Curriculum and Pacing Guide: 1200700 Mathematics for College Readiness Text: Intermediate Algebra, Third Ed., Pearson 2008 – Revised June 2011

Resources: http://www.floridastandards.org/http://www.nctm.org/standards/http://www.tinavigator.com/

The Essential Questions

Quarter 1: (Weeks 1 – 9) What are the similarities and differences in solving equations and solving formulas? How can you use linear equations, their graphs, and relationship tables to model real world situation? How are solving systems of equations by substitution, linear combination, and matrices alike and different?

Quarter 2: (Weeks 10 – 19)

How are functions and variations used to model the relationship between variables in the real word? What are the similarities and differences between long division and synthetic division of polynomials? How does one determine the appropriate strategy or method to use in factoring a polynomial? How do solving rational equations and simplifying rational expressions compare and contrast?

Page 2: Web viewThe student will edit for correct use of grammar and usage, including but not limited to parts of speech, verb tense, noun/pronoun agreement, subject/verb agreement

Quarter 3: (Weeks 20 – 29)

What are the similarities of differences between using rational exponents and radical notation in solving problems? How does one determine the method to use to solve a quadratic equation?

Quarter 4: (Weeks 30 – 39)

How can union and intersection be applied to authentic (real world) situations? How are exponential and logarithmic functions used to study naturally occurring phenomena?

Note: A TI-83 or TI-84 is appropriate for this course. Students should become familiar with doing the mathematics “by hand” as well as with the calculator.
