ANZAC DAY 2016 During Term 1, 14 students, lead by their very talented Art teacher, Mrs Jess McPherson, created 10 banners that

signify ANZAC Day. These banners were the brainchild of teacher Ms Mia McDonough and her father, long standing

RSL Sub-branch member, Mr Jack McDonough. The students involved were: Year 9 Zoe Paull, Ellora McKenzie,

Coby Small, Emily Davis, Ellie Moss Year 11: Emily Ferguson, Bailey Heron, Nikki Martizano, Keely Drayton, Tayla

Nielsen, Saskija Olivieri, Lauren Tearle and Year 12 (exchange students), Farni Cederberg, Maria Haataja. These

banners were presented to The Kyogle RSL Sub-branch and now line the main street of Kyogle. They will be used

every year during the ANZAC commemorative period. Over the recent holidays our students were active participants

in both the Dawn Service and the ANZAC Day march. Our captains, Matthew Cornell and Kirra Harrison and Vice

Captains, Daniel Williams and Liesl Pederson (stepping in for Rosie Dodge) did a fantastic job leading the Dawn

service. They all represented

their school with pride.

Well done.

Despite the weather a

significant number of students

participated in the ANZAC

Day March. Once again our

students spoke well and

Maricar Martizano,

Anzac Day The annual Dawn Service held on Anzac Day morning at the Summerland Way Cenotaph once again proved to be a stirring occasion for our school. Our student captains, Kirra Harrison and Matthew Cornell supported by Daniel Williams and Liesl Pederson all played significant roles, with the school Year 12 choir consisting of Liesl, Maricar and Emmaline being a particular highlight. My thanks and admiration are extended to these young people.

Thank you to all the students who marched at the 10.30 march, it was wonderful to see such a strong turnout supported by Ms McDonough, Mr Hanley and Mr Nicholson.

School Development Day Day 1 this term kicked off with a combined School Development Day with KHS combining with KPS, Afterlee PS, Barkers Vale PS, Wiangaree PS, Collins Creek PS, The Risk PS, Urbenville PS and Rukenvale PS. The morning session was devoted to unpacking the Well Being Framework presented by Dr Lyn Gardon from Lismore District Office. The middle session, presented by Lyn Parker started the quality conversations around Positive Behaviour for Learning while the afternoon session was led by Kerry Keogh and looked at the effect of trauma on students. It was a jammed packed day but the professional conversations and sharing of experience was fantastic and really started to cement working together as a Community of Public Schools.

HSC Timetables You know that the HSC examinations are fast approaching when BOSTES publishes the 2016 Examination Timetable. Students are now able to access their personalised timetable via their Students Online account. It is also a timely reminder for each Year 12 student to log into their account and check their personal details especially email addresses and mobile phone numbers.

Front Foyer Refurbishment “Phase one” of the opening up of our school’s front foyer has now been completed, with many visitors to the school already commenting on the positive nature of the change. New countertops will be installed later this term. School Plan Our School Plan, updated for 2016, and The Annual School Report have been posted on the school website. Our plan remains focussed on the same set of Strategic Directions: Excellence in Teaching Excellence in Learning Excellence in Leading

Changes to specific projects to be achieved are based on the process of evaluation conducted during Term 4 of last year and Term 1 this year.

We look forward to again working with our school community of students, parents and teachers in order to evaluate the effectiveness of our work across our three Strategic Directions for the remainder of this year.

Wishing all of our school community a great continued start to Term 2.

Principal’s Report Deputy Principal’s Report

Welcome to this issue of the KHS newsletter. Already students and staff have settled into what will be a very busy and engaging Term 2. Year 11 are sitting their first senior examination period, NAPLAN for Years 7 & 9 occurs next week and Year 12 work placement students have engaged their TAFE studies with practical on the job placement and Year 10 work experience students have tasted a variety of employment opportunities advancing their post school choices. Term 2 is traditionally busy with examination and reporting periods and it is timely to remind students to engage in their education. I was extremely proud of our students and the Kyogle Community at large in their commemoration of Anzac Day. KHS students lead the Dawn Service and over 70 students marched later in the day. Kyogle really does honour their fallen!

The term has begun on a busy note for staff as well with all schools from the Kyogle Community of Schools joining KHS on the school development day last Tuesday. We are all beginning a powerful and significant journey in defining and implementing our Positive Behaviour for Learning structures. PBL is a broad range of systemic and individualised strategies for achieving important social and learning outcomes while preventing problem behaviour. When implemented, PBL will provide a seamless continuum of behavioural and academic support for all students, accurately adopted from and efficiently sustained through the use of research-validated practices and implemented as part of a region wide system of behaviour support.

PBL involves the engagement of all stakeholders within our school: teachers, students and community, in framing social competence and academic achievement, implementing and supporting positive decision making and modelling best practice teacher and student behaviours in areas such as in the classroom and the playground. It is taking ownership and responsibility for our education.

I look forward to our journey and your input and support along the way.

Regards David Hanley

RUGBY LEAGUE

Next Friday the 13th of May, Kyogle High is playing their first games of the Combined High School Rugby League Knockout Competition. Our students are competing in the Buckley Shield for Under 14's and the University Shield in the Opens. The games are scheduled for 11:30am and 12:30pm. The game is shaping up to be a historic one with Kyogle playing for the first time ever a team made up of students from Lismore High, Richmond River and Kadina. With improvements in player preparation and our coaching staff we plan on making sure the game is a memorable one. All players for the game must take the bus together however we encourage parents and friends to attend and support our school side, The Brolgas. Get out for a great day of league and watch our Public School teams shine. Mr O’Meara

National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy 2016

LETTER TO PARENTS In May 2016 the National Assessment program—Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) will be completed by students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. NAPLAN

has the support of all State and Territory Education Ministers and will assess the literacy and numeracy skills of students across Australian schools. The results of the tests will provide important information to schools about what each student can do, and will be used to support teaching and learning programs. Parents will receive a report indicating their child’s level of achievement. Each student’s level of achievement will be reported against the national minimum standard.

Student background information (student name, gender, date of birth, language background and Aboriginality) will be collected as part of the National Assessment program. This information is treated confidentially and held securely to ensure that every student’s right to privacy is maintained.

The NAPLAN tests will be conducted from 10-12 May 2016. In the Numeracy test, students do not require any measuring tools such as rulers or protractors. In Years 7 and 9 there will be two Numeracy tests: one where a calculator is allowed and one where calculators are not to be used. For the calculator test, the student should use the calculator that they currently use at school.

On the 16th of April Kyogle High School competed in the school steer competitions at

the Grafton Show with great success. Achievements on the day included placing 1st and

2nd in the light weight school steer and 2nd in the heavy weight school steer, gaining a total of $500 in prizes. Chloe

Condon was the schools sole leader on the day with a total of 6 classes to present in and the grand parade she

showed great school spirit, enthusiasm and relished in the chance to try something new. Chloe also demonstrated a

strong commitment to competing at Grafton and showing steers by coming into school throughout the holidays to help

prepare the steers. A special thankyou needs to be given to Vanessa

Condon for transporting Chloe and her assistance on the day, Peter

Clark for his expertise and knowledge and Robert Green for

transporting the steers.

On behalf of the P&C I would like to congratulate our school leaders for the wonderful role they played in this years ANZAC day services. Matthew Cornell, Kirra Harrison, Daniel Williams and Liesl Pederson lead the Dawn Service and the post march service in the Memorial Hall with confidence. Kyogle High School should feel very proud of these young people. With the colder weather looming, it is time to stock up on school jumpers and jackets. The uniform shop has school jumpers for sale in all sizes for $30 and jackets for $45. Both items complement our school uniform. Our next meeting is on Thursday 5th May at 5.30. Everyone is welcome. Happy Mother's Day to all our mothers and carers for Sunday. Enjoy the day. Thankyou Louise Petherbridge - P&C President

ARCHIBULL 2016

Kyogle High School has been selected to participate in Archibull for 2016. The 2016 competition theme ‘Feeding, Clothing and Powering a Hungry Nation’ encourages students and teachers to have courageous conversations about the greatest challenges to Australian agriculture – climate change, food and fashion waste, declining natural resources and biosecurity. The program design also invites the students to be part of the solution by sharing their ideas on how to tackle these challenges as individuals, as a community and as the mums and dads of the next generation. I am seeking students who are interested in participating in this amazing opportunity. There are a number of different ways in which students can participate from design, research, ICT, promotions, collaboration, art and construction the opportunities and possibilities of this project are only limited by our creative minds. The fiberglass bull and resources are on their way, If you are interested in participating in this project see Mrs Doman or Ms McPherson.

Art in the Street Over the school holidays many of our students exhibited there final practical assignments to the public in the Old IGA windows. The activity is very important as it encourages students to resolve their artworks and expose their creations to the critique of others. Year 7 students investigated Joan Miro and his practice of ‘automatic drawing’ to develop artworks that started in chance pattern then used their knowledge of the elements of design to create a cohesive composition that was balanced and visually appealing. Year 8 students were exploring the world of Bridget Riley and optical illusion. Some students created cubes that incorporated six different optical illusion images while others chose to use illusion as a means of confusing the image. Year 9 and 10 students had to alter a book in some way to reconceptualise the objects meaning and use. In doing so the learnt new techniques and explored many ways to layer meaning in their artworks. We were also lucky enough to have some seniors bring some artworks in as well, despite busily working towards their Body of Work. The feedback back from the community was all positive many of whom were boggled by the quality of the students work and the diversity of imagery.
