ACC INNOVATION COMPETITION

Florida State University is seeking a team of undergraduate innovators to represent the university at the inaugural ACC Innovation Competition for a change to win $15,000! FSU invites all FSU undergrads with innovative ideas for new inventions or apps to apply at innovation.fsu.edu/events/acc. On April 5 and April 6, 2016, the 15 Universities of the ACC will each send a team to Georgia Tech to pitch innovative ideas for new products to a panel of judges in a televised competition. Prizes include $15,000 first place, $10,000 second place, and $5,000 for the People’s Choice award and benefits for all involved. Although April seems a long way off, FSU’s selection committee is anxious to begin reviewing student ideas immediately! They hope to select finalists for FSU’s team by the end of the calendar year, and to put together the final team for the trip to Georgia Tech by February. Team size may vary from one to four students. Only undergrads may enter. All it takes is a new idea with great potential to be developed into a prototype and pitched to investors by April. The selection committee can assist in putting together a team around your students’ great idea.

JAPANESE ANIMATION CLUB SEEKING VOLUNTEERS

Freecon is an Anime and Video game convention hosted by the Japanese Animation Club of Tallahassee and will feature many panels, vendors, contests, and (possibly) a movie. Because of the size of the event, they will need volunteers to set up, manage the panels and vendor booths, assist in the contests, and ensuring everyone at the convention has a bracelet. The convention is free! Last year’s convention was near the 2,500 person limit and the number of people need to be accounted for by the bracelets. The convention takes place on a weekend, Friday, March 25 through Sunday, March 27. Friday may be a part of the schedule, but Saturday will last from 8:00am to 8:00pm and Sunday from 10:00am to 6:00pm (hours may change). Volunteers will work in 4 to 6 hour shifts depending on the number of volunteers. If you have questions, email Joel Ochoa at [email protected] for more information.

TALLAHASSEE MARATHON Volunteers are needed for the upcoming Tallahassee Marathon on February 7, 2016. This will be the forty-second edition of this race, which is run 100% by volunteers. All profits are split evenly between two charities: the Gulf Winds Track Club, which supports running in the Tallahassee community, and FSU Coach Jimbo Fisher’s Kidz1stFund, which seeks to raise awareness and funds in support of research to fight Fanconi anemia. You can learn more about the marathon, including the course and community partners, online at tallahasseemarathon.com. Their biggest challenge right now is finding volunteers to help direct runners and keep participants safe from cars. Although they have over 70 police officers helping, volunteers are intersections are a huge help. These course volunteers will cheer and encourage the runners as well as instruct them regarding upcoming turns. They will hold cars coming out of or going into neighborhood streets only – not traffic control on main streets. Volunteers can sign up here and they will communicate with volunteers who have signed up as the race gets closer. For more information, please contact Eric Godin at [email protected] or (610) 291-9345.
