Mayne Island resident Beverley Reid's documentary film about street children in the Philippines garnered the Golden Apple, an award given to the winner of the United States Educational Film and Video Festival.

Reid, Window Seats Films production company members and Vancouver cinematographer Randy Woolgar topped some 1,200 entries in taking the prize.

Reid produced the Sim which features Prescilla, a ten-year-old girl who has called the streets of Manilla home for the past seven years.

Prescilla is one of about 200,000 street kids in Manilla, said Reid.

"They are little children on the street. It's alarming to see how isolated they are from their families. Children in lots of cases very much have to fend for themselves."

However, the documentary shows the hope and dignity in Prescilla's life and tries to show western children that there is a connection between them and children in the Third World.

"The common threads or experiences will make children here feel a connection to Prescilla and her friends. This connection will help Canadian kids better appreciate the problems that their Filippino counterparts face."

"We wanted to promote curiosity, interest and understanding." Reid hopes The Street Where Prescilla Lives sensitises western

children to the fact that others are having a "tough time," but not to feel sorry for those children and instead, try to help them.

Prescilla now lives in a group home where she receives shelter and food. She goes to school where she is doing well, said Reid. The film shows Prescilla attending school, performing activities with her friends, and articulating her hopes for the future.

Canadians quietly supporting a unified country Children's rendition of O Canada brings tears to eyes

This is the fourth in a series of 10 columns from community newspapers across Canada looking at this country, its people and their future.

By M A R G HENNIGAR Guest Columnist

My family, and I publish community newspapers in Bridgewater, a small town 150 kilometres south of Halifax, Nova Scotia. This is a ruggedly-beautiful coastal area, peaceful, English-speaking and a favourite retreat for Upper Canadian artists, actors, politicians and writers.

Our three papers serve all of

Lunenburg County which comprises three towns and two municipalities. Most of the 50,000 people depend on fishing, forestry, tourism or tires—with some farming and service industries thrown in for variety.

I think most of our readers strongly favour Canadian unity. I can't be sure because, for some reason, Canadian unity and the constitution have not yet become controversial issues here.

But I don't think that's because the people here are apathetic. Our

readers contribute lots of great letters to the editor on every topic they can think of — except on the constitution and the future of Canada.

I don't think their silence on the subject indicates a lack of concern, or that it is because they don't have strong opinions on the issue. I think the people here are reluctant to debate constitutional issues simply because they are typica l ly Canadian and everybody knows that typical Canadians consider patriotism a deeply personal and very private emotion. Even

Canadians who are passionately patriotic carefully control those feelings in public.

I believe the people in this part of the country stand firmly behind Canadian unity and that most would be willing to make compromises to keep Canada whole.

They haven't said so in letters to the editor. I haven't heard them declaring their feelings from a soapbox in the park. But I have noticed that, in their own quiet, unobtrusive ways, the people of

Lunenburg Country are working to promote Canadian unity.

I see more Canadian flags flying these days and I know that people have served on, or appeared before, various constitutional committees. We've submitted our share of briefs on Canadian unity from Lunenburg County.

Just recently, a Unity Committee was formed here. And other committees are already planning special celebrations for Canada's 125th birthday party.

As well, they are looking to the future by encouraging patriotism in the younger generation. Last fall,

"She is one kid who I think wi l l get out. She loves school and she does really well at it. She wants to be a lawyer . . . and help her friends."

"So there is hope." Prescilla was chosen to be fea

tured after discussions with Manilla social agencies who supplied Reid with information on where street children lived.

"We found her quite fast." Prescilla was able to speak some

English, and was outgoing and keen to do the film.

Filippino street kids all work and have their own code of ethics. Some vend cigarettes or gum, others sweep sidewalks for breakfast, said Reid.

"They have no respect for kids who just beg. In that little culture things are frowned upon. They have dignity."

featured in the film. They support their seven siblings and parents with what they scrounge. They both have tuberculosis.

"It's amazing how quickly you become part of their lives. The first day is overpowering what you are seeing but in two days you become part of the way they are living."

Reid said she has difficulty dis-

our K i w a n i s C l u b provided Canadian flags and tapes of our national anthem to all our schools. They did it because they realized that, while not singing our national anthem may be typically Canadian, a strong, united Canada needs people who are not embarrassed to stand up and say they are proud to be Canadian.

Not long ago one of our reporters rushed back from an assignment at an elementary school to relate an unusual experience.

"Those kids were in assembly, singing O Canada" she said breathlessly. "Only they were singing it. I mean they weren't staring at the floor with their hands in their pockets, they weren't shuffling their feet and mouthing the words in embarrassment, the way adults sing it—those youngsters knew the words and belted them out as though they really meant them. I've never heard anything l ike it before," she said incredulously.

"I had tears in my eyes, goosebumps all over me and a great big lump in my throat. I'm still choked up, just thinking about it."

Imagine, a Canadian national anthem bringing tears to the eyes,

raising goosebumps and putting a lump in one's throat? How frightfully un-Canadian — yet how appropriate in the midst of a unity crisis!

If only adult Canadians had the courage to express their true patriotism we might discover that that is the key to keeping the country together.

For i f we could learn to respect, appreciate and accept one another's differences, Canada could t^xome the ^reaieii counif) on earth — a country of incredible strength and unlimited promise that is the unique sum of its wondrously diverse parts.

tancing herself from what she has experienced in the Philippines.

"You come back here and find it hard to believe people live that way."

Western children watching the film have been encouraged to send Prescilla postcards and she has received about 2,000 of them from the 500,000 kids who have seen the film, said Reid.

A lot of "grim footage"was shot for the film. When editing, Reid "had to be cautious because we didn't want to turn a lot of kids off."

The Street Where Prescilla Lives, finished in April, 1991, was a result of Reid's interest in Third World issues and children. She has produced other films on the same theme, one which focused on Guatemala. She hopes to produce two more films in the fall in India and Bangladesh about children and the environment.

Funding for the Filippino film came from the Canadian International Development Agency, Save the Children Fund, Global Village and a number of other agencies, including some Ha>eJ ir.thePtuli pines

The British Columbia Teachers' Federation donated money to duplicate and distribute the film. Prescilla will be shown on YTVthis fall.

The Golden Apple A w a r d ceremony is scheduled for May 23 in Oakland. Reid hopes to attend but Memorial Day falls the same weekend and "the planes are all booked up."

Can almost hear things growing as spring heralds planting time

The maple puts her corals on in May

While loitering frosts about the lowlands cling

— James Russell Lowell Most of the spring bedding will

be starting to fade by now and those of you who were not fooled into planting summer bedding too early will be itching to so so now.

By DEREK DUFFY Driftwood Contributor

As in the verse at the beginning of this column, there are still some chances of frost during this month but whatever ground frosts there are at this time will do no damage to good, strong bedding plants. So it is fairly safe now.

Slugs How about those slugs, eh?

There are so many slugs living happily around Salt Spring this time of year that it seems an impossible task to combat them.

I look at it like this: within nature there are times for all insects and provided you have patience, you can discourage particularly veracious ones from eating your crops by employing several methods that collectively keep a steady balance between the natural cycle and your garden.

Wood ash spread frequently during the season disrupts their mucus trails, together with beer baits (containers of stale beer buried around the garden with open tops so the slugs can fall in). These can be a very effective control and can send the slugs off in other directions.

Also try sacrificial plantings of some of their favourite broad-leaved crops in a place easily accessible to them. Then of course there is hand picking.

Bulbs Tulips, daffodils, snow drops,

hyacinths and all spring bulbs can be dug now and should be hung to dry in order for them to derive all the goodness from the tops.

When they are dry, they can either be stored t i l l fa l l or reintroduced elsewhere in the garden. It is enormously rewarding to naturalize some bulbs into lawns and it becomes a magical site for next spring.

It is wise however to chose early flowering varieties as they can be cut down before the grass becomes too hard to handle. Galanthus, scil-la and endymion, aconites and anenomes all take well in lawns and can be mowed now or during this month.

This is the month for planting outside, so everything from vegetables to perennials should be placed in their garden posi-tions.The exception is those really tender plants — peppers, basil, tomatoes — which can still die or suffer from cold winds and overnight lows.

at this time of year, especially grass. It is a good idea to lower the mower now and for the rest of the month, not enough to scalp the lawns but short enough so that if you miss a week or so because of inclement weather, it will still be manageable when you can cut it.

Spring is such a beautiful time that it should not be fraught with worries about getting behind or destructive pests. Just remember as nature achieves and maintains an equal balance then so will you. I have never yet known pests or predators to annihilate any species. It would be senseless. Then why do we not think it senseless to try to exterminate animals around the garden? Especially when they are such an integral part of the good chain.

Talk to you again next month. Remember to write me with your garden problems care of the Driftwood, Box 250, Ganges, VOS 1E0 and I will publish my reply.

' ISLAND LIVING

Sounds of spring on Galiano Woodwind quintet

scores A group of woodwind in

strumentalists from the Vancouver Chamber players gave a concert in the North Galiano Hall recently.

By ALISTAIR ROSS Driftwood Columnist

For some of the selections pianist Anthony Booker of Victoria joined the other five, all from Vancouver. Very professional all of them, they never-the-less have regular nine-to-Gve jobs as well in order to make a living.

The program began with Malcolm Arnold's brief Wind Quintet whose three movements are based on familiar sea shanties. It was not at all difficult for listeners to pick out "What shall we do with the drunken sailor" in the first movement.

The slower second movement contrasted well with the gaiety and humour of the first and third.

The second selection was Mozart's Quintet in E Flat major, K 452. The highlight of the concert for many, Mozart's melodies soared delicately, whether played by oboe, clarinet or piano, then interwoven with other melodies all still moving from one instrument to another.

All five players were soloists at times, then all would submerge their prominence to the unity of the whole. No compact disc, tape or video could hope to equal the mar

vel of a live concert. During the second movement

the eyes of one member of the audience wandered to a window at the side of the hall and there it was she said, "Spring and new growth, a tapestry of sound within, and another, of colour, without."

After an intermission where refreshments were served and socialising took place between the musicians and the audience, the concert resumed with a Caprice for flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon and piano by Camille Saint Saens. Written for a performance tour of Russian and Denmark, the piece, according to commentor Victoria

Gray, gave lots of scope for showing off—and so it did.

The official programme closed with a sextet for piano and wind instruments by Francis Poulenc. The piece, straddling the romantic and the modern musical styles had many lyrical moments and many tempo changes. At times the six players achieved almost the effect of a full orchestra. The piece presented a challenge to both the musicians and the audience, and the challenge was met.

An encore, the fourth movement

GALIANO ISLAND F r o m Page B8

of a Woodwind Quintet by Franz D a n z i , a contemporary of M o z a r t ' s , concluded the programme.

From the musicians The late Dorothy Munroe,

whose piano was donated to the North Hall in her memory, was the instrument used by pianist Tony Booker for the concert.

Tuned in readiness for the concert by Galiano's Dan McDougall, Booker spoke very highly of the instrument and its excellent sound: "It just needs more playing."

Others in the group commented about the sound created: "Those old wooden walls are wonderful acoustically, some halls have acoustic tiles on their ceilings and the sound tends to disappear, but not so here."

These were comforting words to a hall director who had been on the Hall Committee long enough to have known Dorothy Monroe, and to remember the occasion when there was a move to cover the old ceiling and put in more modem lighting.

The plans went nowhere on the ceiling "beautification," there were more important things to do at the time (such as a well, a water system and plumbing). It seems it was just as well things were done the way they were.

100 years of schooling 1992 marks the one hundredth

anniversary of the establishment of the first school on Galiano. It was opened in November 1882, and located near Georgeson Bay.

In pioneer times, as today, populations shifted, and there was usually just enough school age children in a pioneer community to qualify for an operating grant from the government. Therefore schools did not always operate for long.

Galiano's first school lasted only a very short time, but reopened again in 1895. The school continued at that site until 1908.

In 1900 a second school opened in South Galiano, this one overlooking Whaler Bay.

Lions seafood dinner It was full house at the activity

centre for the Galiano Lions' annual seafood dinner. More than 200 dined on every conceivable kind of local fish and seafood, much of which was donated. A l l was prepared on the island by islanders.

One of the Lions' most successful seafood dinners in some time, the event will have raised a considerable amount towards Lions' on and off-island charities. Much credit for its success must go to the organizers, Galiano's fishermen and their families and to Bert Schultz of the Hummingbird Inn.

Featured during the dinner hour were is land musicians Gary Newstead, Brad Prevedoros and Barbara and Bruce Landmark. Their participation and the music which resulted was a popular addition to the evening's programme.

Islanders were happy to welcome back former Galiano Lions president Roy Harding and his wife Mary, who were at the dinner from their present home at Vesuvius Bay.

Another ex-Lions president. Harold Wike of North Galiano, won the colour television in the raffle. A second North Galiano resident, Phyllis Stafford, won a $100 prize.

Mother's Day wil l be celebrated on Saturna May 10 with a pancake breakfast at the hall hosted by the Lion's Club.

By GAIL TRAFFORD Driftwood Staff Writer

The menu includes the traditional pancakes, sausages, orange juice and coffee or milk. A l l mothers will be presented with a live plant. The cost is $4 for adults and $2 for children. Breakfast is served from 9 a.m. to 12 noon and all proceeds will go to the Lions Club projects.

Immunization clinic A tetanus (lockjaw) immuniza

tion clinic wil l be held at the J.E. Money medical clinic Thursday, May 14 from 1:30 to 2 p.m. on Thursday, May 14.

Community Health Nurse Jane Cameron will administer the shots free of charge to anyone who is due for a booster.

To be properly immunized a person should have three tetanus shots at some time in life with a booster every 10 years.

Tetanus is a bacteria which often lives in dirt. Gardeners, farmers and children are often exposed to the spores of this bacteria. There is no naturally occurring immunity to this disease and it is fatal in up to 70 per cent of non-im

munized persons. Tetanus can enter the body

through even a minor cut or abrasion. Infection is easily prevented by immunization so be sure to check your records. If you are due for your shots be sure to attend the clinic May 14.

Barbecue meeting A Saturna Lamb Barbecue

meeting was held May 3. The first woodcutting bee is scheduled for Sunday, May 17. Time and location wil l be posted at the stores. A workbee schedule will be mailed to all island residents in the near future.

The Logo Contest was won by Jacques Campbell. Her design depicts the mountains of Saturna at sunrise under a rising maple leaf.

It was decided that local residents will be able to sell arts and crafts in one of the booths with a percentage of all sales going to the barbecue fund. Workers who attend all the workbees will be entitled to a special discount.

Chuck Alp is arranging musical entertainment for the festivities. If you would like to play or if you know someone who would volunteer their time and talents please give him a call at 539- 3118.

Chum released Saturna school children released

their chum salmon, raised in the

classroom, into Lyall Creek May 1. The students raised more than 175 fry. Their fish were supplemented by 25,000 Goldstream chum fry raised by Fisheries Canada. Don Lowen, fisheries officer, arrived with a truck and tank holding the fish.

The students helped to release the salmon using plastic baggies and running from the truck to the stream. It was a delightful exercise and the children were thrilled to be part of revitalizing the creek.

Local volunteers Rick Jones, Bi l l Douglas, Paul Deveau and Harry Brown were on hand to assist. The fry headed out to sea almost immediately. They are expected to return in 1995.

Before that date changes must be made in the stream bed where it crosses East Point Road to allow the fish to swim upstream to spawn. Any assistance in work on the stream bed would be appreciated. Please call Rick Jones for more details at 539-2641. Batter up

The inter-island baseball program has begun for the season.

Sunday, May 3, Saturna hosted Pender, for a double header. It ended in a tie with one game a piece. Saturna was scheduled to travel to Mayne Monday evening for another game.

ISLAND LIVING

Wedding unites Piper, Kee Family and friends gathered at

Saturna Island's little "Church in the Woods" to witness the marriage of K J . Piper and Darlene Mary Kee on April 25.

The groom is the son of Don Piper of Saturna and Shirley Piper of West Vancouver. His roots with the island go back to the late 1970s and early 1980s when he and his family lived on Satuma and he attended elementary school there.

Darlene, originally from Prince George and more recently from Vancouver, is the daughter of

SATURNA

David Kee of Prince George and Rosemary Kee of Victoria.

The bride looked radiant in a cocktail length gown of white satin with lace overlay featuring a lace scal loped neckl ine and lace sleeves. The bodice lace was trimmed with mother of pearl sequins. She carried a bouquet of lily of the valley, orchids, lilacs, roses and a variety of other exotic flowers.

For her walk down the aisle to meet her future husband, the bride was accompanied by her sister Lorna Kee of Vancouver and

Drumming The first weekend of May had

Saturna drumming. Dido, a professional drummer, who has travelled to Africa to study the culture and tradition of native drummers presented workshops of his art. The school children, joined by intermediate students from Mayne Island, participated in a drum workshop Friday afternoon.

Michelle DiSilva of Kamloops. They were dressed in purple knee-length satin gowns trimmed with rhinestones and carried bouquets of white lilies and dark pink orchids.

Best man was Darwyn Jones of Vancouver. Jerome Rozitis, also of Vancouver, served as usher at the church.

F o l l o w i n g the wedding ceremony, which was performed by Rev . Herb Oldf ie ld of Brentwood Bay, Rod Fraser of Saturna Island piped the new couple out of the church and into the community hall where the reception was held.

The bride's brother, Ron Kee of Vancouver, acted as master of ceremonies for the evening and her grandmother, Mary Hoskins, proposed the toast to the bride.

Family and friends, who had travelled from as far away as Prince George and Calgary, were also guests at a Sunday morning pancake breakfast at the hall put on by the families of the bride and groom.

Fol lowing a honeymoon to Australia, the couple will make their home in Surrey.
