Community Anzac Day Service

On behalf of all in our community I would like to

congratulate and thank our Head Girl and Head Boy, Nina

Beers and Owen Murphy, for representing our school and

community in their address to the large crowd in

attendance. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to attend this year,

but have heard from many people that they presented their

very moving address very competently and respectfully.

My thanks to Mr Torrese and Nina and Owen’s parents for

helping them prepare the presentation. Well done to the

other ten students who represented our school in the

parade.

Nina and Owen also laid a beautiful

wreath on our behalf during the

ceremony.

Open Morning and Coles Promotion Boards

Our open morning will be conducted on Tuesday 22nd May from 9.30am to 11am with our year six

students showing our visitors around our wonderful school. We will be advertising in the local papers,

but I would like community members to extend personal invitation to any friends or contacts you may

have who might be interested in the quality education we offer at OLC.

Advance Notice – Change of Faction Sports Dates

Due to our Faction Sports Carnival clashing with the Thursday evening production of Jungle Book, we

have moved the carnival to Week 7, Term Three. The dates for the carnival will now be:

Jumps: Y1 28th Aug, Y2 – Y6 29th Aug; Throws: Y1 4th Sept, Y2 – Y6; Sports Carnival: 6th Sept.

These dates can be viewed on the on-line calendar. I am giving advance notice in the hope that

parents will not plan holidays on these dates.

Procedure for Unexplained Absences

If your child is absent and you haven’t given prior notice to Fran or the classroom teachers, please

call the absentee line on 9755 3866 before 9.30am so we can account for your children. If we haven’t

heard from parents by 9.30am, we have to follow up with an sms and then with a phone call if there

is no response to the sms. This is a requirement from our recent compliance audit. This process is time

consuming so please contact us as soon as you know your child or children will be away.

If you child arrives after the school bell they must be signed in at the office, or you may receive a text

as they will have been marked absent on the teacher’s roll.

OLC CATHOLIC COMMUNITY CORNER FIRST EUCHARIST

Last night the Year 4 students attended a workshop with their parents in preparation for the

Sacrament of Eucharist, which they will receive for the first time on the 17th of June. The children

and their parents were engaged in a number of activities where they looked at the gifts that

they each possessed and they talked about how they can share those gifts with Jesus and

others. They also discussed the signs and symbols of Eucharist and their meaning. It was a special

evening with lots of interesting discussion. Many thanks to Mrs.

Ricciardione and Mr. Torrese for their help with the workshop. Please

keep the Year 4 students in your prayers as they continue on their

journey of faith. Mrs Amie Meyer OLC RE Coordinator.

YEAR FOUR FAMILY MASS AND EUCHARIST ENROLMENT

This Saturday evening our Year 4 students will have their Family

Mass, during which they will undertake a commitment ceremony in

preparation for the reception of the Sacrament of First Eucharist.

Mass begins at 6.00pm and will be followed by a shared supper of

pizza. All OLC families are welcome to attend to show their support of the Year 4 children, and

are also very welcome to stay afterwards for pizza. If you are intending to come along, please

RSVP to [email protected] as soon as possible for catering purposes. We’d love to see

you there!

CASUALS FOR CATHOLICS

You may be aware of Catholic Care in the Diocese of Bunbury which provides help for families

and people in need across the southern part of our state. The motto for this organisation is

“People Helping People”. Every year Bishop Holohan asks schools in the Bunbury Diocese to hold

a ‘Casuals for Catholic Care Day’ for a gold coin donation. This was originally scheduled to be

held next Friday.11th May. However, we are having the Mother’s Day Breakfast on Friday 11th

and I would like the children in normal Friday sports uniform for this excellent community event.

Casuals for Catholics Care Day will now be held Friday the 18th of April and students are invited

to wear casual clothes on this day. Many thanks for your support and donations.

Mrs. Amie Meyer,

OLC Religious Education Coordinator

TEACHERS LEARN TOO!

As part of a school commitment to improve our understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait

Islander cultures and histories, the OLC staff spent some time with local Wadandi man Josh

Whiteland on Monday. As part of the experience Josh explained the deep connection the

Wadandi people have to the Cape to Cape region. After a walk around Cape Naturaliste

Lighthouse, we gathered at the “Meeting Place” for an interactive experience with an artefact

interpretation and a didgeridoo music session. We are a pretty musical bunch!

The afternoon was informative and interesting and the OLC staff hopes to use what they learned to

help develop the knowledge and understanding of the students at our school.

It’s that time of the year again!

You are invited to join us for the 2018 Book Fair which will be held in the OLC library

on Wednesday 16th May and Thursday 17th May. Books and novelties will be

available for purchase from 8.00 am – 9.00am and 3.30pm – 4.30pm on both of

these days.

Students are permitted to bring money to their library lessons on these days to make

purchases if you believe them to be responsible enough. If you plan in sending your

child to school with more than $20, please ensure they have a permission note to

say they can spend the money.

We receive a large commission from the sale of these books each year to spend on

new books for the OLC library. Your support is appreciated!

Kind regards,

Amie & Mary-Lee
