ments prepared by the Committee on Memorial Minutes :

Dr . D . L . MacLaurin

Donald Leslie MacLaurin died on July 19th ,1958, at the age of 77 . He was a graduate inArts of McMaster and held a Ph .D . degree fromWashington University . He served the Provinc eof British Columbia during the whole of hi sactive life, - from 1905 to his retirement in1946 - as teacher, as Inspector of Schools, a sPrincipal of the Victoria Normal School and a sAssistant Superintendent with the Department o fEducation .

He was a member of the Senate of th eUniversity during the 17 years in which he wa sPrincipal of the Normal School in Victoria ,i .e . from 1915 to 1932 . As the first principa lof this teacher-training school he establishe da lasting reputation as a master-teacher an dhis fine influence on the school's life wa sevident throughout all the years of its history .In 1935 he was appointed Chairman of the Centra lRevision Committee of the Department of Educatio nwhich made a major revision of the entir ecurriculum of the elementary and secondary schools .He was a Founder Member of Convocation .

The thesis which Dr . MacLaurin prepare dfor the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy is a nimportant contribution to the history o feducation in the Province . The thesis i sentitled "The History of Education in th eCrown Colonies of Vancouver Island and Britis hColumbia and in the Province of British Columbia . "

The sympathy of members of Senate is extende dto his widow and the members of his family .

Registrar Emeritus Stanley Wade Mathew s

Registrar Emeritus Stanley Wade Mathews die dSeptember 4th, 1958, at the age of 87 .

A graduate of Queen's University, where he wasgold-medallist in Mathematics, he was one of th epioneer group of teachers of Vancouver High Schoo lin which he began his teaching career in 1902 . Asteacher here of Commercial subjects, he laid th efoundation of Vancouver's Commercial High Schools .

In 1909 he became Principal of King Edwar dHigh School . Ten years later, in 1919, he wa sappointed Registrar of the University, a positionwhich he held for 22 years, until his retiremen tin 1941 .

Mr . Mathews had a genius for the organizatio nof details, a talent for which he found full scopein his work as Registrar . Among his hobbies wa sstamp-collecting in which his interest led to theformation of the University's collection of stamps .

His intimate knowledge of the Provincia lschool system and his command of calendar materia land of University procedures were of inestimabl evalue to the administration .

that the Board of Governors had approved the following item s

as recommended by Senate at its previous meeting :

Extra-sessional credit courses for 1958-5 9New course sAgreement with St . Paul's Hospital for the trainin g

of student nurse sReport of Committee on Recreation, Athletics an d

Physical Education .

The President added that the cost of implementatio n

of the Athletic report (estimated at some $11,000 .00 fo r

1958-59, rising to about $40,000 .00 for a full session with

participation in a Western Canadian Intercollegiate Union ,

increasing enrolment, increasing coaching service, an d

expansion of the women's athletic programme) would have t o

be borne in part at least by an increase in student fees .

Further costs would arise in due course with necessar y

increase in staff of the School of Physical Education .

Increase in Value o fNorthern Electri cFellowship

The Board reported approval, subject to Senat e

action, of an increase in value of the Northern Electric

Fellowship . This would be included in the recommendations

of the Committee on Prizes, Scholarships and Bursaries late r

in the meeting .

The Secretary read a recommendation from th e

Faculty of Arts and Science that Senate should undertake a n

investigation of the various possible divisions of th e

academic year to determine whether or not it would be advisabl e

to consider a change from the present two-term system .

Council be set up to co-ordinate research an dinstruction in the field of child study throughoutthe University, without being directly concerned withany nursery or kindergarten school that might b eestablished on the campus ;

(b) That the College of Education be encouraged to set u pa nursery-kindergarten school, making these facilitie savailable to other Faculties and Departments of theUniversity if they wished to participate .

In referring to a recommendation in the report

that the Child Development Centre should financially be the

responsibility of the College of Education, the Chairman

pointed out that the budget of the Faculty and College o f

Education was part of the University budget, requirin g

approval of the University Board of Governors, and therefore

it would be preferable to amend this section of the repor t

to indicate that the Centre should financially be the

responsibility of the Provincial Department of Education or

some other appropriate body, outside of the University .

Victoria College

The Secretary read a letter from Dr . Hickman ,

expressing his regret that special events at Victoria Colleg e

in connection with the B . C . Centennial prevented the

College representatives from attending the Senate meeting .

Dr . Hickman also congratulated Dr . MacKenzie, Dean Soward ,

Dr . Daniells and Dr . McGregor on the University's Academi c

Symposium and Special Congregations .

A report on registration at Victoria College for

1958-59 was circulated for information .

Mr . Keate reported that the Victoria Chamber o f

Commerce was actively studying the possibility of developin g

a liberal arts college in Victoria . In this connection

Dean Andrew suggested that the Statement on the Future o f

Victoria College might be brought forward and reviewed .
