Microsoft PowerPoint Basic Setup


Getting Started with a New Presentation

Open an existing PowerPoint file, a blank presentation, or select a pre-formatted template


Open an Existing File

Select “Open” to find an existing file from Recent Presentations, OneDrive,

or your Computer


A New, Blank Presentation

Blank presentation includes a basic content pane.

Select a theme and either standard or widescreen format from Design Tab.


Select a Theme

Select a theme from the Design tab and click on the Variants down-arrow

to see Colors, Fonts, Effects, and Background

Style options.


Slide Master

Select Slide Master from the View tab to create a master deck format with

your logo, copyright, fonts, and format styles for all

slide layouts.


Add More Slides and Change Layout

Add more slides by right-clicking on the slide

thumbnail. Select Layout and pick the slide format

you want.


Adding Text and New Slides

Simply click in an existing text box to add text. Click

the edges to move or resize text boxes. Right click to add new slides

and change slide layout.

Ctrl+Enter also adds a new slide or select “New Slide from the Home tab.

Inserting Media and Charts

Click icons to Insert Table, Chart, SmartArt, Pictures,

Video directly into your deck. You can also select

the Insert tab on the ribbon for more options.

Right-click on your table/chart to see options to edit fonts, insert cells,

change color. Select Table Tools to see detailed table

options.

Insert an image file from your computer and double-click to view

formatting options, styles, size, color, and

arrangement options.

Pro-tip: If your file is too large to email, select

“Compress Pictures” and un-check “Apply only to this picture” to compress all images in your slide

deck and reduce your file size.

Slideshow, Transitions, and Animations


Transitions (Between Slides)

• Motion when switching from slide-to-slide• Can be pre-timed to move quickly or slowly• Can include audio clips• Can be applied to all slides consistently• Should be used sparingly


Animations (On Single Slide)

• Motion on a single slide• Used to pull content onto the slide (bullet-by-bullet, for example)• Can be timed• Should be used sparingly

Play Slideshow

Advance slides by mouse-clicking, using the key, or using Enter. Hit Esc to

exit.


Markup Tools During Slideshow

Lower-left has arrows to move back/forth through

slides and markup tools to zoom, highlight, draw on

screen.

Present Online for free to share the link to your

slideshow live or Record Slide Show to record
