A/%&. T + L-.&(*): A Word About Birthdays:
It has been become a bit common to view Pentecost as the Church’s “Birthday.” In many ways, Saint Luke’s account of Pentecost feels like a birth in which the Spirit inaugurates the Church’s public witness to the world. Yet to use our cultural symbols of a birthday cake or singing, “Happy Birthday,” misses the point. On Pentecost, the Church began to express the mission that it already had since the very beginning of its existence. If there is any birthday metaphor to this day, it is found in Christ breathing the Spirit’s life into the disciples in that Upper Room, in the same way the Father breathed the Spirit into the nostrils of the first human, in the same way the Spirit breathed over the waters at the Creation, in the same way Jesus on the Cross breathed his last and handed over his spirit.
One way to look at the birth of the Church is in the light of the Sacraments of Initiation. Because the Holy Spirit is present from the beginning, the Spirit is first given to a person at Baptism, and that gift is sealed by the anointing of Confirmation and strengthened for mission by the Eucharist. As we can read in the General Introduction of Christian Initiation: “Thus the three sacraments of Christian initiate closely combine to bring us, the faithful of Christ, to his full stature and to enable us to carry out the mission of the entire people of God in the Church and in the world.” (2)

MOVING ON:
For the past year, we have had the pleasure of the presence of Father Justin Cinnante, O.Carm., in our midst. He has been serving as the Campus Minister at John S. Burke Catholic High School while living at Mount Carmel Priory and occasionally offering Sunday Mass here.
Beginning in August, Father Justin will serve instead as the Campus Minister at Iona Preparatory School in New Rochelle, NY. This means that he will be moving during the summer to live at Transfiguration Priory in Tarrytown, NY.
As we wish Father Justin well in this new ministry, a special Farewell Mass will be held on June 24. More details will be coming forth as the day approaches.
For the gift of his presence: Thank you!
For his life to come: Go with God!
