Twin Towers ConstructionStructural engineers who designed the Twin Towers carried out studies in the mid-1960s to determine how the buildings would fare if hit by large jetliners. In all cases, the studies concluded that the Towers would survive the impacts and fires caused by the jetliners.

The Column Theory
Fire generally does not cause column damage in buildings like the Twin Towers. However, could the structural damage and the extra fuel loads of the jets have created conditions for column failure never before achieved?

Unlike columns, floor trusses are much easier to heatand will bend and eventually collapse from the fire and heat.

Fire SeveritySurprisingly, the fires were not nearly hot enough to significantly soften the steel in either Tower. The fires in the Towers were small compared to other serious high-rise fires, and were actually getting smaller at the time of its collapse.

Did both the columns and trusses fail?Engineers and architects believe that the Twin Towers collapsed because of redundant designs, which means that when one system fails, the other fails as well. The extreme heat caused both to fail.

Force and MotionThe columns and trusses were engineered to help the towers remain in place when struck by an object in motion. The engineers knew about Newton’s law and knew that if they did not put these safe guards into place, the towers would simply collapse on impact in order to continue with the forward momentum of the plane.
