5. Pre-‐debate techniques
Pre-‐debate techniques ¤ Just Talk ¤ Agree/Disagree ¤ Switch ¤ Bluff ¤ Balloon debate ¤ Five good reasons ¤ Devil’s Advocate
Agree/Disagree 1. Make four signs: Agree, Disagree, Strongly Agree, and Strongly
Disagree. 2. Post one sign in each corner of the room. 3. Write a statement on the board that will elicit a reac@on from
students, such as, "Fast food is a good thing." Students move to the corner with the sign that most closely matches and reflect their opinions, without any discussion or verbal response.
4. Allow the students ample @me, approximately five minutes, to discuss their reac@ons and opinions. A spokesperson from each group reports its opinions.
5. Each group should be allowed equal @me (1-‐3 minutes). Open the floor to debate and discussion. Allow students who have changed their opinions to change corners. Students are invited to explain any changes in opinion as a result of the debate.
Homework 1 – Due Week 13:
Prepare a persuasive speech to be presented in class. A visual aid (poster of some type) is allowed, but NO electronic media (PPT) and NO white board diagrams are allowed (takes too much @me). This is a 3-‐4 minute speech to be given in front of the en@re class. Please come to class on @me. No make-‐ups! [20 points] Basically, you are preparing an opening speech for a debate, following the 1AC format. This format has three parts (similar to our Introduc@on speech) but signposts must include reasons and support (examples, sta@s@cs and tes@mony). See packet 2.2 for more details, especially page 22, and 39-‐45. 1. Introduce the topic (of the speech) and the thesis/claim/argument) 2. State the facts of the case 3. Prove the thesis with your arguments (support) 4. Disprove your opponent’s arguments (before the conclusion) 5. Conclude: end the essay (speech)
