FOCUS Certification CoursesThe FOCUS team has been working hard this summer implementing many exciting changes within the FOCUS program. These changes have allowed for the expansion of training offerings to include the entire 16- course FOCUS Certification program each 9 weeks. Our goal is to have as many employees as possible trained by the end of the year. Courses will also be added and updated to bring those who are already certified to remain current.

Who should take the FOCUS Certification Courses? This training will benefit administrators (district or school-based), guidance counselors, data entry clerks, or FOCUS lead teachers who are not already trained. This certification is also recommended for staff members who assist with or aspire to take on one of the roles above.

When and where are the courses offered? Each course is approximately 3 hours long and is offered in a morning and an afternoon session. Afternoon sessions are designed to accommodate those who cannot get away from school during student contact time. Unfortunately, we are not able to compensate participants with stipends or flex time. Times and locations are listed in the chart below. Participants should register in Navigator Plus. Search "2014-2015 IS..." or use the calendar feature to locate the course. In-Service Points (3 per class) will be awarded to participants who successfully complete the course and submit the follow-up survey along with the required follow-up activity. Which courses should I take? Do I have to take them all? There are certification tracks offered specific to particular job duties. Participants can sign up for any of the courses, regardless of their current position. Participation does not require completion of all courses. However, completing an entire track will be rewarded with a certificate of completion.

Please direct all questions to John Mescall at [email protected] .

PALSPeer-Assisted Literacy

StrategiesPALS Reading is a structured, peer-mediated reading activity. Each member of the pair takes turns being coach and reader and are awarded points for good reading and coaching. As the reader reads aloud, the coach listens and provides corrective feedback. PALS does not require special reading material. Teachers may use library books or short stories. In Kindergarten PALS, children practice letter-sound correspondence, decoding, phonological awareness, and sight words. In First-grade PALS, children practice decoding, sight words, and reading fluency. 2nd grade students continue the work began in first grade.

All Kindergarten, 1st Grade and 2nd Grade teachers are invited to training on the PALS Program and foundation skills. Please register on Navigator Plus. Activity titles are listed below. Each participant will receive a PALS manual at the training.Training opportunities:Tuesday, October 21, 2014 Kindergarten teachersCurriculum 14/15: Kindergarten PALS (Peer-Assisted Literacy Strategies)TTC Main Room at Fleming Island High School 8:00-3:00
