Koppel’s KingdomOver the course of eight short years, Reese

Koppel has gone from knowing nothing about bridge to being one of its fiercest advocates.

“Bridge can be here to stay if we help my generation appreciate its essence, and it is my goal to do everything I can to ensure this happens,” he says.

This enthusiasm prompted the ACBL Educational Foundation’s selection of Koppel as 2018 King of Bridge.

According to Barbara Heller, Ed Foundation president, “Reece received the most votes by the trustees who recognized his dedication to spreading the bridge bug by teaching bridge at a local retirement home and several local schools. Reece is also a teacher/counselor at residential summer bridge camps in Illinois and Michigan, which the Educational Foundation proudly supports with grants.”

The 18-year-old from Metairie LA was turned onto bridge by “The Cardturner,” Louis Sachar’s

fictional story about a teenager who, “forced” to drive his great-uncle to the local bridge club four times a week and serve as the blind man’s cardturner, develops his own interest in the game.

Schubiner, Wynston win Wagar Women’s Pairs

Sondra Schubiner and Linda Wynston, sitting in 11th place after the first final session of the Wagar Women’s Pairs, came through with a strong game in the final set to win the event by 3.07 matchpoints on a 25 top.

The winners’ 59.69% game was good enough to hold off a hard charge by Sharon Goldman and Justyna Zmuda, who scored 59.31% in the final set to climb from 12th place to the runner-up spot.

Goldman, of New York City, and Zmuda, a Polish star, were playing together for the second time. They debuted as partners at the Spring NABC in Philadelphia.

Winners of the Wagar Women’s Pairs: Sondra Schubiner and Linda Wynston.

Barrere takes Senior Swiss crown

Winners of the Truscott/USPC Senior Swiss Teams: Bruce Noda, Cris Barrere, Bill Harker and Mark Ralph.

A strong final match propelled the squad captain by Cris Barrere into the winner’s circle in the Truscott/USPC Senior Swiss Teams. Barrere, of Berkeley CA, played with teammates Bruce Noda of Corte Madera CA, Mark Ralph of San Francisco and Bill Harker of Santa Fe NM. Their four-session total with carryover was 134.27 victory points.

The Mini-Spingold 0–6000 KO teams attracted 36 teams; opening round action reduced the field to 16 tables for today’s second round. Eight head-to-head matches will cut the field in half for Thursday.

In the Mini-Spingold 0–2500 Teams, 20 teams played four three-way and four head-to-head matches in yesterday’s opener. Like the 6000 contest, eight teams will advance.

Top seeds plow forward in Spingold

The top 10 seeds in the round of 64 in the Spingold Knockout Teams had little difficulty advancing, many by lopsided margins, although many of the mid-range seeds were not so lucky.

No. 11 George Mittelman survived a challenge from the team captained by local Kevin Collins, the No. 54 seed, but Mittelman held on to win 115-111. Appealing a ruling Players in NABC+ events who want to appeal

a director’s ruling initiate the process by speaking with the director who delivered the original ruling. The table director will fill out paperwork regarding the appeal, and the appellants will explain what they believe to be wrong with the initial ruling. From there, the case may be handled by a variety of means. When the appeals reviewer receives the case, the circumstances of that particular case will determine whether the case can be resolved by the original staff (in the case of misapplication of Law or regulation, for instance), a panel of directors, or even a committee-type hearing which could include bridge experts.

Bidding commentary: As South, partner’s bidding shows two spades, not three. Partner usually supports directly with three trumps. To bid on in this sequence requires 16+ HCP. But if you are strong enough to bid again with this distribution, try 3♥ to show a singleton club as well

three hearts (your 2♦ rebid has denied four hearts) catering to a possible five hearts in partner’s hand. As North, holding two spades, a 2♥ rebid after partner bids 2♦ shows six hearts, exceptionally, five headed by three of the top four honor cards. Opener can pass 2♥ with a singleton heart.

Defensive commentary: As East, if declarer plays low at trick one, signal encouragement with

(For multi-session team events of three sessions or more, the entry fee is $64, $80 or $96 for teams of four, five or six, respectively. For team events of one or two sessions, the entry fee is $64.)

All other events.............$15 for ACBL members, $19 for inactive members per player per session

the ♣9, your highest equal spot card. Signaling with the ♣8 denies the ♣9!

Play commentary: With the ♣A marked on your right, duck the first club, ruff the club honor return and try to make as many low trumps as you can. Play the ♦A and ♦K, ruff a diamond low, ruff a club, ruff a diamond with the ♠A and lead dummy’s last club. If West still has a club, you can ruff, your seventh trick. The ♠K and ♥A bring your trick total to nine. Don’t worry about ruffing a diamond with the ♠A, it’s a loser in any case and it provides you with a dummy entry to ruff a club.

Defensive commentary: Defenders often give count when declarer initiates a suit (diamonds). However, when the count in the suit is known (diamonds is declarer’s second-bid suit), giving count is counter- productive. As West, if declarer plays a fourth diamond, intending to ruff with dummy’s ♠A, , discard your last club. Now declarer cannot enjoy a third club ruff and is held to eight tricks.

Use of the bidding box — Alerts and Announcements

When using bidding boxes, the ACBL requires that players tap the Alert strip and say “Alert” at the same time.

When making an Announcement, use the Announcement word (such as “transfer”) and tap the Alert strip at the same time. A player who Alerts or Announces a bid must make sure his opponents are aware that an Alert or Announcement has been made.

Timing the cash-outBy Barry Rigal

When this board was run in yesterday’s Daily Bulletin, the theme was beating 4♠. At some tables, the theme was how to defeat 3♠. Dlr: North ♠ A Q J 10 9 8 3 2 Vul: N-S ♥ 10 9 2 ♦ 6 ♣ 9 3 ♠ 9 5 ♠ 6 4 ♥ A 3 ♥ K Q 6 4 ♦ A 10 8 5 3 ♦ J 9 2 ♣ Q 8 6 5 ♣ K J 7 2 ♠ K 7 ♥ J 8 7 5 ♦ K Q 7 4 ♣ A 10 4

East led the ♥K: 5, 3, 10. Using upside-down count, when East leads a heart to West’s ace, declarer playing the 9, there is some ambiguity. But third- and-fifth leads come to the rescue!

West shifts to the ♣6: 3, jack, ace. West then takes the ♦K with the ace and continues with the ♣5. East can win and be sure West doesn’t have only two clubs because North has shown seven spades, two hearts, two clubs and one diamond. The club count lets East cash the ♥Q with confidence.

Playing in an NABC+ pairs game? Buy your entry early!

In an effort to speed up the start of all NABC+ pairs events – which requires additional time for proper seeding – the ACBL asks participants to please buy their entries at least 15 minutes before game time. This is especially true if you expect to be a seeded pair.

Toronto-area players Max Cheng, Darwin Li, Cindy He and Jasmine Xiong are playing in Atlanta in preparation for the upcoming World Youth Team Championships in China.

Toronto youth players ain’t scared

Toronto-area bridge is alive and well, not only in its tournament and club scene, but also in its youth programs.

According to District 2 Director Paul Janicki, the spike in youth participation is having an unintended consequence: parents of youth players are learning the game.

“It’s the opposite of the usual pattern where parents or grandparents teach the game to their children or grandchildren,” he said.

A Toronto-based youth foursome came to the Summer NABC to represent District 2 in Flight C of the Grand National Teams. Max Cheng, 14, Darwin Li, 11, Cindy He, 15, and Jasmine Xiong. 15, made the trip to Atlanta. The quartet was eliminated early in the contest, but they were unfazed. They had no time to be disappointed because they were gearing up for their next event: the Spingold Knockout Teams. Not the Mini-Spingold, mind you. The NABC+ event with all the world champions. That Spingold.

This is the second NABC the squad has attended, the first being last year’s Summer NABC in their home town.

Several years ago, the players met through bridge classes in the Toronto area, including a beginner’s class taught by Michael Yang. Later, they each took some online classes from various Toronto-area luminaries such as Daniel Lavee and Danny Miles.

The older members of the group – Cindy and Jasmine – have been playing a bit longer, and they were part of the Canadian delegation that attended the World Youth championships in Salsomaggiore, Italy, in 2016.

This year, teammate Max will join the older girls as they travel to the World Youth Team Championships in Wujiang, China. The tournament starts Aug. 8.

Cheng and He will represent Canada in the Under 16 category, while Xiong will play on the Under 21 team.

Mea culpa, mea maxima culpa

By Barry RigalSometimes your bad plays don’t cost. I’ll tell

you what happened on this deal. You can assign the blame. Dlr: West ♠ K 7 Vul: None ♥ K J 10 4 ♦ 9 8 6 5 ♣ A 4 2 ♠ Q 9 8 6 ♠ A 5 4 ♥ 9 8 3 ♥ 6 5 2 ♦ K 7 2 ♦ A 10 4 ♣ Q 10 9 ♣ J 6 5 3 ♠ J 10 3 2 ♥ A Q 7 ♦ Q J 3 ♣ K 8 7 West North East South 1NT (1) Pass 2♣ Pass 2♥ Pass 2NT Pass 3NT All Pass

1. 10-12East’s low club lead to the queen was ducked.

North won the ♣A at trick two and led a diamond to the jack and king. West cleared clubs, East got in with the ♦A and cashed his club, then carefully declined to take the ♠A.

North had been squeezed out of a winner, so East exited passively and declarer guessed spades for down one. So who goofed?

Answer (not entirely unexpectedly): yours truly, sitting West. Imagine that the ♠A and ♠K are switched. Declarer would have nine tricks!

But when North plays a diamond at trick two, it is dollars to doughnuts that his shape is 2=4=4=3. West must win the ♦K and shift to the ♠9. If the top spades are indeed switched, North must duck. East wins the ♠K and reverts to clubs for down one.

Wernher Open Pairs begins today

2017 Wernher Open Pairs winners Joel Wooldridge and John Hurd.

The Wernher Open Pairs – formerly the National Men’s Pairs (1934–1991) and Open Pairs II (1992–2002) – is a four-session event consisting of two qualifying sessions and two final sessions.

The event was contested at the Summer NABC until 1962. It moved to the Spring NABC in 1963 where it remained for 40 years. In 2004, the Wernher Open Pairs returned to the Summer NABC lineup.

The trophy was donated in 1934 by Sir Derrick J. Wernher. Wernher (1889–1947) was a resident of London, England and Deal NJ. A leading personality in American bridge in the ’30s, Wernher was president of the American Bridge League in 1933, chairman of its Master Plan committee and a member of the board of directors of the American Whist League.

Wernher placed second in the Asbury Challenge Teams (now the Spingold Knockout Teams) in 1936 and won the Reisinger (played in conjunction with the New York regional) in 1930.Winners:National Men’s Pairs1934 David Burnstine, Oswald Jacoby1935 Edward Cook, Fred French1936 Richard Ecker, Fred Kaplan1937 Edward Cook, John Kunkle1938 B. guide in hand, he jumped onto Bridge Base Online.“Many Turkish experts hurled Turkish profanity

at me on BBO as I confidently bid with just the pamphlet at my side and without a clue as to what I was doing. I began to catch on by seeing what generated the least profanities.”

After nine months online, Reese discovered the Louisiana Bridge Association. He kibitzed John Onstott the first time he went to the bridge center. “One of the few things that I remember about that day was Onstott heatedly debating with his partner about whether a 4♦ bid was a splinter or not. I remember telling my father later that not only did I not have a clue what a splinter bid was, but I probably would never know. Little did I know I would be using splinter bids a few years later at a Youth NABC!”

Reece found that everyone at the club had advice for him.

“As my one hundred new grandmas welcomed me, I loved them back. I began to appreciate their enthusiasm, intelligence, competitiveness, humor and patience. I honestly think that I enjoy the lessons, stories and social skills they’ve taught me more than any masterpoints.”

Reese sees how bridge has contributed to every aspect of his life. He believes that he learned to carry himself with confidence in interviews and received an offer of admission from his top-choice college: He enrolls at Yale University in the fall, where he plans to study statistics and data science, “which bridge furthered and improved.”

He says, “I’ve learned to struggle through adversity and I have gained knowledge and perspective, but the true reason I love bridge is how I approach life like a bridge player. When life goes tough and the cards don’t split in your favor, you have to adapt and try another line of play.”

Koppel is taking and giving back to the game in equal measure. He tells of his work as a bridge counselor and chaperone of three energetic 11-year-olds at the Youth Bridge Camp in Carlinville IL.

Because of Reese’s enthusiasm and lightheartedness, he was hand-picked by a senior counselor to mentor one homesick boy named Caleb.

Caleb begged Reese to help him earn his first masterpoints. After their game, Caleb eagerly sprinted across the room to Reese to inform him that they had picked up a sliver of a masterpoint, and gave him a big bear hug.

Reese says, “Seven weeks later, at the Youth North American Bridge Championships in Toronto, Caleb and Justin (another one of our bunkmates) excitedly showed me the trophies they won by playing as partners. It was gratifying to see how ecstatic my kids were about their bridge success.”

Reese is an NABC Life Master. He finished second last year in the National Youth Teams at the Youth NABC. He also captained a team which competed in December in the Youth U.S. Bridge Championships, finishing third.

Reese says he practices bidding online with his grandmother, who lives in New York. He also plays with his 98-year-old great-grandfather, who lives in Palm Springs.

“I owe much of the credit for my successes thus far to my fellow members of the Louisiana Bridge Association as well as to the game of bridge as a whole,” Reese says. “And let’s not forget the entire network of friends that bridge has given me though the Youth and Junior events for the ACBL and USBF! I’ve met some of my closest friends through bridge-related activities. And for that, I will be forever thankful and appreciative.”

Heller says the Ed Foundation received a record number of applications this year. “In addition, it was a tight field with many strong contenders.” The annual recognition, which awards $2000 in scholarship funds, recognizes a graduating high school senior for their playing record and overall participation in the bridge community.

Do the right thingBy Barry Rigal

On some deals you do the right thing and it doesn’t work. On others, when you succeed, you are left wondering if you just got lucky. I’m not sure where this one falls. Dlr: North ♠ A K Q 10 Vul: E-W ♥ 5 4 2 ♦ J 7 3 2 ♣ Q 2 ♠ 8 5 2 ♥ A K 6 ♦ K 10 6 5 ♣ 9 7 6 West North East South 1♣ Pass 2NT All Pass

As West, you’d lead the ♥A – wouldn’t you? Partner players the ♥J (you hope from J109x) and it’s up to you. What to do?

At the table, I think you can make a good case for saying you can afford to shift to a diamond. It may cost a trick if partner has the ♦Q and no 9, but if he has ace or three low diamonds, it may not cost. And the big gain comes when he has Q9x or AQ.

At the table, East put in the ♦9 (taken by South with the ace), won the ♣A at the next trick and returned the ♥J. South ducked and the defenders unblocked hearts. West then played the ♦10 (to avoid accidents) and the defense cashed out for two down and 41 out of 42 matchpoints. The full deal: ♠ A K Q 10 ♥ 5 4 2 ♦ J 7 3 2 ♣ Q 2 ♠ 8 5 2 ♠ 7 6 3 ♥ A K 6 ♥ J 10 9 7 ♦ K 10 6 5 ♦ Q 9 4 ♣ 9 7 6 ♣ A 8 4 ♠ J 9 4 ♥ Q 8 3 ♦ A 8 ♣ K J 10 5 3 TUESDAY GOLD RUSH PAIRS

Unless otherwise noted: Three-flight open events are stratified as A/X (6000+/0-6000), B/C (1500-3000/0-1500) and Gold Rush (300-750/0-300).Two-flight open events are stratified as A/B/C (3000+/1500-3000/0-1500) and Gold Rush (500-750/200-500/0-200) or as A/X/Y (6000+/4000-6000/0-4000) and B/C/D (1500-3000/750-1500/0-750) if there is no Gold Rush.One-flight open events are stratified as A (3000+), B (750-3000) and C (0-750).Stratification is based on averaging the masterpoints of a pair or team. Eligibility for limited events will be based on the point holding of the highest player, so no player with more than 3000 may play in B/C events nor the Bracketed B Teams, no player with more than 750 may play in Gold Rush events, and no player with more than 300 may play in 299er events.BOLD, UPPER CASE = NABC+ events. UPPER CASE = NABC events. *Members whose dues payment is current and Life Masters whose service fee payment is current.

**International FundIn NABC+ events, $1.50 (per person, per session) of each entry fee will be allocated to the ACBL International Fund. These funds are used to underwrite part of the expenses of ACBL players who participate in international competition.

Electronic device policy The electronic device policy

at NABCs allows players to bring electronic devices such as cell phones into the playing area provided that such devices are turned off. Further, any such equipment must not be visible during the session.

A violation of the policy will result in an automatic disciplinary penalty of one full board (or 12 IMPs at that form of scoring) for the first offense. A second offense will result in disqualification from the event

Convention card reminderEach player is required to have a convention

card filled out legibly and on the table throughout a session. The convention card must include the first and last name of each member of the partnership, and the cards must be identical.

If a director determines that neither player has a substantially completed card, the partnership may play only the Standard American Yellow Card and may use only standard carding. This restriction may be lifted only at the beginning of a subsequent round after convention cards have been properly prepared and approved by the director. Further, the partnership will receive a 1/6-board matchpoint

penalty for each board played, commencing with the next round and continuing until the restriction is lifted. In IMP team games, penalties shall be at the discretion of the director.

If the director determines the partnership has at least one substantially completed convention card but has not fully complied with ACBL regulations, the director may give warnings or assign such penalties as he deems to be appropriate under the circumstances.

The objective of these warnings and penalties is the encouragement of full compliance with ACBL regulations.

J. Richard Burton Memorial Daylight A/X and B/C Open Pairs

Sponsored by Beatrice KempJ. Richard Burton

was born in Halifax NC. He learned to play bridge while studying engineering at North Carolina State University. He fell deeply in love with the game from the beginning.

In the late 1970s, he became a professional bridge player and developed his own bidding system, which was playfully called “RABBIT.” He won many regional events playing the system with regular partners Jerry Helms and Harold Triplett. The RABBIT system required opening all hands of 10 HCPs, frequent use of canapé and a weak NT in first or second seat. Richard moved to Atlanta in 1983.

Many of his 170 regional wins took place in the days when there was only one regionally rated event on a particular day. In 2010, Richard and his partner, Beatrice Kemp, were first overall in the Wernher Open Pairs in New Orleans. While he was never involved in bridge governance, he served

many times as a volunteer speaker and instructor at regionals. He loved to speak about bridge, particularly on the subject of squeeze play. Several hands played by Richard have been published in the New York Times bridge column.

In 2015, Richard was inducted to the Duplicate Bridge Association of Atlanta Hall of Fame. He was honored not only for his bridge accomplishments but also for the way he distinguished himself at the table by always exhibiting calmness, good etiquette and fairness. He could destroy his opponents with his brilliant declarer play, and at the same time create a friendly atmosphere by offering funny bridge anecdotes from his past experiences.

Richard fought cancer for many years. Upon hearing that he was being considered for the HOF award, he felt inspired to play in a local club game. Although it was a struggle for him to get there and be at the table for 3.5 hours, he made the effort and he and his partner had a 67% game. In his weakened condition, it would be understandable to have less than a stellar game, but Richard’s talent for the game was not diminished by his deteriorating health.

J. Richard Burton, 1946-2016. In loving memory.

This remembrance was originally scheduled to appear in Tuesday’s edition. The editors regret the oversight.

Tarheel / Louise King Memorial Daylight Gold Rush Pairs

Sponsored by North State, Unit 119Louise King,

a 2015 District 7 Goodwill inductee, ran the Vanderbilt Bridge Club in Raleigh NC for many years. She maximized the number of special games in an ongoing effort to help “her” players reach their masterpoint goals. Louise labeled her club “the friendly game,” and she made sure it was. Widowed at 40, she raised and educated her two children prior to becoming involved in the Raleigh bridge community. She succumbed to brain cancer at age 72 on Sept. 3, 2017, surrounded by her children and grandchildren.
