awards are regarded as one of the foremost TV festivals in East Asia.

In France, M6 received a ‘Special Mention’ from the Fondation pour l’enfance for the format Kid ettoi, a programme which is broadcasted every Saturday at 7:55 at M6 Kid. The magazine

answers questions in which nearly all children are interested (How will fashion be this winter? How do I successfully survive my first pyjama party?) or more serious questions (How do I safely surf in the internet? How do I react to attempts at blackmail?). La Fondation pour l’enfance annually honours the best TV formats that build viewer awareness for issues in youth protection and the need to protect minors.

W9 also scored at the International Film and Multimedia Festival in Frankfurt. Fast Club, a Montagne Rogue-produced show hosted by Stéphane Rotenberg and Romain Thievin, took first prize in the ‘Best Reportage and Documentary TV’ category at the 10th International Film and Multimedia Festival in Frankfurt, prevailing among 297 candidates. The awards were presented on 15 September at the opening of the International Automobile Fair. Fast Club is broadcast on W9 Saturdays at 12:10.

In radio, the French website RTL.fr is among the top ten most popular international French websites in spring 2011 in the ‘News/Current Events, General Information’ category. This was determined in the Study “NetObserver” conducted by Harris Interactive, as published at the end of August. RTL.fr is in fact the leading radio website in this category.

Across the border in Belgium, RTL-TVI scored five awards for two productions at the Festival de la Fiction TV de la Rochelle. The jury honored François Berléand for two fiction productions soon to be broadcast on RTL-TVI. The Belgian-French television film and co-production of RTL-TVI and Nexus BXL/USA won the prizes for Best Television Film Comedy and the ‘Best Artistic Director’. The three episodes of BXL/USA will soon be broadcast on RTL-TVI. The made-for-television film Mister Bob also won three awards: ‘Best Male Actor’ and ‘Best Realisation’, as well as the Label Poitou Charente in September.

Viasat, the Modern Times Group’s free and Pay-TV operator in Scandinavia and the Baltic States, won the CSI Award 2011 for ‘Best Outside Broadcast or Playout Technology or Service’. The award-winning playout center was installed by Luxembourg-based Broadcasting Center Europe.
