MORNING MEETING Greetings Div. 8! Did you get a chance to see the posters at MRE? If you have a brother or sister that attends MRE, his/her teacher probably made a poster too!

Zoom Meeting Remember we have our class meeting tomorrow

at 11 am. It is also PET DAY. And Mr. Hetherington is joining us! He will lead a Daily Physical Activity so please dress comfortably and set up in a spot where you can see your device and move around safely.

Wednesdays are the day for Would You Rather? See if someone in your family will play with you!

Sometimes you have to choose between two really good things or

two things you’d rather NOT do. Some of these choices might be

easy for you but some might be tough. Once you have made

your choice and have thought of your reasons why, then ask

your family the same question. Compare your reasons why...did

anyone change their mind?

Today’s question is from Ava:

Would you rather be a piece of paper or a pencil?

LITERACY ~ WRITING We are having PET DAY tomorrow at our class meeting. You may show your pet (if he/she cooperates). If you don’t have a pet, you may draw a picture of a pet that you would like to have. Here is a writing task about pets. In your opinion, which animal makes the best pet? Please form a clear opinion about the topic and support that opinion. You might already have real-life experiences with your own pet. Is your dog or cat or guinea pig or fish the best pet? Or would another animal make the best pet? I am providing three choices for your written work. Lined paper OR either of the following sheets. Choose whichever format helps you best organize your thoughts.

For your pre-writing (brainstorming), think about this: which animal makes the best pet? Now do a ‘pair share’ with a family member. Give your opinion and give at least 4 reasons why. Then, ask what their opinion is, and what their reasons are. Next, organize your thoughts. If you are using one of the worksheets, write down at least 4 reasons. You can do more of course! Just write in point form, it is just to get your ideas out of your head and onto paper. Or you could also make a web like we have done in the past. You could put your preferred temperature in the middle circle and then add 4 or more circles around it for your ideas.

Print your name and the date at the top of your page. Start your writing (first draft). Start with a topic sentence so your reader knows what the paragraph will be about. Here are two examples: Did you know that I have the best pet ever? My cat’s name is Ollie and he is such a fluff ball! He purrs all the time and loves cuddling with a book and a blanket (just like me)! Have you ever met my dog Dumpling! If you have, then you know a friendly dog that does tricks and greets you when you come home is the best pet ever! Then start adding sentences that support your opinion. Today, try using this new skill – using link words when joining your supporting reasons. Here are some linking words and phrases that you can use.

A closing sentence uses synonyms to restate your opinion. I tried not to use the word ‘best’ in my closing sentence since I had used it in my topic sentence.

In conclusion, I hope you agree that a ________________________ is spectacular/wonderful/awesome/sensational/great to have as a pet. Grade 4s-please try to make yours a bit longer by adding more than 4 reasons or adding extra details to your reasons. Or you could write another opinion piece.

Families – when we are writing, it is important that the students

focus on the meaning of their message first, so I encourage them to write freely on their first draft and get all their ideas down. We will focus on proofreading after all their ideas have been recorded.

Now proofreading! Remember our chart from school: Have you included:

Capitals

O overall appearance

P unctuation

S pelling Check it over to make sure it is your best work!

LITERACY ~ INDEPENDENT READING Choose books from home or online. Remember when you are reading online, you must be reading the whole time! If you are on RAZ you are not playing on your rocket and if you are on EPIC you are not changing avatars or looking at your badges. Taking the comprehension quizzes on these sites is still ok during your reading time. MOVEMENT BREAK – move, have fun, drink some water!

MATH ~ GRADE 3 Today we are working on: a Fractions Secret Code!

Families - Throughout the unit on fractions, students will have

opportunities to develop the concept that fraction parts are equal shares or equal-sized portions of a whole or unit. They will also have opportunities to demonstrate an understanding that there are different ways to represent a fraction (part of a group, number line, fraction bar, fraction circle), as well as matching/drawing pictures that connect to symbols.

MATH ~ GRADE 4 Today we will do a little math project! Please read the instructions on the following page. You will have to make a design for the kitchen floor, using white tiles, blue tiles and tiles with flowers on them. When done, write a fraction and a decimal of white tiles, blue tiles and flowered tiles. I did one too, as an example. Two options for this work, you can either print the math sheet and work directly on it OR you can draw a 100-grid and use that. I have also included a multiplication review sheet that you may do instead or in addition to the decimal sheet…whatever you choose!
