Assistant Professor Depatment of Library & Informatio Science

Concept of WebometricsWebometrics is concerned with measuring aspects of the web: web sites, web pages, parts of web pages, words in web pages, hyperlinks, web search engine results.

Webometrics is (a) a set of quantitative techniques for tracking and evaluating the impact of web sites and online ideas and (b) the information science research field that developed these ideas. Webometric techniques include link analysis, web mention analysis, blog analysis and search engine evaluation, but from the perspective of digital library evaluation the main method is link analysis.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEMWeb resources are apple of information professional’s eye due to its value added

services to meet their current and diversified information needs. In the World Wide

Web (WWW), the web pages are the entities of information, with hyperlinks from

them acting as citations.

Quantitative analysis on the WWW is being carried out in the same way, as is

tradition in citation databases. As information on web increases towards entropy,

it’s needed to apply some theory/metrics (measurement) to develop new methods,

modeling techniques and metaphors to examine this emerging complex network.

By keeping this view in mind, the researcher intends to undertake the study on

“Webometric study of J. R. D Tata Memorial Library in Indian Institute of

Science, Bangalore”. This study attempt to analyses the website of IISc Library.

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

To identify and analyze the library website of Indian Institute of

Science.

To calculate various types of web impact factors for Indian Institute

of Science.

To identify the domain or sub-domain systems of all the websites of

Indian Institute of Science as per the web pages.

To calculate the number of web pages, number of self link pages and

external link pages of the websites library in Indian Institute of Science.

TOOLS USED FOR STUDY

Web accessibility evaluation tools are software programs or online services

that help determine if a Web site meets accessibility guidelines. While Web

accessibility evaluation tools can significantly reduce the time and effort to

evaluate Web sites, no tool can automatically determine the accessibility of

Web sites. This study focuses some of the webometrics tools are followed:

The J.R.D Tata Memorial Library of the Indian Institute of Science (IISc.) Bangalore

was established in 1911 and it is one of the first three departments started in the

Institute. It is regarded as one of the best scientific and technical libraries in India.

Apart from the Main Library it has departmental libraries also. In 1995 the library was

renamed as "J.R.D Tata Memorial Library". The National Board for Higher

Mathematics (NBHM) has recognized this library as Regional Center for Mathematics

for the south region and continued to award a special grant towards subscription of

Journals in Mathematics. It is no exaggeration to state that the IISc library is the largest

and finest of its kind in this part of the world.

Total HTTP Requests: 9

Total Size: 40941bytes

Object Size Totals

The total objects on this page (including the HTML) is 9 which most browsers can

multithread in a reasonable amount of time. Minimizing HTTP requests is key to

minimizing object overhead (see Figure II-3: Relative distribution of latency

components showing that object overhead dominates web page latency in Website

Optimization Secrets for more details on how object overhead dominates web page

latency.

TOTAL_HTML - the total number of HTML files on this page (including the main HTML file) is 2 which most browsers can multithread. Minimizing HTTP requests is key for web site optimization. Y

TOTAL_IMAGES - the total number of images on this page is 2 . Most browsers can send multiple requests, which can speed display of multiple images.

TOTAL_SIZE - the total size of this page is 40941 bytes. This page should load in 9.96 seconds on a 56Kbps modem. Based on current average web page size and composition trends you want your page to load in less than 20 seconds on a 56Kbps connection, with progressive feedback. Ideally you want your page to load in 3 to 4 seconds on a broadband connection, and 8 to 12 seconds for the HTML on a dialup connection. of course, there's always room for improvement.

TOTAL_SCRIPT - Caution. The total number of external script files on this page is 5, consider reducing this to one or two. Combine, refactor, and minify to optimize your JavaScript files. Ideally you should have one (or even embed scripts for high-traffic pages) on your pages. Consider suturing JavaScript files together at the server to minimize HTTP requests. Placing external JavaScript files at the bottom of your BODY, and CSS files in the HEAD enables progressive display in XHTML web pages.

HTML_SIZE - the total size of this HTML file is 8435 bytes, which less than 50K. Assuming that you specify

the HEIGHT and WIDTH of your images, this size allows your HTML to display content in under 10 seconds, the average time users are willing to wait for a page to display without feedback.

IMAGES_SIZE - the total size of all your images is 561 bytes, which is less than 50K. Even with a 50K HTML page this page should load in less than 20 seconds on a 56Kbps connection. Ideally each image should be less than 1160 bytes, to easily fit into one TCP-IP packet.

SCRIPT_SIZE - The total size of external your scripts is 31945 bytes, which is over 20K. Consider optimizing your JavaScript for size, combining them, and using HTTP compression where appropriate for any scripts placed in the HEAD of your documents. You can substitute CSS menus for JavaScript-based menus to minimize or even eliminate the use of JavaScript.

MULTIM_SIZE - the total size of all your external multimedia files is 0 bytes, which is less than 10K .

FINDINGS AND CONCLUSION

J.R.D Tata Memorial Library in Indian Institute of Science has their own domain

server for website and used a standard design and structure.

The growing use of Academic Programmes, Electronic Theses and Dissertation, E-

print and INDEST or AICTE resources and so on. It has revolutionized the process of

Institute publicity and dissemination of information pertaining to resource services,

rules and regulations.

The information provided in the web pages of J.R.D Tata Memorial Library in Indian

Institute of Science in globally and their pages need to be evaluated periodically using

web analying tools like Web optimization, web aim, alexa etc. This will help the IISc to

improve their websites according to the user’s needs.
