Where did January go? This warp speed passage of time is beginning to be routine! February ushers in our basketball tournaments, which we are hosting this year! We also have several parent focused events which will enable our new and veteran parents to get to know each other. At least the Presidents’ Day long weekend will allow some break in the non-stop schedule. Of course, I do not mean to sound like I am whining as every activity signals the successes of our students! Joe and I hated to miss Senior Night this year. The new date conflicted with a prior commitment and we were unable to make the celebration. Senior Night is one of our traditions that begins the transitioning for our entire community. Not only are our seniors beginning to realize that this time next year they will be living an entirely different life, but their parents, also, begin to prepare for the family changes that will occur. However, this is not just about the seniors. Our students and staff also begin to realize that everyone moves up. Our eighth graders will be in high school. This year’s juniors will be in the coveted leadership role. The time honored tradition of stepping up the next rung on the ladder becomes a reality that is anticipated and planned. It is all very exciting! In the bustle of every day responsibilities, it is easy to miss the subtle changes in our teens that have already occurred during this school year. Occasionally a few students make remarkable and rapid positive changes in their interactions and self-perception. However, the process is usually subtle and occurs over time. This morning while I was using the quiet early hours to take care of paperwork, I was aware of a steady conversation taking place in the background. The voice was familiar and the tone was light and informative. I shifted focus from my computer and began to attend to the speaker in the next room. I was hearing the voice of a student who had been silent when he enrolled three years ago. His first year, he moved through his days with his eyes on the ground in silent determination. His demeanor was very serious and his interactions with others were minimal. His second year he participated a bit more in class and began to talk with the students with whom he ate lunch. Today he moves around campus with a positive purpose. He assists with selling snacks, visits with staff and students and moves through his day with confidence and pride. Next year, as a senior, he will personify what a Cottage School Student can be. And this time next year he will be preparing for a future that is rewarding and successful! You might be interested in knowing that we continue to examine and enhance our crisis management plan. We have an ongoing committee that meets to review and update our existing plan. This week we installed outside speakers so we can communicate with people moving between classes or in outdoor activities should we need to give instructions. These speakers will not be used unless there is an emergency. Also, next month we will be sending out surveys for your completion. We read every response and use the information you give us to plan. Specific and constructive feedback has guided us through the years and we appreciate your taking the time to let us know how we are doing and what you would like to see in the future. Thanks, in advance, for participating!

A Difficult Decision Dear Faculty, Staff and Cottage School Family Members, Toward the end of school, last year, I announced that we were, at long last, going to begin construction of a Multipurpose Athletic Field. We were all very excited about the prospect knowing that the project would bring a much needed capital improvement to our campus. Unfortunately, funding prospects on which we based our plans to move forward did not materialize. After a very careful review of the costs associated with the construction plans, even cutting back on the full scope of the project to provide a Soccer Only venue, we still found that the cost of the project far exceeded our fundraising capacity at this time. We have, therefore, made the decision to temporarily postpone the project as we would not ever jeopardize the financial security of the school mission to embark on a capital improvement project regardless of its importance to the growth of our program. We will revisit this project in the not too distant future when fundraising opportunities once again open up for us to do so. We realize that the Cottage School families were fully behind this project. However, after 30 years of experience, we know what our internal fundraising capacity is, and we simply did not feel we could expand that capacity by the amount required to move forward with this project. We know you share our disappointment with the need to make this decision but also know that you trust it was made in the best interest of the school and our primary mission. Sincerely, Joe Digieso Treasurer

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Beacon College to Offer a Dual Credit College Composition Course at The Cottage School in Summer 2015

LEESBURG, FL — Beacon College, the nation’s first accredited college to offer both bachelor’s and associate degrees exclusively for

students with learning disabilities, ADHD and other specific learning differences, will offer “College Composition,” at The Cottage

School, this summer, for Atlanta area students who learn differently.

The three week, non-residential course, begins on June 22nd. The three credit course qualifies for both high school and college credit.

College Composition is typically a first semester college course designed to develop an entering college student’s skills in writing multi-

paragraph essays with emphasis on exposition, including the selection, restriction, organization, and development of topics. Students

also examine selected writing samples as models of form and sources of ideas for

their own writing. Successful completion of the College Composition course prior to

a student entering college can make a critical difference in transitioning a student to

the rigor of college-level writing. The transition to college writing can be especially

difficult for students with learning differences.

The program includes a 3-hour course work session in the morning taught by Beacon

College faculty using multimodal teaching practices. The multimodal teaching

approach is proven to be particularly effective when teaching students with a wide

range of learning differences. In the afternoon, students needing additional

academic support will have the opportunity to work with a skilled Beacon College

writing specialist and/or work on preparing their college essay. It is the expectation that each student will complete the three week pro-

gram with a college essay prepared and ready to include with most college and university admissions applications.

Applicants must be rising seniors or have graduated in spring 2015 and be heading to a college or university in fall 2015.

The cost of the course is $1,750.

For additional information and an application please contact:

Dale Herold, Dean of Admissions and Enrollment Management Beacon College 105 East Main Street Leesburg, FL 34748 [email protected] 352-787-0796 www.beaconcollege.edu

Would you like a House Guest…

This summer we have an exciting opportunity to partner with Beacon College for a dual credit college course. During the

three week session, the instructors from Beacon will need a place to stay. They could rent rooms at the Doubletree Hotel

around the corner, but I wonder if any of you have an alternative (warm and friendly) option for them. They will have their

own transportation and be gone during the day (Monday-Friday) while they teach. If you have some good suggestions that

could save them money and create a friendly experience, please e-mail me at school, [email protected]. Thanks!
