A LOOK BACK AT THE WIN IN 2019 One of W&M’s most memorable victories in recent years was the 2009 season-opening victory at Virginia (26-14), which helped propel the Tribe to an outstanding season that eventually ended in the NCAA Semifinals. W&M’s defensive effort was outstanding all night long, as it caused seven turnovers and held the Cavaliers scoreless in the second half. Additionally, the Tribe limited Virginia to just 269 yards of total offense and 12 first downs, with just 79 yards and four first downs coming in the second half. W&M also dominated the time of possession, winning the battle by more than 11 minutes (35:36-24:24). Cornerback B.W. Webb intercepted three passes, including a 50-yard pick-six late in the fourth quarter to help punctuate the win. Six Tribe players who participated in the win went on to earn roster spots with NFL teams - Sean Lissemore (DT), Jonathan Grimes (RB), B.W. Webb (CB), Adrian Tracy (DE), R.J. Archer (QB) and David Caldwell (S).

RECENT SUCCESS VS. THE FBS W&M has performed well in many of its recent contests against FBS opponents. In addition to defeating UVA in 2009, W&M has owned second half leads in four of its last 10 games against FBS foes. Below is a quick look at some of those recent matchups.

2015 Virginia L, 35-29 Had chance for go-ahead TD, but final drive stalled at UVA’s 30 with 1:27 left in 4Q

2013 West Virginia L, 24-17 W&M led by 10 midway through 3Q

2012 Maryland L, 7-6 W&M held UM scoreless until 9:52 remaining

2010 North Carolina L, 21-17 W&M led by 10 with less than 10 minutes left

2009 Virginia W, 26-14 W&M held UVA to just 269 total yds

W&M vs. THE ACC Since the league was formed in 1953, W&M has gone 11-42 against opponents from the ACC. Saturday’s game will mark the 14th time in the last 16 seasons that W&M has faced an ACC team. If games against current ACC members Florida State, Louisville, Miami, Pitt, Syracuse and Virginia Tech before they joined the league are taken into account, the Tribe’s all-time record against current ACC teams is 19-83-1. The Tribe’s last two wins versus ACC opposition have come in Charlottesville. Prior to the victory in 2009, W&M also downed UVA in 1986, when the Tribe handed the Cavaliers a 41-37 setback.

DID YOU KNOW? The last time W&M hosted an ACC opponent in Williamsburg was in 1980, when Wake Forest defeated the Tribe, 27-7, at Zable Stadium.

■ W&M/VIRGINIA NOTES

BLOCKING KICKS After ranking 19th nationally with five blocks last season, W&M got off to another strong start in the season-opening win against Lafayette when Bill Murray blocked a field goal. It was Murray's seventh career block.

20 IS THE MAGIC NUMBER W&M is undefeated when scoring more than 20 points during the last three seasons, as it has posted a 6-0 record in those contests.

WINNING THE TURNOVER BATTLE During the last two seasons, W&M is undefeated (4-0) when it commits fewer turnovers than its opponents, while it is 0-5 when it loses the turnover battle during the recent stretch.

IMPORTANCE OF GETTING AHEAD During the last two seasons, W&M is 4-1 when it scores first, while it is just 1-5 in games in which the opposition scored first. Dating back to the start of the 2013 season, W&M is 23-11 in games in which it scores first. Conversely, it is 12-24 when the opponent scores first.

LEADING AT HALFTIME Dating back to the 2014 season, the Tribe has won 15 of its last 18 games when leading at halftime. The only setbacks have come against Towson (2016, 2017, 2018).

HOLDING ON TO LEADS Dating back to the start of the 2013 season, W&M owns a 30-3 record when leading after three quarters. The three losses came against Delaware, 2015; JMU, 2014; Villanova, 2013.

NEW ERA BEGINS A new era of Tribe football is underway as first-year head coach Mike London leads W&M in 2019. A former assistant under longtime Tribe head coach Jimmye Laycock, London returns to Williamsburg with an impressive list of accomplishments as a head coach that includes winning a national title at the University of Richmond (2008) and earning Atlantic Coast Conference Coach of the Year distinction at the University of Virginia (2011). Additionally, he was honored as the 2008 AFCA FCS National Coach of the Year.

■ TEAM NOTES

CONNECTIONS In addition to head coach Mike London, who spent time at Virginia as both the head coach and as an assistant, seven other members of the Tribe's coaching staff either played and/or coached at UVA. Defensive coordinator Vincent Brown served as an assistant with the Cavaliers, while Matt Johns, Josh Zidenberg and Gordon Sammis all played and worked as graduate assistants at Virginia. Rasi-I Dowling, Keenan Carter and Darryl Blackstock all played at UVA.

OPENING AT HOME With W&M's season-opening victory against Lafayette at Zable Stadium, W&M improved to 7-1 in home lid-lifters dating back to 1980.

HOME OPENERS With W&M's season-opening win against Lafayette, W&M improved to 29-11 in home openers since 1980. Additionally, the Tribe has won 10 of its last 12 home openers, winning by an average margin of 22.1 points in the victories (+221).

SUCCESS VS. FCS IN NON-CONFERENCE With the season-opening win against Lafayette, W&M has won 34 of its last 36 games against non-conference FCS opponent during the regular season. The lone losses during that span are Lafayette (2012) and Colgate (2018). Additionally it owns a 37-3 record vs. FCS non-conference teams during the regular season dating back through the 2002 season.

CHALLENGING SLATE Playing its first 12-game regular season slate since 2014, W&M's schedule this fall features a number of challenging matchups. In addition to playing two FBS opponents (Virginia/ECU), W&M will square off against five teams nationally ranked in the preseason polls (James Madison, Maine, Towson, Elon, Colgate). This season marks the first time since 1991 that W&M's schedule will include two FBS opponents.

LIMITING PENALTIES W&M has ranked among the country’s top 10 least penalized teams eight straight years. The chart below indicates those national rankings during the last seven seasons. National Ranking (FCS) Year Fewest Pen./Gm Fewest Pen. Yds/Gm 2018 7th (4.6) 8th (38.6) 2017 3rd (3.8) 3rd (34.9) 2016 9th (4.5) 5th (39.9) 2015 5th(4.3) 4th (37.5) 2014 7th (4.7) 5th (40.2) 2013 5th (4.1) 3rd (32.2) 2012 8th (4.2) 8th (38.5) 2011 2nd (3.6) 2nd (30.0)

ONE TRIBE, ONE FAMILY The W&M athletic department’s unofficial slogan - “One Tribe, One Family” - is especially true for the Tribe football team, as the roster features a pair of brother tandems - Collin/Corey Parker and Andrew/Sam Trainer. Additionally, head coach Mike London's son, Mike London Jr. is the Tribe's wide receivers coach.

SENIOR LEADERSHIP Leading the Tribe's 19-member senior class is a quartet of talented seniors - Nate Atkins (senior, LB), Bill Murray (senior, DT), Corey Parker (senior, DB) and Mark Williamson (senior, OL). Atkins enters his second season as a captain, becoming just the 12th player in the program’s 126-year history to be selected as a team captain twice. In addition to their leadership, all four players have excelled on the field and earned all-conference honors at least once

during their careers.

TRIBE IN THE NFL Four former Tribe standouts were in NFL training camps this summer - DeAndre Houston-Carson (Bears), Tre McBride (Jaguars), Luke Rhodes (Colts) and B.W. Webb (Bengals). Additionally, a pair of former Tribe players are currently serving as NFL head coaches - Mike Tomlin ‘95 (Pittsburgh Steelers, head coach) and Sean McDermott ‘98 (Buffalo Bills). Atlanta Falcons head coach Dan Quinn also has W&M ties, as he was an assistant on the Tribe’s staff in 1994. Also noteworthy is a pair of former W&M head coaches who went on to have extraordinary careers - Marv Levy and Lou Holtz. Levy served as W&M’s head coach from 1964-68 and was followed by Holtz from 1969-71.

TRIBE IN THE NFL When All-American defensive back DeAndre Houston Carson was selected by the Chicago Bears in the sixth round of the 2016 NFL Draft, he became the sixth Tribe player drafted since 2009. Below are a few notes about W&M’s six NFL Draft picks since 2009. • Leads the CAA and ranks second in the FCS, behind only Montana (7) • Ranks third in the state of Virginia (behind only Virginia Tech and Virginia) • Is more than ACC member Duke (5)

STRONG START W&M's offense opened the season with an impressive start in the victory against Lafayette. The Tribe's 30 points marked the most by the program in a season opener since 2015 when it defeated Lafayette, 34-7. Additionally, it marked just the second time in the last 12 seasons that W&M scored at least 30 points in a season opener.

PILING UP THE YARDS W&M's 418 yards of total offense in the season-opening win against Lafayette marked the team's best effort since the Maine game in 2016. Additionally, the Tribe's 255 rushing yards are the most by the program since the win against Norfolk State in 2016.

SETTING THE TONE W&M's first play from scrimmage in the season-opening win against Lafayette set the tone, as quarterback Kilton Anderson completed a 49-yard pass to wideout Zach Burdick.

SHARING THE LOAD While Hollis Mathis provided much of W&M's rushing yardage in the season-opening win against Lafayette (127 yds), nine different Tribe players logged at least one carry en route to helping the squad rush for 255 yards.

SUCCESS ON THIRD DOWN While W&M's .526 third down conversion percentage in the win against Lafayette is impressive, the Tribe was especially effective during the second half when it converted 10 of its 15 third downs (.667).

IT STARTS UP FRONT In addition to helping W&M pile up 255 rushing yards, W&M's offensive line allowed just one sack in last week's win against Lafayette.

GROUND GAME PRODUCTION IS KEY Since joining the league in 1993, W&M has rushed for at least 200 yards 77 times and posted a 72-5 record in those contests. Additionally, W&M is 26-4 when out-rushing the opposition since 2013.

STAT TO WATCH Dating back through the 2011 season, W&M has struggled to win games in which it has thrown at least 30 passes and owns an 10-24 mark in such contests.

FORCING TURNOVERS W&M's defense was effective generating turnovers in last week's win against Lafayette, as it forced four turnovers - all of which came in the second half. The Tribe forced fumbles on Lafayette's first three possessions of the second half, giving W&M's offense tremendous starting field position and eventually leading to 17 points.

THIRD DOWN STOPS W&M limited Lafayette to just 6 of 15 on third downs, while the Leopards were unsuccessful on both of their fourth down conversion attempts.

EFFECTIVE AGAINST THE RUN W&M was effective slowing down Lafayette's ground game last Saturday, as it limited the Leopards to just 114 rushing yards on 37 carries (3.1 yd/carry).

STOPS BEHIND THE LINE W&M created disruption behind the line of scrimmage in its win against Lafayette last Saturday, as its 6.0 sacks marked the most by the Tribe since defeating Bucknell in 2017. Additionally, W&M's 11.0 TFL marked the most by the program since defeating James Madison in 2013.

CONTINUING A TREND Dating back to last season, W&M has allowed just 311.8 total yards per game in the last four contests.

TOUGH TO SCORE THROUGH THE AIR Since the start of the start of the 2016 season, a span of 33 games, just five opponents have scored more than one passing touchdown against W&M.

SHUTTING DOWN THE PASS Since the start of the 2007 season, a span of 136 games, the Tribe has allowed more than 300 passing yards just eight times - New Hampshire (2008, 2011, 2017), Delaware (2009), Hampton (2014), James Madison (2014) and Elon (2015), Duquesne (2015).

TOUGH DEFENSE AT ZABLE STADIUM The Tribe defense has been outstanding in home games since the start of the 2009 season and is allowing just 18.1 points per game at Zable Stadium during the stretch. During the stretch of 54 games (975 points), W&M has posted six shutouts. W&M owns a 36-18 record at home during that span.

HEAD COACH

Tremendously successful and widely respected, Mike London enters his first season as head coach of the William & Mary football program. London, a former assistant under longtime Tribe head coach Jimmye Laycock, returns to Williamsburg with an impressive list of accomplishments as a head coach that includes winning a national title at the University of Richmond (2008) and earning Atlantic Coast Conference Coach of the Year distinction at the University of Virginia (2011). “This is an exciting day for William & Mary, and we are thrilled to welcome Mike and his family back to Williamsburg,” W&M Director of Athletics Samantha K. Huge said at the time of London hiring in November. “Mike embodies the values and character that we need to lead our football program forward and he has demonstrated an ability to develop players and win championships over his nearly 30 years in coaching. His unique journey and commitment to the development of young men make him the perfect successor to carry on Coach Jimmye Laycock’s 39-year legacy while forging a new path for Tribe Football.” Howard University’s head coach the last two seasons, London’s tenure leading the Bison was highlighted with his selection as a finalist for the 2017 STATS Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) Eddie Robinson Award, which is bestowed upon the nation’s top head coach. Additionally, he earned the 2017 American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Regional Coach of the Year award after guiding Howard to a 6-2 conference record – the program’s first winning season since 2012. His inaugural campaign at HU featured a season-opening win at UNLV, which ESPN lauded as one of college football’s greatest upsets. Prior to his two-year stint at HU, London served as an associate head coach/defensive line coach at the University of Maryland in 2016 where he helped lead the Terps to an appearance in the Quick Lane Bowl. In addition to garnering ACC Coach of the Year honors at UVA in 2011, London led the Cavaliers to the Chick-Fil-A Bowl. En route to earning the postseason bowl bid, he guided UVA to road wins at Miami and Florida State – becoming the first program in the nation to accomplish the feat in the same season. London gained his first head coaching experience at Richmond, his alma mater, where he amassed a 24-5 record and guided the Spiders to the 2008 FCS national title during his initial campaign. His efforts were recognized by the AFCA, which selected him as the FCS National Coach of the Year. After leading the Spiders to an 8-0 start the following season, UR became just the third FCS school to receive a vote in the Associated Press (AP) Poll. London landed the head coaching job at UR after an exceptional two-year stint as UVA’s defensive coordinator (2006-07). During his first season, the Cavaliers allowed

just 289.5 yards per game – the program’s best figure in 27 years. The following season, London’s defense ranked sixth nationally in sacks and among the nation’s top 20 in scoring defense and rushing defense. London oversaw the development of an outstanding group of All-ACC honorees, highlighted by 2007 unanimous All-America standout Chris Long, who was the second overall pick in the 2008 NFL Draft. Before returning to UVA, where he was an assistant from 2001-04, London spent the 2005 season in the NFL as the Houston Texans’ defensive line coach. London’s first stint with the Cavaliers also included serving as the program’s recruiting coordinator from 2002-04. London, a native of Hampton, Va., began his coaching career as the outside linebackers coach at Richmond in 1988 before coaching the defensive line at William & Mary under Jimmye Laycock (1991-94). He then returned to UR for two more years (1995-96) as the outside linebackers coach and recruiting coordinator before taking on the defensive line coaching duties at Boston College from 1997-00. A standout defensive back at Richmond (1979-82), London served as a team captain his senior season and was signed by the Dallas Cowboys as a free agent in 1983. London graduated from UR in 1983 with a bachelor’s degree in sociology and a year later earned a degree in law enforcement from the Richmond Police Academy. He served as a detective from 1985-87. London and his wife, Regina, have four children: daughters Ticynn, Jaicyn and Madicyn and son Korben. He has three children from a previous marriage: sons Michael Jr. and Brandon, and daughter Kristen.
