OK, so your wedding day is on the horizon. Hopefully it’s just a tiny blip in the distance, and you’ve given yourself plenty of time for organising the big day. One of the first things you will want to do is to choose your dress. The dress requires time and planning, even if you’re buying a second-hand vintage dress, which if you're reading this article, we assume you are. The following five tips will help you to make the best decision when it comes to choosing a vintage wedding dress.

• Vintage doesn’t necessarily mean cheap.One of the biggest mistakes that people make when buying vintage wedding dresses is that they mistake the term ‘vintage’ for the term ‘thrift’.

Vintage dresses have style and sophistication. They are specialist items, much like antiques. Vintage dresses are elegant, sophisticated, specialist, and often expensive.

Thrift dresses might have this quality, but more often than not, they are simply second-hand dresses that people no longer want, and they have very few redeeming qualities. They might be damaged, out of shape, or in an inelegant style.

• Make sure you understand which era you’re buying. Different era dresses will require different accessories in order to look great. For example, if you were to pair a 1950s vintage dress with a pair of stilettos from the 1980s, that is likely to look odd, and rather than looking amazing in your wedding outfit, you might just look as if you don’t know how to dress properly!
