INTO MISCHIEF COLT TOPS OBS OPENERBy Ron Mitchell
Spendthrift Farm owner B. Wayne Hughes showed
faith in his farm's stallion Into Mischief, paying the
highest price of $335,000 during the first session of the
Ocala Breeders’ Sale Co.’s April sale for one of his sons.
Compared with 2015, session one of the four day
sale saw across-the-board increases in gross, aver-
age, and median prices, with fewer sold.
OBS reported the 154 sold grossed $11,180,500,
up 8% over the $10,351,200 for 181 sold in 2015.
This year’s first session average rose 27% to $72,601
from $57,189, and the median, 18% to $47,000 from
$40,000. The buy-back rate was 28%.
Eleven horses sold for more than $200,000 during
the April 19 session, compared with four during last
year’s comparable session.
“It was a good day, and while we’re certainly glad
to be up during this first session. We take it in stride,
realizing we have three more days,” said sales direc-
tor Tod Wojciechowski.

The Into Mischief colt was one of two Spendthrift
Farm acquired Tuesday.
“Into Mischief stamps them very well, and he was
what you would be looking for in an Into Mischief,”
Spendthrift manager Ned Toffey said of the stallion,
which stands for $45,000.
Bridlewood Farm purchased the colt for $100,000
at last year’s Keeneland September yearling sale
and consigned him as Hip 289. Bred in Kentucky by
Richard and Connie Snyder out of grade III-placed
Summer Song—a half sister to grade I winner Don't
Tell Sophia—the colt breezed an eighth in :10 during
the under tack workouts.
Sharing the session’s second-highest price of
$310,000 were a Midnight Lute colt and a Shackle-
ford filly.
Ruis Racing purchased the Midnight Lute colt
consigned by Randy Miles. The Kentucky-bred, whose
second dam, Annasan, is the dam of Canadian Horse of
the Year A Bit O’Gold, was purchased for $28,000 at the
2015 Keeneland September yearling sale.
Narvick International bought the Shackleford filly,
Hip 128, from the SGV Thoroughbreds consignment.
She was bred in New York by Kaz Hill Farm and is out
of the winning Vindication mare Royal Affection, a
half sister to grade III winner Tiger Ride and to stakes
winner Ol Donyo. BH

MAYBERRY FARM STEEPED IN TRADITIONBy Ron Mitchell
Each time a Mayberry Farm 2-year-old goes into the
sale ring, it furthers one of North American Thor-
oughbred racing's richest family traditions.
Based in Ocala, Fla., Mayberry is the operation of
three accomplished horsewomen, led by April May-
berry. Her sister Summer and mother, Jeanne, are
also actively involved. Jeanne is the widow of late Cal-
ifornia-based trainer Brian Mayberry, whose grandfa-
ther, John Pierpont Mayberry, trained Judge Himes to
win the 1903 Kentucky Derby.
Jeanne Mayberry's father, Sam Saunderson, was
also a trainer.
April and Summer were successful trainers in
Southern California, and following Brian May-
berry's death at age 60 in 1998, Jeanne took
over training his stable.
In 2000, April and Jeanne relocated to
Ocala with Summer following later, and the
horsewomen have established themselves
with a flourishing pinhooking business.
"They know they can come here and buy a
horse they can go on to the races with," said
April.
Three of their 18-head consignment to
the Ocala Breeders' Sales. Co's April sale
displayed their race-worthiness, working an
eighth of a mile in :10 during the under tack
show.
Hip 857, is a colt from Gemologist's first
crop from the family of Artie Schiller. Hip 410
is a Spring At Last colt whose second dam is
multiple grade I-placed Spring Meadow, The
third is Hip 580, an Any Given Saturday half
brother to stakes-placed Majestic Slew.
Considering her father's success with
2-year-olds on the track, April said she
thought pinhooking would be easier than it
turned out to be.
"I thought this would be a pretty easy
transition," April said. "Building your clientele
and knowing what people want from a 2-year-old
sale were the biggest things. To re-sell a 2-year-
old, there are so many boxes you need to check.
Everything has to be perfect."
April and Summer each have clientele they bring
to the operation, and all three Mayberrys make deci-
sions together.
"It works out well, and, for the most part, we're on
the same page," she said, noting mother Jeanne plays
a role when disputes arise.
The Mayberrys utilize the Hartley/DeRenzo Thor-
oughbreds training facility and have broken more
than 100 yearlings over the last year.
Jeanne has a 13-acre farm near Ocala where she
takes care of retirees, including 24-year-old High
Stakes Player, who earned $845,629.
The Mayberrys are already prepping a fifth genera-
tion of horsemen. Summer bought a $4,000 yearling for
her two young sons and pinhooked it for $12,000. BH

PIPPEN LIKES HORSES, BUT NOT BUYINGBy Ron Mitchell
There was star power in the house at the Ocala
Breeders’ Sales Co.’s April 19 opening session.
Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer Scot-
tie Pippen spent the afternoon in the sales compa-
ny’s popular Tiki Hut bar.
Brought to the sale by horse owner Sam Her-
zberg—whose Black Onyx won the 2013 Spiral Stakes
(gr. III) and was Kentucky Derby (gr. I)-bound before
being scratched—Pippen was content to hang out
with the guys rather than go into the sale pavilion
and open his pocketbook.
Pippen, who played on the dominating Chicago
Bulls teams that included Michael Jordan, was named
to the all-NBA First Team three times and was a sev-
en-time NBA All-Star.
“I am just hanging out; I don’t have any plans to
invest in (the horses),” Pippen said.
Pippen said he has Quarter Horses on his Ham-
burg, Ark., property and has done trail riding before.
“It wasn’t my thing,” he said.
Pippen said his knowledge of horse racing mainly
consists of visits to the Kentucky Derby, which he
labeled the best event of its kind that he’s attended.
“It’s a great party all day, every day." BH

One of the most popular first-crop sires at the

progeny hit the racetrack April 20.
Lady Stardust, by 2012 Belmont (gr. I) winner
Union Rags (Dixie Union) contests a $100,000 maid-

Winner of the Cigar Mile and the Woodward
Stakes (both gr. I), To Honor and Serve is by Ber-
nardini out of the Deputy Minister mare Pilfer. He
stands at Gainesway for $15,000.

Association Fall mixed sale later that year. He is one
of 97 juveniles from the first crop of To Honor and
Serve.

TEPIN, MISS TEMPLE CITY EARN TOP FIGURESBy Frank Angst
Two top turf females being considered for June starts
at Royal Ascot, Tepin and Miss Temple City, delivered
dazzling performances this past week at Keeneland.
Tepin earned the week's top Equibase Speed Figure
with a five-length Jenny Wiley (gr. IT) victory April 16.
The 5-year-old Bernstein mare set a stakes record,
completing the 1 1/16-mile race in 1:40.53 on firm turf.
The effort earned the champion grass mare a 125
ESF, matching her career-best from last year's Breed-
ers' Cup Mile (gr. IT) win over the same Keeneland
course.
Miss Temple City's connections opted
to avoid Tepin and start in the Maker's
46 Mile (gr. IT) against males. That move
paid off as the 4-year-old Temple City
filly scored a clear victory and earned a
career-best 123 ESF.
Tepin's connections are planning a start
in the June 14 Queen Anne Stakes (Eng-I)
with a prep likely coming in the May 7
Churchill Distaff Turf Mile Stakes (gr. IIT).
Trainer Graham Motion is considering the
June 15 Duke of Cambridge Stakes (Eng-II)
for Miss Temple City. BH
CANTERBURY ANNOUNCES MAJOR TAKEOUT CUTBy Tom LaMarra
In a move that figures to be closely watched by the
horseracing industry, Canterbury Park announced
April 19 a substantial across-the-board pari-mutuel
takeout reduction for its 2016 meet.
The takeout cut has already generated positive
feedback from the Horseplayers Association of North
America and from bettors who publicly discuss the
need for lower takeout rates for U.S. racing. How
other tracks in the country with higher rates react
remains to be seen.
The Minnesota track's 15% takeout on win, place,
and show bets will be the lowest in the United States
and second-lowest in North America behind Wood-
bine. Takeout for all other wagers will be 18%, down
from 23% last year.
The rate for exactas, trifectas, and superfectas will be
the lowest in North America, according to HANA statistics.
"By changing our takeout to the lowest in the Unit-
ed States, we're giving horseplayers worldwide great
value and drawing attention to what is sure to be the
finest racing season in Minnesota history," Canterbury
vice president of racing operations Eric Halstrom said.
The 69-day Canterbury meet opens May 20 and
ends Sept. 17. BH

er track April 18, pleasing Pat Keating, an assistant
trainer to Aidan O'Brien who is supervising the colt's
second Hong Kong campaign.
Highland Reel won the 2015 Hong Kong Vase (HK-
I) from Breeders' Cup Turf (gr. I) runner-up Flintshire
last December after finishing third in the Cox Plate
(Aus-I) in Australia in October. He won the Aug. 15
Secretariat by 5 1/4 lengths.
Highland Reel's past two runs have been at about
1 1/2 miles, but the cut back to about 1 1/4 miles
Sunday is no issue, Keating said.
"He's a versatile galloper and the trip's no prob-
lem." Ryan Moore has the mount.
Probable starters include last year's QE II Cup
winner Blazing Speed and group/grade I winners De-
signs On Rome, Ertijaal, Lovely Day, Nuovo Record,
and Rising Romance, as well as group/grade winners
Satono Crown and Dariyan. BH
PA PURSES SOLID DESPITE REVENUE DROPBy Tom LaMarra
The amount of revenue deposited into the Penn-
sylvania Race Horse Development Fund declined
11.1% over a five-year period, but purse accounts at
six tracks in the state still earned $228.3 million in
2015.
The numbers are part of the annual Pennsylvania
Gaming Control Board benchmark report on gam-
ing at three Thoroughbred and three Standardbred
tracks. Of the total purses earned, $204.1 million
(89.6%) was derived from a percentage of gross slot
machine revenue and $24.1 million (10.4%) came
from pari-mutuel handle.
On-track wagering on live races in Pennsylvania
last year totaled $30.6 million, down from $38.2 mil-
lion five years ago, according to the report. Handle at
the state's diminishing number of off-track wagering
facilities totaled only $8.4 million last year, down
from $15 million in 2011.
All-sources handle on Pennsylvania races of both
breeds was $722 million last year, down from a high
of $807.5 million in 2013 but higher than the $690.3
million recorded in 2011.
The report said that average gross slots revenue
was up on live racing days in 2015, but it noted the
statistics don't take into account peak times for casi-
no gambling. BH

CREATOR SHOULD HAVE DERBY STAMINA
Six furlongs into the Arkansas Derby (gr. I)
WinStar Farm's Gettysburg led from the
odds-on favorite, Tapit's son Cupid. That state of
affairs proved short-lived as the fierce pace took
its toll, and the duo faded from the firing line.
However, WinStar and Tapit still emerged
victorious. As Gettysburg and Cupid retreated,
Creator—a WinStar-owned son of Tapit who had
been more than 15 lengths off the lead after
the opening quarter—was making relentless
progress. Hitting the front halfway through the
stretch, Creator powered clear by 1 1/4 lengths.
Conceivably Tapit will have three Kentucky
Derby (gr. I) starters: one-time favorite Mo-
haymen; UAE Derby (UAE-II) winner Lani; and
Creator. Of these, both Lani and Creator took
their final preps in last-to-first fashion, and both
seem likely to relish the extra Derby distance.
With that in mind—and with the ever-dimin-
ishing numbers of top-class U.S.-bred dirt colts
truly suited to 1 1/4 miles or more—it's interest-
ing that both Lani and Creator were produced
from mares born outside of the U.S., and from
regions that place a higher value on stamina.
Lani's dam, Japan-born Heavenly Romance, is
by Sunday Silence out of an Irish-bred daughter
of Sadler's Wells. Creator is out of the Peruvian
mare Morena.
Champion at 2, 3, and 4 in her native country,
Morena won black-type races from six furlongs
up to the 1 1/2 miles of the Clasico Hipodromo
de Monterrico (Per-II). Sent to the U.S., Morena
failed to win in eight starts—all in graded stakes—
spread over two seasons, but she did hit the
board in five of them, including a second in the
Falls City (gr. II) and two renewals of the Obeah (gr.
III), and a third in the Personal Ensign Stakes (gr. I).
Morena's sire Privately Held is a son of Pri-
vate Account. A brother to Chimes of Freedom—
European champion at 2 and 3, group I winner
at six furlongs and a mile, and dam of several
high-class winners, including champion sprinter
Aldebaran—Privately Held was a different type
of runner than his sister, his only black-type a
third in the 1 3/8-mile Meadowlands Endurance
Stakes. Creator's second dam, Charytin, a Peru-
vian Broodmare of the Year, is by Belmont (gr.
I) winner Summing. The family traces to a half
sister to 1927 Travers Stakes captor Brown Bud,
subsequently sire of Secretariat's third dam.
Creator and Trappe Shot are graded stakes win-
ners sired by Tapit from just five starters out of Pri-
vate Account mares. The pedigree also has some-
thing in common with that of California Chrome,
who is also by a son of Pulpit out of a mare inbred
to Private Account's dam, Numbered Account. BH

2016 SIRES BY LIFETIME AEIListed below are the top 10 leading sires by lifetime Average Earnings Index (AEI) through April 11, 2016. Only active stallions in North America (excluding stallions that were exported prior to the 2011 breeding season) with at least 150 named foals of racing age are included. All statistics are Northern Hemisphere only. AEI indicates how much purse money the progeny of one sire has earned in relation to the average earnings of all runners in the same years; average earnings of all runners in any year is represented by an index of 1.00. CI indicates the average earnings of progeny produced from mares bred to one sire, when these same mares were bred to other sires.
Listed below is a comparison of statistics for only North American racing with all available statistics through April 11, 2016. Only stallions that stand, will stand, or stood in North America (excluding stallions that died or were exported prior to the 2011 breeding season), and have runners in North America are included..
