Many symbols are used to represent a meaning, belief, or idea. Here are a few you may recognize.

2015 - Grade 3 Unit IV PAT

These are symbols that represent peace. There are often multiple symbols that represent the same idea.

This is the symbol for the American Red Cross. The American Red Cross provides first aid, disaster relief, and emergency assistance within the United States of America.

This is the symbol for recycling. It is used on products you are able to recycle, and also used on recycling bins, showing that trash should not go into those containers.

This is the Commonwealth of Virginia seal. A seal is made up of multiple parts/symbols that each mean something. Those parts are put together to show meaning through pictures.

The lady standing is Virtus (virtue). She represents the Commonwealth of Virginia. The man lying on the ground is called Tyranny. Tyranny means cruel and unfair government rule. Tyranny stands for Great Britain in this seal. The crown lying beside tyranny shows that he is no longer ruling over Virginia (and the United States). The words on the bottom are in Latin. They say Sic Semper Tyrannis, which means “Thus always to tyrants”. That means if Tyrants try to rule Virginia again, Virtus (virtue) will triumph.
