CHURCH-WIDE LENTEN STUDY

“Restored: Finding Redemption

in Our Mess”

March 5 - April 9

10:15 am • The Hub

God created us for an amazing purpose, but we can

find ourselves “out of sync” with God. We

experience brokenness and pain. We wonder if

abundant life in Christ is possible. Join us for a Lenten

study by Tom Berlin called, “Restored: Finding Redemption In Our

Mess.”

This 6-week study will be taught by our pastors, and held in the Hub at

10:15 am starting March 5. Come and discover healing, restoration,

and joy!

Roll Bake Reminder

If you ordered rolls, please remember to pick them

up in Fellowship Hall between morning services on

Sunday, March 5. If you didn’t place an order,

there will be extras available to purchase ($3.50 -

plain; $4.00 - cinnamon).

Tiny Home Fundraiser Challenge

Have you heard? Cass Community Social Services is building tiny

homes for low income people in its area in Detroit. About 10 have

been constructed and are occupied. People will rent for seven years

with the option to purchase.

Do you know? The houses range from

250 to 400 square feet, each has a front

porch or rear patio to extend living space.

and is built on a foundation. The property

has been acquired, and lots are roughly 30 x

100 feet. The houses are built by professional

trades people, with volunteer teams

managing the finishing work. The Reverend

Faith Fowler estimates that a 250 square foot

house will cost $30,000.

So what’s new? A member of our church (who wishes to remain

anonymous) has offered a challenge to our congregation: this person

will give matching funds for all monies given by our congregation to

build a tiny house through Cass Community Social Services.

If you would like to contribute to this worthy cause, please make a

check out to “FUMC” with “Cass Tiny Home” on the memo line.

Questions? Please contact Rev. Dr. J. D. Landis, [email protected]

or 835.6797 ext. 117.

SEE WHAT'S NEW AT THE CHURCH LIBRARY!

If you haven't visited the church library lately, come check it out. Some new items include:

Never Forget by Jody Hedlund: In the author's

newest book, Abbie Watson is content to spend her

days tending Rose Island Lighthouse. Her grandpa is

the head light keeper, but his senility may lead to

their eviction. Since leaving the island would kill him,

Abbie will do anything to keep him in the one place

he knows and loves. Wealthy Nathaniel Winthrop III’s

wild living has gained him a reputation as the ‘bad

boy’ among the elite social circles of Newport. After

a blow to the head in a yachting accident washes

him up on Rose Island, Nathaniel has no memories of

his past. Abbie tends the wounded stranger in her home only to realize

he assumes they’re married

Front Porch Tales by Philip Gulley: Master storyteller

Philip Gulley shares tender and hilarious real-life

moments that capture the important truths of

everyday life. When he began writing newsletter

essays for the 12 members of his Quaker meeting in

Indiana, he had no idea one of them would find its

way to radio commentator Paul Harvey Jr. and be

read on the air to 24 million people. Fourteen books

later, Gulley still entertains as well as inspires from his

small-town front porch.

The Forum Class: “Heretics for Armchair Theologians”

Sundays, March 5 – April 9 • 10:15 – 11:15 • Hearth Room

We proclaim our faith in the Apostles’ Creed and

Nicene Creed. It’s what followers of Jesus have

proclaimed from the very beginning; or is it a little

more complicated? Join the Forum Class as we learn

about Gnosticism, Marcionism, Arianism and other

competing beliefs that were eventually declared

heretical. Rev. Pam Buchholz will present a Powerpoint

overview each week and facilitate discussion. The

book, “Heretics for Armchair Theologians” by Justo

and Catherine Gonzalez, is not required for

participants, but is very readable (contains cartoons!)

Saturday Breakfast & Program

Saturday, March 18 • 8:30 am

Little Theater Everyone is invited to join us on March 18 for a delicious breakfast, and

special guest speaker, Don Sheets. Don has served as Executive Vice-

President and Chief Financial Officer of Dow Corning since 2003. He will

speak to us about the changing landscape with the Dow-Dupont

merger. This will be especially helpful for those who are interested in the

impact of the merger on our church and community.

Breakfast will be prepared by Pamela Wilson. Cost of breakfast is a free

-will donation. Please RSVP by Monday, March 13 to Tonya, 835.6797

ext. 110 or [email protected].

Get Connected! FUMC has many opportunities for you

to get connected within the

congregation. Volunteering is one way

to do that! If you have a special

talent, skill, or have time to offer, I'd like

to help you find the right group or

ministry to join. Contact me, Noel Contardi, at 835.6797 ext. 114, or

send me an email at [email protected].
