But the cushion was not enough as the Rockets scored first in the second half and took the lead 13- 14. With the game in the balance and the Rockets holding on to their fragile lead, Cuevas was called upon one more time. He sent the ball through the uprights from 37 yards and helped the Mustangs re- gain the lead. The defense held firm, frustrating the Rockets attempts to move the ball and score. LyondellBasell donatedstainless steel and standardcarbon steel pipes valued atapproximately $15,000,which will be used in train-ing San Jacinto Collegewelding technology stu-dents.

“The carbon steel pipeswill be used for training stu-dents at every level, and thedonation of the stainlesssteel pipes is especially sig-nificant because it will beused in training advancedstudents, such as thoselearning Gas Tungsten ArcWelding,” commented EddieFoster, North Campus in-dustrial technology depart-ment chair. “To myknowledge, it’s the largestsingle donation of stainlesssteel pipes the North Cam-pus has ever received.”

Some of the donated car-bon steel pipes have a thinlayer of rust, which moststeel acquires over time.“Rust on the carbon steeldoes not diminish the valueof the pipe for training pur-poses,” commented Foster.“Most things made of steelwill develop a surface layerof rust over time, but therust can be easily removedby surface grinding.”

Stainless steel is typical-ly around four times moreexpensive than standardcarbon steel and has a dif-ferent alloy composition, re-quiring welders to usedifferent techniques. “Hav-ing a large quantity of stain-less steel pipe allows ourstudents to gain valuablehands-on experience withdifferent types of metal, andbecome more versatile,” hecommented. “It’s an advan-tage for a graduate applyingfor a job to have experiencewelding with stainless steel. We really appreciate this do-nation from Lyondell, avaluable industry partner

OPINION✯

By FRANCIS P. CHURCH,First published in The New York Sun in 1897

We take pleasure in answering thus prominentlythe communication below, expressing at the sametime our great gratification that its faithful author isnumbered among the friends of The Sun:

Dear Editor—

I am 8 years old. Some of my little friends say thereis no Santa Claus. Papa says, “If you see it in TheSun, it’s so.” Please tell me the truth, is there a SantaClaus?

VirginiaO’Hanlon

Virginia, yourlittle friends arewrong. They havebeen affected by theskepticism of askeptical age. Theydo not believeexcept they see. They think thatnothing can bewhich is not com-prehensible by theirlittle minds. Allminds, Virginia, whether they bemen’s or children’s,are little. In thisgreat universe of ours, man is a mere insect, an ant,in his intellect as compared with the boundless worldabout him, as measured by the intelligence capable ofgrasping the whole of truth and knowledge.

Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists ascertainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your lifeits highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would bethe world if there were no Santa Claus! It would be asdreary as if there were no Virginias. There would beno childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to maketolerable this existence. We should have no enjoy-ment, except in sense and sight. The eternal lightwith which childhood fills the world would be extin-guished.

Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well notbelieve in fairies. You might get your papa to hiremen to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas eve tocatch Santa Claus, but even if you did not see SantaClaus coming down, what would that prove? Nobodysees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is noSanta Claus. The most real things in the world arethose that neither children nor men can see. Did youever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not,but that’s no proof that they are not there. Nobodycan conceive or imagine all the wonders there areunseen and unseeable in the world.

You tear apart the baby’s rattle and see whatmakes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering theunseen world which not the strongest man, nor eventhe united strength of all the strongest men that everlived could tear apart. Only faith, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain and view andpicture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it allreal? Ah, Virginia, in all this world there is nothingelse real and abiding.

No Santa Claus! Thank God! he lives and livesforever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay 10times 10,000 years from now, he will continue tomake glad the heart of childhood.

Francis P. Church’s editorial, “Yes Virginia, Thereis a Santa Claus” was an immediate sensation, andwent on to became one of the most famous editorialsever written. It first appeared in the The New YorkSun in 1897, almost a hundred years ago, and wasreprinted annually until 1949 when the paper wentout of business.

Virginia O’Hanlon went on to graduate fromHunter College with a Bachelor of Arts degree at age21. The following year she received her Master’s fromColumbia, and in 1912 she began teaching in the NewYork City school system, later becoming a principal. After 47 years, she retired as an educator. Through-out her life she received a steady stream of mail abouther Santa Claus letter, and to each reply she attachedan attractive printed copy of the Church editorial.Virginia O’Hanlon Douglas died on May 13, 1971, atthe age of 81, in a nursing home in Valatie, N.Y.

Yes, Virginia, Thereis a Santa Claus

AUSTIN — Gov. GregAbbott was in Washington,D.C., on Dec. 8 to partici-pate in a news conferencewith U.S. Senator andpresidential candidate TedCruz, R-Texas, who rolledout his proposed State Ref-ugee Security Act.

Abbott said in a Dec. 9news release that Cruz’sbill “gives states and gov-ernors the tools to rejectthe resettlement of a refu-gee in that state unlessthere is adequate assur-ance that the refugee doesnot present a securityrisk.”

“America is a charitablenation, but we cannot al-low charity for some tocompromise security forall,” Abbott said. “Congressintended to give states asubstantial role in the ref-ugee resettlement process. The federal governmentand resettlement agencieshave sidestepped that role.My top priority as governoris to keep Texas citizenssafe and this legislationhelps me do that,” he add-ed.

Cruz’s bill, S. 2363, di-rects the federal Office ofRefugee Resettlement tonotify the state agency re-sponsible for coordinatingthe placement or resettle-ment of an alien refugeenot later than 21 days be-fore the alien's arrival inthe state. The bill statesthat no alien refugee shallbe placed or resettled in astate if the governor certi-fies to the Office of Refu-gee Resettlement that ithas failed, in the sole de-termination of the gover-nor, to provide adequateassurance that such per-son does not present a se-curity risk to the state.

On Nov. 25, the TexasCatholic Conference, thepublic policy voice of Tex-as’ Catholic bishops, pub-lished a statement, saying,“We firmly believe that itis possible to maintain se-curity at home while alsowelcoming refugees.”

TEA chief notes pas-sage of act

Texas Education Com-missioner Michael Will-iams issued a statementon Dec. 9, following Con-gress’ final passage of thefederal Every StudentSucceeds Act, legislationthat succeeds the NoChild Left Behind Act.

Williams said the act“represents a significantshift in education author-ity away from the federalgovernment and a returnof greater control to thestate and local level. ForTexas, this legislationbrings an end to the on-going requests for federalwaivers made necessaryby requirements few ifany states could evermeet.”

Sales tax revenuedecreases

Texas ComptrollerGlenn Hegar on Dec. 9announced sales tax rev-enue for the state in No-vember was $2.58 billion, down 3.3 percent com-pared to November 2014.

“Sales tax revenue de-clined again due to re-duced spending in oil andgas-related sectors,” He-gar said. “Remittancesfrom other sectors, includ-ing construction, restau-rants and retail trade, continued to grow. The netdecrease in sales tax re-ceipts is in line with theOctober Certification Rev-enue Estimate.”

Furthermore, Hegarsaid, he will send cities, counties, transit systemsand special purpose tax-ing districts $626.3 mil-

lion in local sales tax allo-cations for December, 3 per-cent less than in December2014. These allocations arebased on sales made in Oc-tober by businesses thatreport tax monthly.

DPS offers anti-thefttips

The Texas Departmentof Public Safety on Dec. 7posted a reminder to Tex-ans about the increased po-tential for vehicle theftsand burglaries during theholiday season and advisedthe public to take extra pre-cautions, such as:

“Never leave your carrunning unattended, evenfor a quick visit to a busi-ness or store. Never leavekeys in the car or ignition, inside a locked garage, or inhide-a-key boxes. Alwaysroll up your windows andlock the car, even if it isparked at your home. Whenpossible, always park inhigh-traffic, well-lightedareas.”

Also: “Install an anti-theft device that locks thesteering wheel, column orbrakes, especially if yourvehicle is considered to beat increased risk for theft.Never leave personal docu-ments, vehicle ownershiptitle or credit cards in yourvehicle. Always keep valu-ables or property hiddenout of sight or locked in thetrunk” and more.

TxDOT calls for soberrides

Texas Department ofTransportation’s “PlanWhile You Can” campaign, launched Dec. 7, urges par-tygoers to plan for a soberride now through Jan. 1.

The campaign, whichruns in tandem with an in-crease in Texas DPS patrolsand enforcement, includesa statewide tour featuringan interactive dodge ballgame that uses customgaming technology to rep-licate the effects of alcoholon a person’s reflexes.

Give the‘Write’ Giftthis HolidaySeason

(NAPSI)—Manyfamilies have foundthat letting little oneswrite letters to Santacan end up as a big giftto their parents.

That’s because it notonly gets kids into theholiday spirit, but it’s agreat way to improvetheir writing skills, boost creativity andhelp them with theirschoolwork for years tocome.

Here are seven waysto get kids writing:

1. Use fun writingtools. Choose—orcreate—decorativewriting paper and pickpens, pencils or high-lighters, bright colorsor clever designs.

2. If they’re writingto Santa, encouragethem to send morethan just a list of toys.Have them tell Santa abit about themselves—where they go to schooland what they like todo. When they tellSanta how good they’vebeen this year, havethem include examples, such as tying a sibling’sshoes or helping Momand Dad clean thehouse.

3. Older childrenwho’d rather not writeto Santa can still createa Christmas list forthemselves as well as alist of what they intendto get for others.

4. Write out holidaycards. Let family andfriends know howyou’ve been and thatyou’re thinking aboutthem. Children caneven draw pictures onthe card if there’s room.

5. Create place cardsfor holiday dinner.Write out each guest’sname and add a smalldrawing.

6. Write thank-younotes. This is animportant time of yearto be thankful for allthe gifts your childreceives. Thank-younotes are a way foryour kids to show theirappreciation.

7. Give the gift ofwriting. BIC Pencilsand Pens make terrificpresents and stockingstuffers.

There’s a lot to knowabout investing, so it’s agood idea to get some pro-fessional help. But with somany financial advisorsout there, how can youchoose one that’s right foryou?

You may have to inter-view several prospectivefinancial advisors beforedeciding on one. When youtalk to them, see if you canget a sense of how theymight work with you. Spe-cifically, try to answer thefollowing questions:

Does this financial advi-sor …

… Understand you? Per-haps above all else, youwant a financial advisorwho will take the time toget to know you and yourfamily, your goals andwhat’s important to you.

… Clearly explain in-vesting? Once you enterthe investment world, youwill likely be curious aboutit. Why is diversificationimportant? What’s a mar-ket correction? How do in-terest rate movementsaffect different invest-ments? You will want towork with someone whowill make the effort to ed-ucate you on investmenttopics and answer all yourquestions.

… Know your invest-ment style? Obviously, you’ll want someone whowill recommend only thoseinvestments that are inyour best interest and thatcan help you makeprogress toward yourgoals. Therefore, the per-son you choose needs to

What to look for from afinancial advisor

understand your invest-ment personality – that is,whether you are an aggres-sive, moderate or conserva-tive investor.

… Have a certain in-vestment philosophy? Youmay have your own invest-ment style and preferenc-es – and so do manyfinancial advisors. In fact, some financial advisorshave an overriding invest-ment philosophy that gov-erns many of theirrecommendations. Youneed to find this out beforeyou start working withsomeone.

… Communicate fre-quently? The most knowl-edgeable financial advisorin the world won’t be ofmuch help to you if he orshe is not a good commu-nicator. You need someonewho will regularly let youknow if you’re on track ormake suggestions if you’renot – even if you aren’tscheduled to meet for awhile. And, speaking ofconferring with your finan-cial advisor, you’ll wantsomeone who will meetwith you when it’s conve-nient for you, whether it’sin person or over thephone.

… Avoid making bigpromises? You want a fi-nancial advisor with theexpertise and experiencenecessary to help you

make the right moves. Andyou’ll want someone com-mitted to your success. Butthere’s a big difference be-tween someone who prom-ises to do the best possiblejob for you and someonewho promises big results.Be wary of financial advi-sors who claim they canconsistently achieve highreturns for you – there arevery few guarantees in theinvestment world.

… Explain how he orshe will be compensated?Financial advisors get paidin various ways, often insome combination of feesand commissions. Ask allpotential financial advi-sors how they get compen-sated; any reputableprofessional will be up-front about his or hercharges.

By finding the answersto these key questions, youshould be able to find a fi-nancial advisor who iswell-suited to work withyou. So take the time youneed to gather enough in-formation to feel confidentin your choice. After all, you’re enlisting the help ofsomeone who can have abig impact on your finan-cial future.
