Coyote Club Sports and Games Camp (6-14)

This camp will be fun and innovative for children of ages 6-14. It will focus on learning to play a variety of sports and games, including but not limited to tennis, basketball, soccer, volleyball, and dodge ball. Skills developed from a variety of sports enhance the “ability” of young athletes. Students will have the opportunity to participate in these sports and learn something new. Our sports skills camp develops teamwork and sportsmanship through fun activities. We recognize that even the slightest bit of progress means confidence and empowerment. All of our participants regardless of skill level have the chance to grow as an athlete and as a person, while experiencing the positive impact that sports can forever have on their lives. Emphasis will be on gaining personal confidence and teamwork skills. Campers should bring their own tennis racket, water bottle and gym towel. All other equipment will be provided. Class Number 7154

Butterflies & Bugs – Cake Decorating (8-11)

Kids, with your Wilton Method Instructor as your guide, you will see how easy and fun it is to decorate wonderful cakes and other desserts that will delight your family and friends. Course I is a perfect place to start! Your instructor will show you the right way to decorate, step by step. As you learn each new decorating skill, you will gain a sense of pride in your accomplishments. You will also be able to share your delicious results with family and friends! Students will purchase their own Wilton12 piece cupcake decorating set which can be found at the local arts and crafts store. This kit needs to be brought to the first day of class. Robotics (8-11)

This interactive camp for 8-11 year olds is a great introduction to the world of engineering and robotics! In student pairs, the exploration of simple machines helps them to examine, demonstrate, and understand the concept of pulleys, gears, and axles. This cause and effect camp allows students to reflect on their findings and tap into problem solving and creativity skills in a fun and exciting way. Class Number 7263

Graphic Novel (12-14)

Comic and graphic novels are an exciting medium of expression, merging art and writing together. This class is designed to guide students through the early stages of developing the look of a graphic novel, character designs, and the overall visual style. Participants will choose a story or have their own idea of a story, which they wish to illustrate. Class Number 7224

This is Rocket Science (12-14)

Blast through a discovery of basic rocketry principles with this out of this world hands-on class. Experience the technology design process by constructing and launching your very own rocket. Class Number 7264

Baby Sitting, American Red Cross (12-15)

This American Red Cross class will cover all aspects of child safety, home safety, role playing in potential problem situations and first aid techniques, including Heimlich maneuver. Students will receive official Red Cross certification upon course completion. Students 12 and up are eligible. A $25.00 fee is to be paid at first class for certification and book. Class Number 6974

Music and Movement (6-14)

Do you need a little more action during the summer than watching the TV? Through this fun mix of exercise and dance you will increase coordination and agility, build endurance and strength. This camp will also consist of learning a high-energy dance that will involve hip-hop, funky movements choreographed to the popular music of today. You will improve coordination, listening skills, and learn to work together. The conclusion of the camp will include a performance. Class Number 7247

Super Cosmic Explorations (6-9)

Come aboard and join our crew as we explore our solar system and experience all the field of Astronomy has to offer! In this camp, students will learn about the constellations, star brightness, the formation and motion of our galaxy and much more. Campers will form astronaut teams to do a Mars Rover Relay, participate in a Planetary Mars Soil Lab, demonstrate how a black hole works using marbles and weights, create an asteroid image, map the constellations by designing a star finder, and discover which stars will turn supernova! This will be a journey into space Discovery College campers won’t soon forget! Class Number 7265

Lights, Camera, Action (8-11)

Students will learn basic acting skills through warm-up and improvisation games, along with performances of lip syncs and commercials. Students will also be exposed to theater etiquette, stage makeup, and basic stage direction. Various aspects of the theatre world, including acting, movement and character development will be tailored for their age groups. The program is designed to help young people learn and develop self-confidence, discipline and presentation skills. Class Number 7225

Experiment like a scientist! Our mini-scientists will mix ordinary kitchen ingredients to create "kid-safe" solutions that ooze, bubble, foam and fizz. Does anyone care for homemade ice cream? Many other exciting scientific topics will be explored through hands-on activities. Class Number 7267

Planet Earth (8-11)

In one corner of the Solar System, life abounds. From the frozen lakes in Antarctica to the boiling ocean-floor springs of the Pacific, planet Earth is teeming with life. Junior scientists in this camp will have an opportunity to explore the essential elements of life and develop an understanding of basic life science principles through hands-on methods such as building structural and functional animal models, exploring outdoor habitats, and putting together food webs. Explorations in Drawing (12-14)

Enjoy learning the fundamentals of freehand drawing using a variety of media. Study line, value, form, color and draw a still-life in this hands-on introduction to art, you will experience working with ebony pencils, pastels, charcoal and more. No previous training in art required. Class Number 7227

Robotics (12-14)

Hands on fun and excitement abound as young inventors build their own robots using an infrared controlled robo-vehicle construction set. First we build them and then make them go! Young programmers will send robots on awesome adventures and to play cool games. Lego bricks will become our tool for building vehicle structures, and environments and props for robots. Relating with Money (15-17)

Today, youth ages 12-14 are starting to earn money with summer jobs. So, how should they handle and manage that money? More importantly, how can they make that money work for them? Students will learn about the basics of personal finance including, but not limited to: how to create their own financial plan, how to create their own budget and balance a checkbook, how the banking and investment systems work, and understanding the potential pitfalls of debt and how to effectively manage it. Students will also examine how the choices they make in life can, and will, affect their financial plan. This course will get children on the right path to financial literacy as they near high school. Class Number 7255

Volleyball Camp - Beginning (8-11)

Discovery College takes the energy and excitement of this great team sport and puts it all together into one fun-filled Volleyball camp. All aspects of the game are taught through drills and exercises that focus on passing, setting, hitting and serving. This co-ed program is designed for the beginner player and will incorporate essential life-lessons such as teamwork and sportsmanship. Our volleyball staff will assist each athlete in developing the fundamental skills of the game through game-based drills and daily scrimmages aimed at developing the whole player. Class Number 7261

Kitchen Chemistry (12-14)

This is "Kitchen Chemistry," a course in which students learn principles of food chemistry through experiments. Discover the properties of gases, liquids, colloids, and solids using items found in your own home. Join other chemists for fun and experimentation to learn about our atomic friends and the nature of chemicals. Class Number 7272

Geo Tech (12-14)

This course is designed to provide students with creative hands-on lessons while enhancing innovative education in the classroom through the use of technology. Students will have an opportunity to explore our GeoMazing world using programs like Goggle Earth, Photo-Story, GeoMazing Links, National Geographic, GPS Systems, and NASA. The objective of this course is to promote lifelong learning to the 21st century student while teaching an awareness and appreciation for our global world. The Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) for geography are also included in this course to help prepare students for newly up and coming STAR testing and End of Course Exams. SAT Prep Reading and Writing & Study Skills Two Week Program (15-17)

This 2-week comprehensive preparation course prepares students to take the PSAT/SAT test and focus on the most important information they need to know to get their best score. Students learn critical thinking skills and test strategies for the verbal portion of the test. Verbal instruction will include methods to increase reading comprehension, understanding author's point of view, sentence completion, vocabulary emphasis, and student-written essay. $189. Use these flowers in a grand finale-an impressive flower basket cake using the interwoven basket weave technique. Power and Speed Camp (12-14)

Burn your tires raw and race your friends for the championship! Understand the fundamentals of aerodynamics, which is what dragsters, rockets, and airplanes are all about. You’ll create your own sketch drawing of a powerful dragster. Then you’ll build a model dragster, paint it and prep it for the championship race day. Then, you’ll race for the championship! Next, construct a model rocket from kitchen supplies and launch it up, up, and away into the blue sky! Don’t forget the airplanes! Test your aerodynamic skills by creating and flying all sorts of airplanes that soar above the clouds. This camp is true power! Combination course offering: Dragsters, Rockets, and Airplanes. ACT Prep & Study Skills One Week Program (15-17)

Your ACT score is a pivotal part of you preparing to go to college. Therefore, this one week intensive ACT overview is ideal for students who want to review essential strategies and clues to answering questions from the English, Math, Reading and Science portions of the test. Skills developed from a variety of sports enhance the “ability” of young athletes. Students will have the opportunity to participate in these sports and learn something new. Our sports skills camp develops teamwork and sportsmanship through fun activities. We recognize that even the slightest bit of progress means confidence and empowerment. All of our participants regardless of skill level have the chance to grow as an athlete and as a person, while experiencing the positive impact that sports can forever have on their lives. Bubbly Oozy Science (6-9)

Power and Speed Camp (8-11)

Burn your tires raw and race your friends for the championship! Understand the fundamentals of aerodynamics, which is what dragsters, rockets, and airplanes are all about. You’ll create your own sketch drawing of a powerful dragster. Then you’ll build a model dragster, paint it and prep it for the championship race day. Then, you’ll race for the championship! Next, construct a model rocket from kitchen supplies and launch it up, up, and away into the blue sky! Don’t forget the airplanes! Test your aerodynamic skills by creating and flying all sorts of airplanes that soar above the clouds. This camp is true power! Combination course offering: Dragsters, Rockets, and Airplanes. So You Want to Be an Engineer (12-14)

Explore the various careers in the engineering field. Create your own city. Learn how to draw, design, and construct miniature highways, bridges, buildings, and more. This is your opportunity to build a city, create a space station on Mars, or build a tower to the moon. Class Number 7288

Hands on fun and excitement abound as young inventors build their own robots using an infrared controlled robo-vehicle construction set. First we build them and then make them go! Relating with Money (15-17)

Today, youth ages 12-14 are starting to earn money with summer jobs. So, how should they handle and manage that money? More importantly, how can they make that money work for them? Students will learn about the basics of personal finance including, but not limited to: how to create their own financial plan, how to create their own budget and balance a checkbook, how the banking and investment systems work, and understanding the potential pitfalls of debt and how to effectively manage it. Students will also examine how the choices they make in life can, and will, affect their financial plan. Nano Engineering (12-14)

Students will be given a brief overview of the processes used today to create the world's smallest parts - found in all computers, cell phones, iPods, iPhones, iPads, and pretty much everything "digital" that occupies our daily lives. Hands-on demonstrations designed to provide a macro-sized reference to the processes performed at the nano scale, allowing the students to gain a clear idea of the concepts behind nano-engineering and nanofabrication. Baby Sitting, American Red Cross (12-15)

This American Red Cross class will cover all aspects of child safety, home safety, role playing in potential problem situations and first aid techniques, including Heimlich maneuver. Come aboard and join our crew as we explore our solar system and experience all the field of Astronomy has to offer! In this camp, students will learn about the constellations, star brightness, the formation and motion of our galaxy and much more. Campers will form astronaut teams to do a Mars Rover Relay, participate in a Planetary Mars Soil Lab, demonstrate how a black hole works using marbles and weights, create an asteroid image, map the constellations by designing a star finder, and discover which stars will turn supernova! This is "Kitchen Chemistry," a course in which students learn principles of food chemistry through experiments. Discover the properties of gases, liquids, colloids, and solids using items found in your own home. Clay Animation (12-14)

Create clay animations for family and friends! Use clay to bring your characters to life. Includes stop motion techniques and video editing skills that are essential in the video production world of today. Also storyboarding is used to develop the work for a video segment. Class Number 7306

This course will help you prepare for the THEA Test. College 101 (16-17)

It is no secret that transitioning from high school to college life is a major adjustment. In the Discovery College class, College 101, high school students will identify and strengthen academic and organizational areas that will need to be more highly developed to be successful in college. These areas include writing, critical thinking, mathematics, time management, and study skills. In addition, students will engage in teambuilding and leadership exercises that will encourage them to meet, and work well with unfamiliar people. This class will additionally feature a panel discussion lead by current college students who will be able to offer practical and relevant advice. Class Number 7324

Thank you for registering your child in the Lone Star Discovery College summer program. We anticipate an exciting summer with everyone exploring new classes and gaining knowledge to advance them in their endeavor.

FORMS: (Available Online)

REGISTRATION FORM – Each child must complete a registration form for the weeks during summer 2012.

EMERGENCY FORM with PICK UP AUTHORIZATION FORM: (This is critical for our staff to be aware of any medications the child will be taking as well as allergies). We will not release your child to anyone unless they have signed the pick-up authorization form.

PARENTAL CONSENT FORM - Each parent/guardian must complete a consent form for the weeks during summer 2012.

CLASS CANCELLATIONS & REFUNDS

Classes may be cancelled due to a variety of situations (low enrollment, instructor emergency). We will do everything we can to let you know by Thursday of the preceding week. A 100% refund is provided if the class is cancelled. If you need to withdraw from the class, a “drop/add” form must be completed and submitted to the Continuing Education office the Wednesday before a Monday class start. Decisions are made on that day regarding class status.

DISCIPLINARY POLICY

The purpose of Discovery College is to provide enrichment opportunities; basic standard of good behavior are required.

The use of cell phones in the classroom is prohibited and will be retained until class is over. Students may be removed from class for disruptive behavior. A disciplinary note will be sent home with

your child explaining the behavior. After 3 notes (three class times) your child will be removed from the program for the rest of the session. No refunds will be given in the event that this situation occurs.

Please note, we have a zero tolerance for threats of physical violence, harassment, or abuse of any kind. Student will be immediately removed and not permitted to return for the summer. NO REFUND WILL BE GIVEN.

DISPENSING MEDICINE

We cannot dispense medicines of any kind. If a student needs medicine during the day a parent and/or guardian will need to administer it. The students are not allowed to carry medicine with them to class. This would also include protective sunscreen lotion. They would need to leave all medications with the Discovery College Administrator.

DROP OFF AND PICK UP LOCATION:

LSC-Kingwood drop off and pick up is designated in front of the Administration Building. Please do not drop your child off if you do not see a Discovery College staff member outside. Drop off and pick up in front of parking lot B (west on Kingwood Drive right on Woodpoint Drive, left in front of the

college). Children will be escorted and supervised from the above locations only by Discovery College staff. Please display the placard (child’s name) in the front right windshield. Carpoolers should include additional names. Parents do not need to get out of their vehicle unless they are running late. Please use extreme caution and drive slowly. Staff will greet students beginning at 8:10 AM for the morning classes and 12:40 PM for the afternoon classes. In the event of lighting and thunder, you will need to park and come inside to pick up your child.

EMERGENCY PROCEDURES

Emergency evacuation plans are provided to all Discovery College instructors and aides. In case of fire, the building is equipped with fire alarms and sprinkler systems. In case of tornado, teachers will move students to the designated safety locations in the building. Discovery College personnel will stay with your child at all times. If your child is injured, we notify the parent and/or guardian listed on the emergency forms, then the campus police if

necessary for medical aid.

LUNCH

Students attending morning and afternoon sessions must sign up for “lunch” and should bring something to eat in a bag marked with the student’s name. Meals are not provided.

PICK UP AUTHORIZATION POLICY

Under no circumstances will your child be released to a person whose name and driver’s license number is not listed on your child’s authorization form. In case of emergency, please contact our main CE office (281-312-1760) to locate the Discovery College staff.

Participants must be picked up after classes by 12:30 PM or 5:30 PM. A fee may be charged for late pickups.

SNACK TIME

Morning and afternoon sessions will have a break for a snack time. Please send a snack in a bag, marked with your child’s name. Suggestions for snack time items are: granola bars, cereal, popcorn, raisins, etc. Sweets, candy and messy foods should be avoided. If your child will be participating in outside activities they should bring a water bottle.
