Lindisfarne Lunchtime Chess ClubThis year 4P has taken great delight in hosting the Lindisfarne Lunchtime Chess Club. Inaugural members Jake Frazer, Patrick Sheard and club champion Lachlan Lane are regularly joined by an interested crowd keen on challenging friends and foes alike at the “thinking person’s” game. The year started out with one meeting a week, but due to great interest, fixtures are often held daily (depending on what Mr Pettit has for lunch) However we will definitely be there on Mondays and Fridays at lunchtime by the handball courts, bring your lunch and check you there (mate!)Not only is joining us for a game a nice way to spend a relaxed lunchtime outside in the shade with new friends, regularly playing chess WILL raise your IQ, exercise both sides of your brain, increase your creativity, improve your memory and verbal skills, increase problem-solving skills, improve your reading skills, improve your concentration, grow dendrites (think back to Brain Expo), and teach planning and foresight! Just look at Mr Pettit. WOW!SEE YOU SOON.

Grandparent’s Day

On Tuesday 17 September each primary class welcomed grandparent’s into their classroom for this year’s Grandparent’s Day, so we in 4P decided that it would be a great opportunity to delve a little more deeply into our family histories. We devised a series of questions that we could ask our grandparents, and then turned our findings into a written report. Students in 4P were extremely lucky to have had so many grandparents visit. We even had enough to act as surrogate grandparents for the one or two students whose grandparents were unable to attend.

My Grandmother by Tori Jones

My grandmother’s name is Maureen which is an Irish mixture of the names Mary and Anne. She was born in 1944 in Sydney while her father was away at army camp. She grew up in a brick house with a nice green yard. It had three bedrooms and 1 bathroom. Her bedroom was small so she didn’t have to share with her 2 sisters. They used to play together and go out together and they were both spoilt and my grandmother felt left out. She didn’t get an allowance and had to wipe the dishes. She went to a Catholic College and maths was her favourite subject. My grandmother had cats as pets. She was very active and never stopped moving around. She used to play and play sport but only ever used to wear dresses. She liked to have a biscuit if she was given one and fruit and her favourite toys were her dolls. She used her father’s tool shed as a cubby house. Her mum was born in 1904. Her mum’s family had a huge market garden where they grew vegetables, had beautiful flower gardens, chooks, draft horses and used to milk cows.

Her dad was born in Sydney in 1901. He was strict, she used to get in trouble for playing on the road, but he took her everywhere, he was a plumber. My grandmother remembers that her grandfather was Scottish and he used to say “Don’t fall over the balcony!” and her grandmother was a very little and a lady. She had cats.

My Grandfather by Hamish McFie

My grandfather’s name is Wayne Francis. He was born in 1945 in Murwillumbah. He has one brother who was born in 1939.The neighbourhood he lived in was sparsely populated. He lived in a Queenslander house on a farm. The house had three bedrooms. His bedroom was on the verandah and got cold sometimes in the winter. His first memory was being sat in a banana case while his mother milked the cow. His parents were born in Australia and were of European origin. They were not too strict, but he got disciplined when he misbehaved on the school bus. They earned money by growing passionfruit and bananas. The family spent all of their money on the children and the farm food.

My Grandad by Jake Frazer

Grandad, Alan John Frazer was born in 1937 in the Mater Hospital at Crows Nest in Sydney. His first vivid memory was going fishing with my father at Primrose Park and getting the fishing line snagged on the rocks. He grew up in a small house in Crows Nest that had 2 bedrooms and 1 bathroom. Grandad had 3 brothers and 2 sisters so he did not have a bedroom of his own. It was a very friendly neighbourhood with plenty of children grandad’s age so he had plenty of kids to play cricket with in Burlington Street in which he lived. Grandad’s parents were both born in Sydney. Unfortunately his dad passed away when grandad was 7 years old so he does not have a lot of memories of him. His mother was a wonderful woman who raised and educated all the 6 children. His mother worked cleaning banks and working in cake stores. The money earned was spent on living expenses.

Report on Jorja’s Pop by Porscha Usher

Jorja’s pop was born in 1943 at a place Carlton, Melbourne. His first name is Robin Henry and he was told by his parents that he was a big baby and weighed 10 pounds. His first memories are about his 4 brothers and having to share all of their toys together. He lived in a brick house with three bedrooms, one bathroom and a sleepout, he slept in one room with his three brothers and it was very crowded. He remembers having one bike that he also had to share with his brothers and that caused a lot of fights.Jorja’s Pop’s parents were also born in Melbourne and had a hard time bringing up the family as there was a depression and not much food or money. Sometimes his father had to go to the bush and work for months at a time. His mother then had to be very strict with the boys to keep them in line.He cannot remember his grandparents very well but he knew that they loved their grandchildren. One of his favourite memories is of a stray dog he found called Toby and had him for 12 years. He has had four dogs since then called Toby.He never got pocket money and with his brothers collected bottles, newspapers and old metal and sold it to the scrap yard. He had to share duties at home that included cleaning the dishes, chopping wood and mowing the lawn.He went to South Preston State School and was an average student but really enjoyed mathematics. He remembers playing the bass drum as the children marched into school. He spent his school holidays at a camp run by the church at Frankston. He paid for this with the money he earned collecting bottles. He played a lot of sports and was lucky to win some good trophies. He started work when he was 15 as a tool maker and progressed through his life to finish as a occupational health and safety consultant.I know he loves all his grandchildren very much and I hope he knows they love him too.

Sugar   and   spice   and   all   things   nice,   that’s  what   little   girls   are  made  of. Without warning though, your little girl is confronted with whispers, rumours, gossip, and nasty behaviours. From the beginning of Grade Three, girls start using exclusionary tactics and other covert ways of bullying with the intent to isolate and hurt their friends. Most girls at times are the target of this type of bullying. They are, at other times, bystanders. Sometimes they are even the aggressor, often as a way to establish and maintain social positions. Girls may be best friends one day and cruel the next. These behaviours are not okay and need to be challenged. Considering identity formation in girls is crucial in their primary school years, the impact of early friendships and coping with social struggles can be long-lasting and may significantly impact on future relationships. Many bullying programs do not address the complicated issues around girl friendships and cliques. Additionally, many parents feel overwhelmed and ill-equipped to handle these issues with their daughter, particularly when they are unable  to  influence  another  child’s  behaviour.

A Quick Overview

The  ‘Sugar  &  Spice’  program  will  expose these girl bullying behaviours, assist your daughter to make healthy relationships, empower your daughter to deal with this behaviour and provide her with strategies to manage friendships and effectively resolve conflict. The program is offered in six one hour sessions over six weeks.
