THE ROEDEAN MUSIC COMPETITIONPRESENTED BY ROEDEAN SCHOOL (SA)

IN CONJUNCTION WITH

LOVEMORE MUSIC CENTREAND

YAMAHA

After fifteen years of successful performances, Roedean School (SA), in conjunction with

Yamaha and Lovemore Music Centre, will once again be hosting the highly esteemed

Roedean Music Competition, aimed at Senior School pupils (Grades 8-12) mainly in and

around Gauteng.

This competition consists of a First Round and a Final Round in the form of a prestigious

Gala Event. The competition consists of five categories: Piano, Strings, Woodwind, Brass,

and Vocal. Two finalists from each category will be elected to perform at the Gala Evening.

Each contestant will be issued with a written report and certificate, after the completion of the

First Round, whilst category winners will only be announced at the Gala Evening, scheduled

for 8 June 2018.

The purpose of this document is to inform contestants of the rules applicable to this

competition. The onus, however, rests on the teachers to ensure that the rules have been

read and clearly understood.

1. GENERAL INFORMATION1.1 The First Round commences on Monday, 28 May, 2018, and will take place at

Roedean School (SA) on specified mornings and/or afternoons. This round will

run until Friday, 1 June, 2018.

1.2 The Gala Evening will take place at 18:00 for 18:30 on Friday, 8 June, 2018, in

Founders’ Hall at Roedean School (SA).

1.3 The onus rests on the contestant to ensure that all contact details are provided

and that the school is advised of any change of details. Please ensure that the

entry form contains all the current and correct details of the teacher and the

student.

1.4 The organisers will use personal details for the purposes of administering this

competition, but will not publish or provide such details to anyone, without the

consent of the contestant.

1.5 Contestants are hereby informed that all, or parts of, the Competition may be

recorded/photographed, whether on video, audio, or other media, for

promotional purposes and have consented, free of any consideration, to such

recordings/photographs.

1.6 The organisers do not accept any responsibility for late or lost entries.

1.7 Entry fees will not be refunded.

1.8 Contestants, parents/guardians of contestants, and teachers, will be deemed

to have accepted these rules and to have agreed to be bound by them when

entering this competition.

2. GENERAL RULES2.1 First-prize winners from 2017 are not allowed to compete in the same

category.

2.2 Contestants must NOT be older than 18 years or post-Matric. The age of a

contestant will be deemed as at 11 May 2018.

2.3 Contestant may not perform any of the same repertoire that they have

presented in the previous year.

2.4 Contestants will be informed of the exact dates and times of their

performances. Contestants will be allowed to perform only during their

allocated times.

2.5 Contestants must ensure that they report to Hersov Hall, Roedean School

(SA), at least 20 minutes before the allocated times.

2.6 Contestants are expected to stay until the end of their sessions. Certificates

and adjudication reports will be presented only at the end of each session in

the First Round.

2.7 Contestants should play from original publications at all times in compliance

with strict SAMRO copyright regulations.

2.8 Each contestant must submit one complete set of photocopies of his/her

programme, with name and surname clearly visible on the front, for

adjudication. These photocopies will be shredded afterwards.

2.9 The performance of each contestant will be timed. A MAXIMUM of 10 minutes

is given to each contestant. Contestants will be disqualified if they exceed the

time-limit by ONE minute.

2.10Contestants must provide their own accompanists and/or page turners if

necessary. All travel fees and accompanists’ fees are the contestant’s

responsibility.

2.11The adjudicators’ decision is final and no correspondence or verbal negotiation

will be entered into.

2.12The adjudicators reserve the right not to award a prize in any category, should

they deem the standard of performance to be unacceptable.

3. DISQUALIFICATIONS3.1 A contestant will be disqualified, if he/she fails to arrive at Roedean School

(SA) on the correct date and at the correct time for his/her performance.

3.2 A contestant will be disqualified, if he/she has not adhered to the rules

applicable to his/her category. Refer to Sections 4 and 5 of this document.

4. RULES: INSTRUMENTAL CATEGORIES 4.1 Contestants should be of a Grade 6 or higher practical standard.

4.2 The available categories are: Piano, Strings (specify instrument on entry form),

Woodwinds (specify instrument on entry form), and Brass (specify instrument

on entry form).

4.3 Contestants may enter in more than one instrumental category.

4.4 Contestants must present one of the following:

(a) One piece of own choice, not exceeding 10 minutes in total

OR

(b) A selection of contrasting styles, not exceeding 10 minutes in total.

4.5 PIANO CONTESTANTS may NOT perform a Concerto or movement from a Concerto.

4.6 Only works of a serious nature will be accepted. Contestants will not be

allowed to present light popular genres such as Rock, Hip-Hop, and House.

4.7 Contestants should observe Da Capo and Dal Segno indications, but other

repeats of more than a few bars should not be played.

5. RULES: VOCAL CATEGORY 5.1 Contestants should be of a Grade 4 or higher practical standard.

5.2 Contestants must present a programme of two different items (A & B), not

exceeding 10 minutes in total.

Item A can be a choice of either:

(a) An Opera Aria (from the Renaissance, Baroque, or Classical Period), any

Operetta Aria, or any Oratorio Aria. This aria must be sung in the original

language and key.

OR(b) Any Art Song. Art Songs in Italian, German, French, and English must be

sung in its original language, whilst Art Songs in other languages, such as

Russian, may be translated. Arts Songs may also be transposed to suit

the contestant’s voice.

AND

Item B must be a Musical Theatre Song. Contestants will not be allowed to

present light popular genres such as Rock, Hip-Hop, and House.

5.3 The programme must include at least two different languages.

6.1 The finalists for the Gala Evening will be notified on Monday, 4 June, 2018.

6.2 Instrumental finalists must present their entire programme as presented in

Round One whilst vocal finalists must present both pieces from the repertoire

that was presented in Round One.

6.3 Contestants must report to Founders’ Hall, Roedean School (SA), at 16:30.

6.4 The prize-winners will only be announced at the end of the evening, after the

adjudicators have made their final decision.

7. PRIZES

The prizes will consist of vouchers, redeemable at any Lovemore Centre. The following

prizes are awarded in each of the five categories:
