Infielder Carlos Guillen, a three-time All-Star and veter- an of 14 major league seasons, an- nounced his retirement Tuesday morn- ing. The 36-year-old Guillen hit .285 dur- ing his career with Seattle (1998-2003) and the Detroit Tigers (2004-11). Pirates sign OF McCutchen to 6-year, $51.5M deal BRADENTON, Fla. — The Pittsburgh Pirates and All-Star centerfielder An- drew McCutchen agreed on Tuesday to a six-year, $51.5 million deal. McCutchen, 25, is now under con- tract with the Pirates through the 2017 season, and there’s a club option for 2018. Though he hit just .259 in 2011, McCutchen posted career highs in home runs (23) and RBIs (89) while add- ing 23 stolen bases. He would have been eligible to become a free agent follow- ing the 2015 season. FOOTBALL WR Moss works out for Saints METAIRIE, La. — The New Orleans Saints held a workout on Tuesday with veteran receiver Randy Moss, who is trying to make a comeback after spend- ing a year out of pro football. General Manager Mickey Loomis confirmed the workout took place, but the club did not provide any details on how the 35-year-old Moss performed. New Orleans may be in the market for a receiver this offseason because two of quarterback Drew Brees’ regu- lar targets, Marques Colston and Rob- ert Meachem, are entering free agency, and it remains to be seen whether the Saints can offer the type of contracts that both of them want. Colston’s agent is Joel Segal, who also represents Moss. The 6-foot-4 Moss last played in the NFL in 2010, a turbulent season for him in which he bounced from New England to Minne- sota and then to Tennessee. Other news » The San Francisco 49ers signed free agent safety and special teams standout C.J. Spillman to a three-year contract extension Tuesday that takes him through the 2014 season, another move to keep the secondary intact for the reigning NFC West champions. » Texans running back Arian Foster has signed a five-year, $43.5 million deal to stay in Houston. An undrafted free agent in 2009, Fos- ter made $525,000 last season. He was the NFL’s leading rusher in 2010 with 1,616 yards. He then ran for 1,224 yards and 10 touchdowns last season. He was due to become a restricted free agent next week, but his agent, Mike McCart- ney, said Monday that Foster was eager to work out a deal with the Texans. » The Kansas City Chiefs released veteran linebacker Demorrio Williams on Tuesday, saving the franchise about $2 million in salary cap space before the start of free agency. The 31-year-old Williams joined the Chiefs in 2008 after four seasons with the Atlanta Falcons, and eventually be- came the starter ahead of Derrick John- son. But he’s been used primarily on special teams the past few seasons as Johnson emerged as a Pro Bowl middle linebacker. Key players out for Alabama TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Alabama heads into spring practice without its most ex- perienced tailback Eddie Lacy and re- ceiver Duron Carter. Coach Nick Saban said Tuesday that Lacy will miss the spring for the de- fending national champion Crimson Tide while recovering from surgery for a turf toe injury that plagued him since the Arkansas game last season. Carter, meanwhile, remains suspended after being held out of practice leading up to the BCS title game against LSU, and Sa- ban said he doesn’t have a timetable for his return. AUTO RACING Filippi joins Rahal Letterman SEBRING, Fla. — Italian driver Luca Filippi will race for Bobby Rahal’s team beginning with the Indianapolis 500. Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing will run a full season with Japanese driver Takuma Sato, and field a second car for Filippi in 12 races. He’ll drive the No. 30 Honda.
