Yesterday you read an extract from the book ‘The Lost Thing’ by Shaun Tan. This book is about a boy who discovers a bizarre-looking creature while out collecting bottle-tops at a beach. Having guessed that it is lost, he tries to find out who owns it or where it belongs.

This text is written in the point of view from the main character (the boy). This week, you are going to write in the perspective of a different character and write in the point of view of the ‘lost thing’.

    This is 'The Lost Thing'.

It almost looks like an alien or a robot!

What do you notice about this character?

    4. What did you think of his parents when you met them for the first time?

    2021

On Thursday and Friday you will write a diary entry in role of a fictional character (in role of the ‘lost thing’ from the book

that we have read this week).

Today you are going to plan some ideas for your diary entry. A diary entry is written in chronological order, so you will

describe the moment the lost thing was found and taken in by the boy.

Remember that today you are only planning your ideas, NOT writing a diary entry!

When planning, you need to consider the structure:

Below are the paragraphs that you need to plan for. Please answer the questions but you can also include some of your own ideas too. Write in bullet points!

    Introduction:

    • Where are you currently writing your diary entry?

    • What will you be writing about?

    • Why are you writing?

    • Why was this day / event special?

    Paragraph 1:

    • What happened at the beginning?

    • Where were you?

    • What did it look like?

    • Were you all alone?

    • Who discovered you?

    • How did that make you feel?

    Paragraph 2:

    • What happened next?

    • Who did you meet?

    • Did you like them? Why/why not?

    • Did the people seem different or strange to you?

    Paragraph 3:

    • What do you think will happen next?

    • Do you hope to stay with the boy?

    • Do you think you will see the boy again?

    • What do you wish for?

    Your Task!

Extension: Think of some idioms that you can use in your diary entry. Below are some examples that you can magpie.

    Example of the task today:

    Dear diary,

What a crazy day! I'm currently outside, alone once again. I'm feeling overwhelmed by the kindness of a young 'thing' who looked extremely different to me, and although I have never seen such a creature, the kind person helped me today when I made yet another mistake. This is how the day started ...

At the crack of dawn I woke up. Excited, I began my travels across to different plants. Today was my chance to prove to my miserable parents that I, Robert Robot, was old enough to travel alone! Unfortunately for me, I lost control of the steering wheel and BANG. I eventually woke up on a planet named Earth, the ugliest planets of them all! Anxious, I crawled across the bumpy textured floor. All around were creepy things with just 2 legs, I believe they are called humans. To my surprise, these humans were much little than I am (almost half the size!) yet none of these creatures seemed to notice me at all. I felt lost, alone and embarrassed. All I could think was "Who would help me?" and "How will I ever get home?"
