Respect, Responsibility, Resilience. Dear Parents/Carers NAPLAN Results will be released next week to parents of students who participated in this assessment. This year students across Australia completed the assessment online or by the traditional paper/pen version. Our students completed the assessment traditionally. As a result schools and parents are advised to read the results with caution. Extreme or unexpected results should be carefully considered. ACARA has included a letter of explanation to each family. Congratulations Kyan, Oakhill Drive Public School - Runner Up, Regional Spelling Bee competition. Ella, was one of the 70 finalists in the Threatened Species Children’s Art competition. Learning to play music is an opportunity for children to: - Extend more spheres of the brain - Discover there are rewards from hard work, commitment, practice and discipline - Develop creative thinking, active listening and fine motor skills - Develop teamwork, contribute to shared goals, and build friendships. Band Instruments With over 180 students participating in the band program, storage of instruments during the school day has become complicated. In the past students carried their instruments to their classrooms. However with more and more students participating in the program it is impossible to store these safely in the classroom or hallways. In order to avoid trips and falls, our students are now leaving their instruments in a designated zone in the hall during the day and it is the responsibility of each student to remember to collect their instrument from the hall at the end of the day. More information regarding out of area applications can be sought from our office. Please contact Susen Sparkes for advice. We encourage parents who have children turning 5 by May, June and July next year to have a talk with your local childcare or preschool regarding whether your child is ready for school next year. For more information regarding school readiness visit… http://www.schoolatoz.nsw.edu.au/wellbeing/development/is-my-child-ready-to-start-school

After the assemblies, Legend Award recipients will receive a permission note for the Legends Lunch in Term 4 Week 1. Helen Paris Deputy Principal Learning at Oakhill Drive – Peer Feedback Feedback is an integral part of supporting students to improve their learning. To be effective, feedback is specific information that explains what the student has done successfully towards the learning goal and what they can do to make their learning even better. Feedback may be given from the teacher, from other students or through student self-reflection. Yesterday, I learnt alongside students in 2D who were learning to create an artwork to represent a real object. Connecting with their history unit of learning, students were drawing a veteran car. They created their first draft; gave and received specific peer feedback which they then used to draw a second draft; students then repeated the feedback cycle to create a third draft. Examples of student feedback to make improvements included “you could make the back more of a triangular shape”; “if you added more lines on the wheels it would look more real”; “you could add 2 more wheels for the other side”; and “some shading here would look good”. All of the students knew what they had done well and what they could alter to make their drawings even better. The results of some of the students’ first and third drafts below show how powerful feedback is to improve learning.

Special Religious Education and Special Education in Ethics At Oakhill Drive Public School, Special Religious Education (SRE) and Special Education in Ethics (SEE) programs are offered for students. SRE is education in the beliefs and practices of an approved religious persuasion. SEE is a program in ethical decision making, action and reflection within a secular framework, based on a branch of philosophy. If a religious persuasion is communicated to the school, and this is available, students attend SRE each Friday, for 30 minutes. If a religion is not identified, some students may be offered to attend SEE lessons during this time. If students do not attend SRE or SEE, they are supervised by teachers and complete activities such as reading and drawing. Many families have nominated a religion but we are unable to provide SRE as we do not currently have trained volunteers to run SRE for that particular religion (eg Baha’i, Buddhism, Hinduism and Sikhism). Similarly, some parents have requested that their children attend SEE, but trained volunteers are not available to run the SEE program for each age group. If you would like to deliver SRE or SEE programs for our students, and are able to undertake training and WWC clearance to do so, please contact me to discuss. Julie Torney Deputy Principal R U OK Day – Thursday 13 September As part of our Quality Relationships and Wellbeing program, our students are getting ready to recognise R U OK Day this Wednesday. They will be learning ways to be a good friend and the 4 steps to communicating with others who may be sad: ASK, LISTEN, ENCOURAGE ACTION, CHECK IN. You may like to watch this YouTube clip about R U OK Day with your child. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ClCU3LwAVs On Wednesday we will be gluing every student’s photo onto large R U OK letters, which will be displayed on the actual R U OK day, Thursday, for parents to come and see in the morning or at pick up time. The message is that together we can look after each other. If you have not yet sent your 5cm x 5cm photo it’s not too late, please send it in by Wednesday and give it to your child’s teacher. R U OK at school? A range of circumstances can lead to a child feeling low, including: Big life changes like moving house or school Experiencing grief or loss
