Wednesday 1st August 2012 Issue 11 Galen Catholic College Newsletter On Friday 20th July Galen Catholic College hosted the Years 5-10 annual CREW Liturgy. The theme this year was ‘Keepers of the Light’, with a focus upon the life, service, and celebration of the 50 years of priesthood for Monsignor John White. Monsignor White has had a fascinating life answering God’s call in both Australia and overseas. As he was interviewed by Matthew Spence and Bekki Hoppach during the liturgy, it became clear that we were witnessing what wonderful acts of humanity one individual can do when they put their trust in God and try to make a real difference in the world, just as Jesus did thousands of years ago. Congratulations Monsignor and thank you for all you have done for the Wangaratta Catholic community over the last fourteen years. The other important reflection that was clear is what a wonderful sight it is to look upon our Catholic community when we gather together as a commu- nity, across our four schools. Community sits at the heart of being Catholic. Jesus Christ encouraged the people of His time to be at one with each other, to celebrate the communion that happens when we are together. This happened on Friday. We would like to thank the three Primary School Religion Coordinators, Mrs Cathie Walsh, Mr Mark Walsh and Miss Anna Tonini, for all their work in helping create the liturgy. It allowed for the liturgy to run smoothly and the valuable contributions by Primary school students were very much appreciated. Here at Galen it was a team effort. The Senior Band, The Junior Choir, staff who set up the stadium, students who contributed to the liturgy and the invaluable staff ‘behind the scenes’ are a great example of how we value community and worshipping our faith here at Galen. From the PrincipalDear Parents and Guardians,

Here we are half way through the year and already we are planning our major arrangements for next year!

Last week we had the VCE 2013 Information Night, which I unfortunately missed due to ill health. Students moving into Years 11 & 12 next year now have the neces-sary information to make informed decisions about the subjects they wish to study. Importantly, they also know whom to approach if they require further assistance.

Next week it will be the turn of those heading into Year 10 in 2013 to hear about the subject offerings and the process for subject selections. This Information Night will be held in the Auditorium on Wednesday evening.

CREW Liturgy & Monsignor White’s Golden JubileeOn the Friday of the first week of term, our Year 7 – 10 students and staff celebrated the annual CREW Liturgy along with Grade 5 & 6 students from St Patrick’s, St Bernard’s and Our Lady’s, and representative staff and students from Borinya Community Partnership.

The major focus of this year’s liturgy was the celebration of Monsignor John White’s Golden Jubilee – 50 years of service as a Catholic priest. We heard inspiring stories of Monsignor White’s time as parish priest in several parishes in the diocese of Sandhurst, as well as his many years as the most senior chaplain for the RAAF. Two Galen students, Matthew Spence and Bekki Hopach, did a terrific job of interviewing Monsignor White as part of the liturgy, eliciting many interesting stories and reflections.

After the liturgy, the Galen Band entertained the primary school students with an excellent concert that held the younger students enthralled. After the concert, the Galen SRC hosted a barbeque lunch for the visitors.

Hot on the heels of this event at school, the Wangaratta parishes hosted their own celebration for Monsignor White on Saturday evening. Once again, Galen students and staff were to the fore. Our senior Hospitality students, under the tutelage of Mrs Marlene Kittell, prepared the main course of four different types of soup for the 400 guests. Sean Greaves, Jenna Larkings, Sarah Iwanuch, Laura Thiele, Emma Grant, Zoe Levesque, Bec King, Tom King, Daniel Nolan and Bridget Feehan followed up on the night as waiters and waitresses, and SRC Captains, Mary Paino and Nathan Whinray were flag bearers for the formal part of the ceremony. Mr Franco Cudini was in his element serving cappuccinos and café lattes all evening.

New classrooms Over the holidays, the old 8.1 and 8.2 portable classrooms were dismantled and removed to make way for the imminent Trade Training Centre Hospitality centre. To replace these older buildings, we have brought in two new portable classrooms and located them near the existing classrooms at the eastern end of our buildings.

Students in 8.1 and 8.2 have moved into their new rooms, complete with verandah, new concreted surrounds and ramp access. I would like to thank the students and teachers of 8.1 and 8.2 for their patience over the first week and a half of term as the rooms were made ready for occupation. Thanks also to Business Manager, Mr Dom Giannone, and Deputy Principal – Staff and Students, Mr Geoff Welch, for their work in getting things ready and making alternative rooming plans while the finishing touches were put onto the new rooms.

Meanwhile, tenders have closed for the building contract for the new Hospitality centre. We expect to have an announcement soon on the successful tenderer and the starting date for construction.

Student Exchange

Hi, I’m Lucia and I come from Italy. I live in a small city in the north, near Turin, called Saluzzo. The city has 17,000 people. My school is ‘Liceo Socio Pedagogico’ and we study lots of humanities subjects like Psychology and Philosophy, and we also have to study science subjects like Maths, Chemistry and Biology too. I like my school but I think that we study too much! We have 13 subjects and there is always lots of homework to do! I have come here for three months to learn English, to meet new people and to see how people live on the other side of the world. The first days weren’t too easy. I was in a new city with new people and I was pretty nervous. But my new host family made me feel at home immediately. The Australian school is very different from the Italian one: you can choose the subjects every year, you have school lockers (Italian exchange students love them!), you have to wear the uniform, your school is modern, you have a good relationship with your teachers (who are really nice), each of you has a Macbook and you don’t have to go to school on Saturday! Also, Australian people are really different from Italians: you are more quiet and you have different habits. For me sometimes it’s a little hard to understand you because we have a different mentality and we think in other ways on some occasions! But this is the most interesting thing that can happen to you when you travel and I really love traveling! I would recommend that everyone have an experience like mine because it can help you to open your mind and to understand that not everyone in the world thinks the same way.

Indonesian DanceIndonesian dance workshops are running each fortnight

on Friday’s (Day 5) during lunchtime. Make sure you come along if you’d like to learn. All welcome!

Engineers Without BordersOn the last day of Term 2, Year 8 students had the opportunity to be involved in an Engineers Without Borders program. Students involved in the workshop were thoroughly engaged. Thomas McDonald -Yr 8 describes his experience.

The Engineers Without Borders activity was lots of fun. During the activity we learnt about engineers, water problems in our world and how aid agencies help people who have to filter their water. There was 6 groups, each group had a different country. Money was given to the groups according to the wealth of the country they had. We also got a set of instructions that had a certain amount of words in English and a certain amount in foreign symbols. This was worked out based on the literacy rate of your country. We then got a bottle that was cut in half and had to buy things to put into the bottle. My group had Ethiopia and we were allowed to get donations from other countries. The Australian group gave us a lot of money. We could buy cotton buds, elastic bands, cloth, sands, gravel, activated charcoal (a very porous charcoal that absorbed dirt from the water) and bark chips. Some of it costed lots and some not much at all. The activated charcoal was the most expensive. My group won so we got Engineers Without Borders T-shirts and our photo taken in the Chronicle. The people from EWB said that all of the groups water filters worked really well. They also said that the Ethiopian group had the cleanest water sample they had seen. Aidan Howard (Year 8) also added that, ‘It was great to learn about the different water situations for other countries and how we could make a difference.’

Junior School NewsLauren Lee - Junior School Director

Students in the Junior school came back to a big hole where 8/1 and 8/2 used to be. For the first week and a bit the students from these homerooms were left homeless. They finally managed to get the approval to move in on Tuesday and have two great new rooms to call home for the rest of the year. Last week Year 7 students started their retreat days to 15 mile creek. I was lucky enough to spend the day with two of the homerooms that experienced these days and it was a real pleasure to watch the team work, care and friendship these students had with each other. All of the classes completed an RE activity which encouraged them to identify the things that they liked and respected about their peers. The groups also pushed themselves and encouraged each other to have a go at the flying fox and climb the rock climbing wall. It was amazing to see so many of the students trusting each other enough to climb the wall blind folded with only their peers to guide them up the wall. On Wednesday Year 8 students competed in the Readers cup inter homeroom challenge. A lot of hard work was put in by all of the home-rooms and we thank Mrs Rachel Froude for her efforts in guiding the students through this challenge. We would also like to thank the special guest judges for the day who decided 8/3 were the overall winners.

Stronger RallyThe next Stronger Rally will be held in Bendigo on Friday, August 17, from 6-9pm. The night will include praise and worship music, a testimony by a young person, games,

and small group discussions. A barbecue dinner will also be provided. Soft drinks will be available for a gold coin donation. The Rally caters for secondary school students and young adults, and will be held at the Marian Centre, Catholic College Bendigo, Barkly Street. For details, visit

Wind back to February. 22,000 students in South Africa sit a test, and the top 100 students are notified to come together for a week held annually in Pretoria. Fast forward to June, and somehow I’m hopping on a plane with 7 other Australians to join them. Over the last school holidays I’ve had an awesome experience, where I spent three weeks touring through Southern Africa as part of an international program run through the National Youth Science Forum, a program Chris Traill, Michael Naughtin and I attended in January.

The main focus of our trip was to attend the ‘National Science Olympiad Focus Week’ (NSOFW), which is a 5-day program run in conjunction with major universities and industry sponsors. One of the highlights of the week for me was a trip to a major local gold mine, where we were jettisoned 4 kilometres underground into the working section of a large vein. I’ve always had an interest in mining, and seeing the mine in action was a real privilege. I also saw a car assembled in front of me at a Nissan factory and used the telescope at the Johannesburg observatory to view Saturn. We shared some sweet moments with the South Africans, and I’m proud to say I’ve represented Australia in a game of soccer!

The trip wasn’t without its challenges though! Initially we spent some major time around Cape Town with an archaeologist, and after the NSOFW week we went on a safari up though South Africa, Botswana and Zambia. One night we watched the sunset (which, I might add is unlike anything back home) on a cruise down the Zambezi River. We finished the trip at the magnificent Victoria Falls, one of the natural wonders of the world.

I’ve returned home and settled back in, but I find myself frequently drifting back to the heat of the Kalahari or the salty air at Cape Town. A huge thankyou to everybody who attended the trivia night or helped us in other ways, as well as Linda O’Donohue and Brian and Leanne Carr for their support for Michael and I. I wish Michael all the best for his trip in December and the Galen students going through the NYSF next year. I hope you can experience the same wonders I have in 2013!

Both Fletcher and Michael are still looking to raise funds to cover the cost of their trips. Any donations would be much appreciated.

Senior School NewsMick Grogan - Senior School Director

Written by Allison Taylor - Year 12

On the July school holidays I attended the 10th National Leadership Camp at Collaroy Beach, Sydney. I spent four days with 198 other senior school students from across Australia, including a delegate from New Zealand. It was such a powerful experience! The main aims of this camp, ran by Rising Generations, is to motivate youth and give them the skills required to be a good leader. The 2012 theme was ‘Awaken’, and I think I have been! I have met so many inspiring people and the skills I have learnt will be invaluable as I progress to university in 2013. We had inspirational speakers such as Robyn Moore (voice over for Blinky Bill) and Sam Cawthorn (who was resilient enough to bounce back after he lost his arm and leg in an accident).

Each day was themed with one of four themes including; vision, values, resilience and service. It was an incredible camp and I encourage other youth to consider attending next year.

One thing I have learnt from the camp is that nothing is impossible, and if you don’t act you risk missing out. Initially, I was put off by the cost of the camp as it was $475 plus the individual costs of getting to Sydney but I sent out letters for sponsorship hoping this cost would be reduced. I was fortunate enough to be sponsored the full amount from Wangaratta Lions Club, with transport and additional costs being covered by the Appin Park Rotary Club.

The generosity of these local organisations is overwhelming and they love hearing about what we are getting up to even if they are unable to give assistance. If anyone wants to know more, feel free to send me an email or come see me. Always remember “You are Extraooooordinary!!” – Blinky Bill

Living Well with Asthma Advice for Parents and Carers

1 in 10 people in Australia have asthma, and people with asthma often rate their health a lot worse and report a poorer quality of life than the general population. Children and adolescents with current asthma are more likely to miss days of school/preschool due to asthma and a key aspect of improving quality of life is ensuring that your child or teenager is able to engage fully in physical activity and social aspects of life and learning.

Asthma symptoms are not a normal aspect of life and should be taken seriously. Children and teenagers with poor asthma control should be encouraged to seek assistance, and should visit their GP or respiratory physician for an asthma review as soon as possible.

For further information, please contact the Asthma Foundation of Victoria on 1800 645 130 or email: [email protected]

Careers News

FOCUS ON OPEN DAYS

Each year in July, August and September, tertiary institutions open their doors to the public to showcase the amazing and unique features they have to offer including courses, scholarships, student services, facilities, accommodation etc. Open days are a real buzz with lots of activities going on including live bands, BBQs, competi-tions, information sessions, art displays and drama performances.

If you are in Years 10 – 12, it is a great opportu-nity to be able to attend Open Days as you will be able to:

• Gain a better understanding about the courses or career areas you are interested in• Compare facilities and services between institutions, which will help you during preference time • Speak directly to a lecturer or current student in the faculty you wish to study with• Find out about scholarships• View on campus accommodation if the institution has these facilities.

Further, attending Open Days will prepare you for courses you may apply for that require you to undertake an interview as part of the selection process.

Open Day Downsides: For students living away from institutions, it can be expensive to travel to and from the event and also pay for overnight accommodation. Some solutions include: calling the institution to see if they will partially fund your travel and even lunch for the day.

The University of Melbourne provides cheap train tickets to students who travel from rural and regional areas and Swinburne University can provide a travel subsidy and free lunch passes. You may also consider carpooling with mates; checking out which other institutions are open on the same day and finding out if your school is taking a bus there.

If you can’t get subsidised travel or carpool with mates/school you could contact your local Rotary or Lion’s Clubs and ask if you could apply for funding. It’s worth a try!

By now you should have identified institutions you would like to visit, found out their Open Day dates and downloaded their Open Day Guides. Once you have the guides, make a list of the information sessions you would like to attend- if you have time, try and attend information sessions on topics like pathways, VTAC, scholarships and overseas exchange programs.

If you are unsure what to ask on the day, Victoria University has listed some questions you can ask:

Getting in• Are there any pre requisite subjects I need to study for this course?• What marks/ ATAR do I need to get into this course?• Do I need to audition, have an interview or present a folio as part of the selection process?• Are there any other ways into this course other than through a VTAC application?• Can I do a TAFE course first which might then

lead into a higher university course?• What is the different between TAFE and University?• If I can’t get into this course, is there a similar one at this institution I can study?

Course Information• What are the core subjects for this course and are there any electives?• How many hours a week are spent in class and can I study part time or after hours?• Are there any special features of this course?• What type of assessment tasks can I expect and what methods of teaching are used?• Can I defer the course?• What kind of jobs do graduates of this course generally get?• Are there any scholarships available?

Senior Girls BadmintonCongratulations to the Year 11 girls who were runners up at the Hume Badminton competition held in Wangaratta on 23rd July. The team of Chiara Benedetti, Breta Alstrom, Gabby Tonini and Bec King won a close match against Tallangata Secondary College in the first round. They then won against Broadford, but unfortunately were unable to get up for the win against eventual winners Cobram Secondary College. Well done to the girls who displayed great skills and sportsmanship on the day, and who represented Galen proudly. Thanks to Paul Benedetti who took the team on the day.

Galen Equestrian TeamVictorian Interschool Championships

Congratulations to Briellen Ramsay and Alannah Grant who competed in cold and windy conditions at the Victorian Interschool Championships recently in Werribee. Bree scored 8th place in her first round of dressage and then placed 2nd place in the second round for an overall placing of 5th in the champion-ship. Alannah’s results were pleasing given the tough competition she faced. Well done to both girls for representing Galen so well and thanks to their parents for taking the girls and their horses to Werribee for the comp.

Basketball News:Carly in Tamsworth

Over the recent school holidays, Year 10 student Carly Perso attended the under 16 Australian National Basketball Champion-ships in Tamworth, where she was a member of the Victoria Country Women’s Team. They started off their week with a win over North Queensland and went on to win 5 out of their 8 games. The Victoria country team played in the bronze medal game against New South Wales Metro where they lost in a close contest. Carly averaged 6 points per game and 8 rebounds. It was a very enjoyable week and Carly looks forward to hopefully play-ing in the under 18’s state team in the next couple of years.

Victorian Schools Cycling Championships

Over the last week of Term Two the Regional heats of the State Cycling Championship competition were held for the Border/North East. The Moutain Bike event was run at Nail Can Hill in Albury on Sunday 24th June. Josh Sullivan Year 7 came second in the Under 15 event representing Galen which was a terrific effort. He will now go on to compete at the Finals at the Dallas Brooks Scout Camp course, Upper Beaconsfield on Sunday 4th August. On Tuesday 26 June the Road event was run at Noreil Park Albury where we were well represented with three riders. Thomas MacDonald, Year 8 won the Under 15 race comfortably with Tomarsh Loki 2nd and Fergus Samon 5th in the Under 17 race. Tomarsh was leading for the whole race and was just beaten on the line by an Albury rider. Thomas and Tomarsh will represent Galen at the final in Belmont on 19th October. We are fortunate to have a few strong riders at Galen and we wish the riders well when they race in their final events. Many thanks to the parents who supervised their sons so that they could compete at these events.

State Cross Country ChampionshipsCongratulations to our State cross country team who competed over a 3km or 5km course in Bundoora, Melbourne, on July 17th. The team of Ned Penny, Tamarah Cham-beyron, Mikhaila Lovett and Dylan Syres all had great runs in windy conditions over a muddy course. In particular, both Ned and Mikhaila performed exceptionally well, with Ned finishing 23rd out of 95 in his age group with Mikhaila finishing 27th.

Year 8 Boys Hume Football CompetitionWell done to the Year 8 boys that played school footy on the 25th of July. All players participated in a very sporting manner and as a team, we played some very good football. After losing a close game to Yarrawonga in the first match, the boys came up against a very physical and skillful Notre Dame team. Galen were no match for them and we went down convincingly. The team was able to regroup in the final game and defeated Euroa. All boys are to be commended for their behaviour on the day. Galen’s best player was Nick Richards, and he was well supported by Zac Elliot and Will Nolan. Thanks to Zac Fulford who took the team on the day.

A report on the Year 7 Football will be included in the next newsletter.

Immersion 2013: Timor LesteOver the past few years we have been working on an international immersion experience for our students focused on our neighbours in the Asia Pacific region with whom we have some connection as a school community. We are now at a stage where we would like to invite students to apply for the 2013 Immersion to Baucau, Timor-Leste. This is planned for April next year and is offered first to students who will be studying Year 11 in 2013.The immersion is a practical response to our call to mission; provides outreach opportu-nities for students and staff; raises aware-ness of justice issues in Timor Leste; works to improve the lives of others; and aims to broaden the general education of Galen

students about the lives of our northern neighbours. We are fortunate that the Marist brothers have an existing program developed with local Timorese for schools who visit on immersion. This is based in Baucau, the second largest city in Timor-Leste where the brothers run a teacher training college. For more information contact Jim Samon or Gerard Sullivan.
