Ben Venews Principals Message Week 8 Term 3 Welcome to Week 8. A huge congratulations to Archie Clarke and Rhys MacDonald who were selected from more than 100 students as Student Video Presenters for the Arts Unit Audition program. The role entails presenting to camera a number of key points related to the auditioning process. The resource, which supports students through the audition process, has been developed by The Arts Unit for students who would like to get involved in the Department s Creative and Performing Arts programs. The tips given will assist any student in any auditioning situation including their local school and community programs. The videos rely on the student voice to engage with other students on a peer-to-peer level. The selected students will play a key role in creating the material they deliver. I know the boys will be fine representatives of Ben Venue Public School. Thank you to Michelle Porter for coordinating their audition for this role. Student Enrolments This week the enrolment panel will meet to look at out of zone enrolments for Kindergarten in 2021. The new enrolment policy is now in place and restricts the numbers of students it is possible to offer out of zone placements to. Previously, I was able to begin the year with 560 students, however now due to the new policy, I am restricted to beginning the year with 531 students. This will have a significant impact on the organisation of the school and may reduce some of the opportunities we were previously able to offer. Mobile Device Policy Please be reminded that all students who bring a mobile device to school are required to sign it in at the office each day and collect it from the office at the end of the day. I am attaching the current policy as a reminder for both parents and students. Year 6 Leaders It is always very pleasing to see our senior students taking the initiative to help make Ben Venue a school of kind, safe learners. In recent weeks our Year 6 students have begun organising activities and games in the playground at lunch times. This is a wonderful way to build connections to our school as well as building connections with each other and I thank them sincerely for contributing so positively to our school environment. New equipment Students are enjoying using the new pieces of equipment and handball squares we have added to our school environment. We have purchased sandpit toys for the sandpits, basketball hoops for the younger students and a flash basketball game for senior students. In addition to these we have on order new long skipping ropes, more table tennis equipment and several other pieces of equipment that will supplement our sports program. Principal’s Message Week 8 Term 3

Welcome to Week 8.

A huge congratulations to Archie Clarke and Rhys MacDonald who were

selected from more than 100 students as Student Video Presenters for the

Arts Unit Audition program. The role entails presenting to camera a number

of key points related to the auditioning process. The resource, which

supports students through the audition process, has been developed by The

Arts Unit for students who would like to get involved in the Department’s

Creative and Performing Arts programs. The tips given will assist any

student in any auditioning situation including their local school and

community programs. The videos rely on the student voice to engage with

other students on a peer-to-peer level. The selected students will play a key

role in creating the material they deliver. I know the boys will be fine

representatives of Ben Venue Public School.

Thank you to Michelle Porter for coordinating their audition for this role.

Student Enrolments

This week the enrolment panel will meet to look at out of zone enrolments for Kindergarten in 2021.

The new enrolment policy is now in place and restricts the numbers of students it is possible to offer

out of zone placements to. Previously, I was able to begin the year with 560 students, however now

due to the new policy, I am restricted to beginning the year with 531 students. This will have a

significant impact on the organisation of the school and may reduce some of the opportunities we were

previously able to offer.

Mobile Device Policy

Please be reminded that all students who bring a mobile device to school are required to sign it in at

the office each day and collect it from the office at the end of the day. I am attaching the current policy

as a reminder for both parents and students.

Year 6 Leaders

It is always very pleasing to see our senior students taking the initiative to help make Ben Venue a school of kind, safe learners. In recent weeks our Year 6 students have begun organising activities and games in the playground at lunch times. This is a wonderful way to build connections to our school as well as building connections with each other and I thank them sincerely for contributing so positively to our school environment.

New equipment

Students are enjoying using the new pieces of equipment and handball squares we have added to our school environment. We have purchased sandpit toys for the sandpits, basketball hoops for the younger students and a flash basketball game for senior students. In addition to these we have on order new long skipping ropes, more table tennis equipment and several other pieces of equipment that will supplement our sports program.

Term 4

Students conclude Term 3 on Friday 25 September and will return to school on Monday 12 October.

I anticipate receiving updated information about end of year celebrations and Kindergarten transition programs in the coming weeks. Currently, both of these are in doubt and we are looking at how things can be done differently however; I do remain hopeful that we will be able to hold some of these activities with only minor adjustments.

Our scheduled date for K-2 Celebration of Learning day is Wednesday 9 December and the date for Years 3-6 Presentation Day is Thursday 10 December.

Mobile Devices Policy - updated 2019 A mobile device refers to any device capable of communication or gaming. Some examples include but are not limited to tablets, smartphones, mobile phones and smart watches.

Rationale:

We understand that many parents/carers support and encourage their children to carry a mobile device. Mobile devices may be of some use as a protection from danger on the way to and from school or when normal travel arrangements break down. They may also be useful when after school activities are cancelled or changed. Mobile devices, however, can easily be improperly used, lost or damaged and therefore guidelines for their use in schools must be clear.

Aim:

To establish clear guidelines for student owned mobile devices at Ben Venue Public School that acknowledge the benefits of student owned mobile devices whilst minimising the potential problems they can cause.

Implementation:

Students are able to bring personal mobile devices to school for health, safety or personal reasons that justify students being in possession of a mobile device.

In the instance of a student requiring a mobile device for personal health reasons the use of the mobile device must be included in the student’s individual health care and management plan.

The school does not accept responsibility for lost or damaged student mobile devices.

It is a parents/ carers choice to send a student to school with a mobile device therefore they take responsibility for loss or damage to the device.

Students must sign in their mobile device at the office each morning and sign it out at the end of each day. Students are not permitted to use their device (this includes, SMS, recording audio, photographs, music and games) during the course of the school day. This includes recess and lunch breaks.

At the end of the day, after the device has been collected from the school office students are able to check their messages or contact parents whilst on school grounds. They are not able to use their device for videos, photographs, recording, music and games.

If a student uses a mobile device contrary to this policy the device will be confiscated and held at the school until a parent/ carer is able to collect the device.

No mobile devices are to be taken on school camps/ excursions. If a student wishes to use a mobile device as a camera the SIM card must be removed.

Evaluation:The policy will be reviewed as required.

We have chickens at Ben Venue!

Introducing ‘Chicken Nuggie’ and ‘Moffie’ named by our students.

What is Intrinsic Motivation at Ben Venue Public School?

This year the Wellbeing Project Team in consultation with all staff have

collaboratively planned and implemented playground expectations for all our

students to ensure that Ben Venue is a place of ‘Kind, Safe, Learners’. These

expectations are our ‘norms’ for positive playground behaviours and all students

have an active role to play in supporting each other to make our school a place

where everyone feels safe, engaged and connected to each other.

We develop and embed our playground expectations with a focus on intrinsic

motivation. This is a motivation from within, where students are motivated to do

something without reward, because it is the ‘norm’ and a sense of personal

satisfaction is the motivating force to meet expectations.

Intrinsic motivation is strongly linked to student wellbeing as it supports students to

be curious, eager to participate, interested and excited to try challenging tasks. As

well as in the playground, this is supported in classrooms where students have a

focus on their own individual positive learning goals. These goals are meaningful to

students, allowing them to experience the feelings of self-satisfaction,

accomplishment and the feeling of being proud of their efforts.
