NOTES FROM THE LOFT Fifth Sunday of Easter May 14, 2017

In the Jewish Faith – and consequently in ours – there is a fifty-day period between Passover (our Easter) and Pentecost. In their agricultural culture, this was a season of growth, WHEAT being the newly-planted crop, which would be harvested in seven weeks at Pentecost.

The First Reading from Luke’s "Acts of the Apostles" tells of an even greater growth! For the disciples of Jesus, in whom had been planted the seeds of FAITH in His resurrection, numbers were increasing greatly! The Scriptures had been fulfilled! Stories of Jesus’ appearances were circulating in and around Jerusalem!

The Jewish hierarchy was no doubt in a panic and still reeling from damage done to the Temple – especially the tearing of the great veil in the Sanctuary during the earthquake of Good Friday. They had gone so far as to bribe the soldiers to lie about falling asleep on duty, assuring them they would smooth things over with their superiors. But not all of them, for Luke tells us “even a large group of priests were becoming obedient to the faith.”

Finally, there was Pilate, who must have been furious and sleepless over his unwilling involvement in the entire affair, now dispatching his military to find proof of a hoax, and fearfully, nervously on the alert to all possibilities of civil disturbance serious enough to reach the ears of Rome!

Some lesser known Easter music tells these stories of amazement and appearances. During Eastertide, why should we not tell and retell – and sing anew - the marvelous deeds God has worked to save us?! THREE DAYS #174 is set to the familiar tune known as “Thaxted” and recalls the experiences of the holy women at the tomb and the disciples who rushed back to Jerusalem from Emmaus. TWO WERE BOUND FOR EMMAUS # 160, set to the Celtic melody, “Kenmare”, so-named for a small town at the head of Kenmare Bay, County Kerry, describes the second miraculous catch of fish and Peter’s vocation to tend Christ’s sheep.

The Choir will open next Sunday’s Mass with NOW THE GREEN BLADE RISES # 157, set to a traditional French melody. As we anticipate the harvest of the Spirit at Pentecost, let us sing, “Love is come again like WHEAT arising green!”

RESPECT LIFELife: What we believe influences how we act". “While there are many moral concerns that candidates need to address, concern for protecting the unborn needs to be at the top of the list. How indeed can we speak of other human rights if, as a nation, we are not prepared

to protect the first and most basic human right - the right to life itself? ….As Catholics, we believe in the inherent dignity of all life, created as we are in God's image and likeness.  That's not just a nice "idea," it is a powerful belief that has practical consequences in the way we treat one another in daily life.Archbishop John C. NienstedtThe next Respect Life Holy Hour, Friday, May 19 at 7:00 p.m. will honor Mothers in a special way.

THE MONTH OF MARYThe month of May has traditionally been dedicated to Our Blessed Lady and, as such, is the occasion for moving tributes of faith and love which Catholics in every part of the world pay to the Queen of Heaven. During this month, both in church and in the privacy of our homes, we offer up to Mary an especially heartfelt homage of prayer and veneration. Here at Assumption we will be honoring many images of Mary in the sanctuary throughout the month of May.

91One hundred years ago – on May 13, 1917 – our Lady made her first appearance to three shepherd children in Fátima, Portugal. Over the next six months, she appeared five more times to Lúcia Santos and her cousins Jacinta and Francisco Marto. To mark the centenary of the First Apparition of Our Lady

of Fátima, Assumption is planning a bus trip to the National Blue Army Shrine of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in Washington, New Jersey on Saturday, May 13. The cost per person is $30. The bus will leave at 6:30 AM Sharp from the commuter train parking lot across from Homestyle bakery and will return at approximately 7:30

pm. If interested, please contact Lisa Smith at (914) 257-7008 for more information.

HONORING 100 YEARS OF OUR LADY OF FÁTIMAJoin us the 1st Saturdays and the

13ths of the months of May-October.Our Lady of Fatima made special promises for those who pray in a special way on the first Saturday of the month. In observance of the 100th anniversary of the Fatima apparitions, the 1st Saturdays (May 7, June 4, July 2, August 6, September 3, and October 1) will consist of an 8:30AM Rosary, followed by the 9:00AM Mass, and closing with a 15 minute silent meditation on the mysteries after the 9:00AM Mass. The 13ths of these months May- September will consist of a Rosary at 8:30AM, followed by the 9:00AM Mass, with Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. On the 13th of October there will be a special 8:00PM bilingual Mass celebration with Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament concluded with a reception in the FWH.

THE CROWNING OF MARYThe month of May has traditionally been dedicated to Our Blessed Lady and, as such, is the occasion for moving tributes of faith and love which Catholics in every part of the world pay to the Queen of Heaven. Our annual May Crowning of the statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary – sponsored by the Columbiettes will take place after the 12:00pm Mass on Sunday, May 7 and will include children who recently received their First Communion.

Refreshments will be provided by the Columbiettes in the Annex Hall following the 12:00 pm Mass.

“SIT SOMEWHERE ELSE” SUNDAYDuring the fifth week of Easter, during the daily readings, the Church meditates on the image of the Church as the vine which the Father, the Vinedresser, prunes so it will bear more fruit. As we have done for the last several years, next Sunday, May 14 has been designated “Sit Somewhere Else” Sunday. (But still inside the Church, mind you!) To create new relationships in our parish community, we ask all parishioners at the Sunday (and Saturday evening) Masses to refrain from sliding automatically into the same old seat in the same old pew, but be adventurous instead, shaking up your routine by sitting in a different seat in a different pew. Who knows? You may wind up next to people who have attended the same Mass you have for the past umpteen number of years that you’ve never even met!Let's see what “new fruit” the Lord wishes us to bear.

BABY BOTTLE DRIVEFrom Mother's Day to Father's Day, Assumption’s Pro Life Ministry will run a Baby Bottle Drive to support Birthright, which serve mothers in crisis pregnancies by helping them to choose and give life to their babies. Parishioners are invited to take a bottle home on the weekend of May 13 & 14, Mother’s Day weekend, and return it with donations on the weekend of June 17-18, Father’s Day weekend. You can find the bottles in the vestibule, with directions inside them. Thank you for helping to support this mission and to save lives!

BEHIND THE SCENES AT ASSUMPTIONIt takes many people to see to it that a parish runs smoothly. In our continuing series highlighting parish employees and volunteers, we focus this week on Father Vincent Druding, Parochial Vicar.

I was born in Arlington Heights, IL, a northern suburb of Chicago, the youngest of six children, and was a surprise for my parents, Vince and Marian Druding, as my nearest sibling is five and half years older than me. Perhaps, the Lord blessed my parents with a final child, since three years before I was born, my bother Daniel

(14) was killed by lightning after a baseball game. When, I was 6 months old, our family moved to Carmel, IN, where

I attended 8 years of Our Lady of Mount Carmel (OLMC) grammar school. My childhood in Carmel was richly blessed with family, friends, sports, and a wonderful parish. It was at OLMC that I first began hearing God’s voice calling me to be a priest. I went to Cathedral High School in Indianapolis and then to Wabash College, also in Indiana, where I majored in religion. After college, I worked for a year, eventually as a head hunter, and then went to University of Chicago for a graduate program in Humanities. After UC, I applied for a Fellowship in Public Affairs with the CORO Foundation, and got assigned to New York City. My first full day of work at my first assignment was 9-11-2001, and most of you know I was there a few blocks away when the second plane exploded into the tower. I worked as a civilian volunteer at Ground Zero from the 12th – 17th, and had two encounters with Our Lord through two priests there, one of whom gave me Communion on Sunday, and the Lord gave me a palpable peace amidst the horror. Shortly afterward, my friend encouraged me to go to confession, and I told the priest, “I either want to get married or become a priest; I want to live for a higher purpose than myself.” After some moths of regular confession and daily Mass, I surrendered and accepted the call to be a priest. I worked for First Things Magazine for two years before entering St. Joseph’s Seminary, and was ordained in 2009. I am truly awed by Jesus Christ and the mystery of this vocation, and I am so grateful that after serving at Our Lady of Angels and St. Rita’s in the Bronx, the Lord called me to Assumption in Peekskill. I offered my life to Our Lady years ago, and she has been my refuge, through the death of my parents and brother Mike in 2010, and each day in the vineyard of the Lord. I am blessed to have my sisters, Kris and Colleen, and brother Patrick, and 9 nieces and nephews; however, I have been doubly blessed to see that the 100-fold promise of Jesus has been fulfilled in ways I could never have imagined.

HONORING OUR VETERANSParish volunteers are needed to assist members of the American Legion in

placing Memorial Day flags on the graves of the 1,455 veterans buried at Assumption Cemetery. Weather permitting, those lending a hand will meet at the cemetery on Saturday, May 13 starting at 9:00am. (Rain date, if needed, would be the following Saturday, May 20.)
