Dear Parents and Guardians,

We are rapidly approaching the end of a very full first semester. One of the great things about Galen is the broad range of opportunities afforded to your children and, as always, it has been vey rewarding to see the way in which they have embraced those opportunities.

Of course, the end of a semester brings with it summaries of work achieved, assessments undertaken and formal reports. As you would be aware from several previous notifications, this year our assessment and reporting is undergoing a significant development in that we are reporting to you on a progressive basis.

By the end of this semester, your child/children will have at least three detailed assessment comments per subject. For those with internet connection at home or work, these assessments can be accessed online via P.A.M. (Parent Access Module). For those without internet access, there has been the option to contact Mr Peter Girolami at the college to request hard copies of these assessments.

This means that the end of semester reports will not include detailed written comments as in the past (because these have been superseded by the progressive assessments), but will still provide the usual progression points, S or N, and in some cases, A-E.

The net result is that you as parents receive far more detailed and immediate assessment information than has been the case in the past. You also have the added advantage of receiving this information online in live time if you have access to the internet.

Dear parents and families, There has been information presented to Year 10s about the Timor Leste Immersion experience for 2014 when these students will be in Year 11. The current plans are to depart in the last week of Term One and return on the middle weekend of the school holidays before Easter. There has also been an information night and students and teachers have spoken to classes about the immersion. This is a wonderful experience for students, who work as team leading up to the immersion and on the trip as we well. It certainly opens students minds to better understanding life in a developing country and the issues that the people in Timor Leste face. The experience also puts our own lives into perspective and helps us to appreciate what we have more. If your son or daughter is interested, the applications close on June 14th which is not far away. Application forms can be collected from the front office, Mr. Samon or from the Galen website. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask Jim Samon, Lyndel Petersen, Carly Bilke or Gerard Sullivan. The Timor Ambassadors from this year’s immersion would also be happy to discuss their experience. - Jim Samon

As part of the Year 7 Science curriculum, students study the classification of organisms and how those organisms interact in ecosystems. To assist students to observe first-hand and under-stand classification and relationships within ecosystems, Year 7 Science classes visited the Kyabram Fauna Park. At the Park students participated in an Education Session run by the Education Officer of the Park where the emphasis was on classifying reptiles. Students were given the opportunity to handle a number of lizards and python. After the classroom session students were able to wander the park observing a wide range of Australian fauna while collecting information for their Classification assignment.

An entertaining 2013 Year 8 Reader’s Cup was held on Wednesday last week with much enjoyment. Each homeroom team chose a book and then created a book trailer that represented the spirit of the book. Many teams used fellow classmates in the productions. These trailers were presented to the junior school during extended homeroom on Wednesday morning to much hilarity. The competition was of a high standard and the judges had great difficulty determining an outright winner. Eventually it was declared a tie between 8/1 and 8/5. The students involved wrapped up the challenge with a pizza lunch in the junior library.

The year 7 students will have their Reader’s Cup Challenge during Term 3. Congratulations to all those involved. - Mrs Froude

It has been very pleasing to see senior students approach their exams conscien-tiously and responsibly. The official exam supervisors commented upon the level of co-operation and consideration displayed by students doing the GAT exam. Teachers supervising Year 11 exams and Unit 3 Practice Exams were also happy with the mature approach exhibited by students. Exams are a significant part of assessment and students can greatly improve their overall standing with a strong exam performance.Second semester subjects commence on Tuesday, 18th June. It is important that all students reflect on their progress so far in 2013 and consider how they might improve in the second semester. It is also an opportunity to renew their work ethic in the classroom and commitment to study beyond the school day. The holidays are approaching and while this is an opportunity to relax and take a break, it is also important for students to include adequate time to keep abreast of their academic work-load.

On the 11th of June the Year 9 Just Vocals class had the opportunity to perform for the residents of Illoura. Just Vocals is a small class that focus purely on singing. Students cover a wide variety of vocal styles and techniques, which they learn to use within a variety of genres. They were able to showcase their skills to a willing and grateful audience who would very much like the group to return later in the year. Congratulations to all those who participated as it has taken months of rehearsals to get to such a high standard.

Upper Hume NetballOn Thursday 30th May, our Year 7-12 girls netball teams took to the courts in wet and rainy conditions at the Barr Reserve to compete in the Upper Hume Competition. There was fierce competition to be selected for the teams this year, with over thirty students trying out for the nine available positions in each team. Thanks to all students who tried out and congratulations to those who were selected:

Year 7 (2 teams): Lily Hales, Finlee North, Zoe Rasmussen, Siobhan McMahon, Morgan Rundell, Lauren Torpey, Isobelle Lackner, Sarah Borbidge, Mackenzie Byrne, Bridie Nixon, Sarah Lyons, Jessie Gerrish, Anna Wallis, Abbey Snowdon, Geogia Allen, Georgia Scott, Olivia Annett, Annie Holmes and Madison O’Keefe.

Year 8 (2 teams): Taylah Reidy, Monique Szelgiewicz, Abby Walker, Emma Collet, Chloe Elliot, Ally Peters, Mikaela Trethowan, Hannah Fitzgerald, Alice Hales, Sarah Maher, Ainslie Bear, Hayley Steegstra, Amelia Walton, Billie Shanley, Amelia Eefting, Bonnie Gillman and Emma Ackerly.

Year 9/10 (2 teams): Brooke Morley, Hannah Byrne, Amy Cook, Bree O’Donohue, Olivia Storer, Montana Eisenhauer, Rhianna Dunne, Alannah Grant, Briony O’Halloran, Renee Collet, Issy Clarke, Georgia Cargill, Ajiah Harris, Jemma Hales, Hayley Trethowan, Sally Horwood and Jess Muller.

Year 11/12 (1 team): Adrienne Murphy, Emma Witham, Alex Cheshire, Alex Shanley, Holly Judd, Tayla Ward, Carly Perso, Demi Bowers and Kaylee Seymour.

The Year 7A team played extremely well all day, drawing with Catholic College Wodonga and beating Wodonga Middle Years College and Victory Lutheran College to make the final against Wangaratta High School. The game ended in a draw before going into time on. It was a very close match but unfortunately the girls couldn’t get across the line and they lost by 2 goals to be runners up on the day.

The Year 7B team lost against Wangaratta High School, but then redeemed themselves by winning against Wodonga Middle Years College. This put them in the playoff for 3rd position, but Catholic College Wodonga were too strong and defeated the Galen team. Sarah Borbidge was Best on Court, however Mrs Fulford, coach of the Year 7 teams, was keen to point out that that their good results for the day were due to the team effort of all of the girls playing well on the day and she was pleased that they represented the school with pride.

The Year 8 teams, in the words of coach Deb Doyle, were outstanding! Team 8A made the final and were one goal up at half time, only to be overcome by Wangaratta High School in the second half. Congratulations to Mikaela Trethowan who was Best on Court. Team 8B won two and lost two matches to come fourth overall. Well done to Abby Walker who was Best on Court.

In the Year 9/10 teams, all players contributed and represented Galen well. The A team only lost 1 game, and the B Team only lost one to the High School and then against the Galen A side. Congratulations to Brooke Morley, Rhianna Dunne, Olivia Storer and Hannah Byrne who were amongst the best players for the A team. In the B team, Renee Collet, Hayley Trethowan and Issy Clarke were Best on Court.

The 11/12 girls also unfortunately didn’t make the final, but all the girls played to a very high standard, with Kaylee Seymour and Demi Bowers being standouts.

Thanks to Jess Clarke, Kylie Fulford, Deb Doyle, Linda O’Donohue, Lauren Parker and Sarah Pitcher who put in a lot of work conducting tryouts, coaching and convening on the day.

Liking school is more important than the grades you get, according to a study that has looked at workers 20 years down the track. The Menzies Research Institute in Tasmania has conducted a Seven Up! style experiment, checking on a group of people first surveyed as school students in 1985.Researchers found being engaged at school was more important for later success than the marks they achieved or their family background. The study has been published in the British Education Research Journal.

Careers News

Year 10 Careers Education ProgramWell done to the majority of year 10 students who experience life in the real world on June 11-14. It was great to see so many young people organize themselves and not depend on mum and dad to make the step of entering the world of work during the work experience week. Stage 2 of the careers education program is the Careers Information Day on Wednesday 17th July. The Careers Advisor Mr Rob Walker will spend the morning help-ing students understand the importance of selecting subjects that give them opportunities in the future. Students will need their computers fully charged on this day and a VTAC pin number which homeroom teachers will assist students with. A letter regarding this event will be emailed on the 18th June. Stage 3 is the Tertiary Trip to Albury & Wodonga on 24th July and that evening in the Galen auditorium the final stage of the program involves the VCE information night. A letter regarding the Tertiary Trip will be emailed on 15th July.

Yr 8 Upper Hume SoccerCongratulations to the year 8 girls team who won all four of their matches in Wodonga on Thursday 6th June in the Upper Hume Soccer Competition. The girls started the day off well by beating Marian College 2-0. They then capitalised on their great performance by thrashing Wodonga Middle Years 4-0 which earned them a spot in the final. In a close match, the girls were victorious by narrowly winning 1-0. Well done to Ellie Hourigan, Bianca Mulqueen and Ainslie Bear who were Best on Ground. The team will now go on to compete in the Hume Soccer Competition in term 3. Thanks to Lauren Lee who selected the team and Shannon Murphy and Chris Parsons who coached them on the day.

The year 8 boys also played in the Upper Hume Competition to finish 3rd in the competition with 1 win, 1 draw and 2 losses. The boys started the day off well with a win over Wodonga Middle Years, 2-1. Unfortunately the boys early good form did not continue, and they went down 2-1 and 3-0 in their next two matches. The final match of the day saw a tight contest with Marian College which ended in a draw of 2-2. Congratulations to Sebasatian Pasquali, Paul Sanderson, Joe Richards and Matt Jordan who were the stand-out players of the day. Thanks to Rob Spencer and Tom Frawley who coached the team on the day.

Upper Hume FootballAfter three trial days and an inter school practice match, the twenty two Year 7 students representing Galen College were selected. The two games were held at the Barr Reserve against Wodonga Middle Years Campus and Wangaratta High School.

The first match against WMYC was a one sided affair. Galen dominated the first half 8-3-51 to 0-0-0. Lead by the dominant midfield Of Harri Smart, Colby McQuade, Hamish McLeod and Will Creed and ably supported in defence by Harry Allan, Jeffrey Holmes, Lachlan Moore and Cam Nolan, the Galen team dominated all parts of the game. The second half saw Galen run out winners 12-8-80 to 1-1-7. Connor Goodison, Zac Lindsey, Nick Stewart, Tom Young and Michael Cooper played a great second half to secure the playoff place.

The second match against Wangaratta High was the grand final. Both teams were on one win and no losses. The match was played with great intensity and spirit. Oliver Willett, Macauley Murtaugh, Declan Joyce-Lawford and Jack Gerrish moved the ball with speed and precision against their taller High School opponent. While Galen dominated the general play, the High School finished off the quarter with consecutive goals to go in to the break leading 2-0-12 to Galen’s 1-3-9. The second half was a battle of wills, fitness and determination. The ball was moving quickly from one end of the field to the other. However neither team could capitalise with a goal.

Galen crept closer through the efforts of Cooper Matheson-Gray, Cade Gorman and Alex Reeves but could not hit the front. Finally with less than 5 minutes left on the clock and players cramping left, right and centre, Rylan Coonan put himself in a position to mark the ball 20 metres out after some sensational lead up play. With five on the mark and the breeze in his face, Rylan calmly slotted the last score of the game to give Galen victory. The final score was Galen 2-4-16 to WHS 2-0-12.

Thanks to the efforts of all the players both on the day and in the tryouts. Also thank you to our Year 9 helpers Harry Condon, Kieran Mair, Isaac Waite and Will Nolan, as well as Paul Carson and Chris Parsons for their coaching on the day.

A call to be in Solidarity with those less fortunate in our community

During the month of May and June 2013

Every year The St Vincent de Paul Society amongst many other benevolent organisations

clothe, feed and accommodate the people most vulnerable in our community.

As winter sets in and we feel the cold we are called to be mindful of those who are in need.

The Galen Social Justice Committee invites you

to join with us in contributing blankets and non-perishables

to those in need in the Wangaratta area. Please give generously

any blankets and non-perishable foods. Any offering is most welcome.

Items can be brought to the Galen reception

from week 4 Term 2 (Monday 6th May)

These items will then be donated to the St Vincent de Paul Society and offered at the Solidarity mass at the end of June in thanks giving of your generosity. During Term 2 please

get behind this most essential need during winter.
