TRANSCRIPT

Welcome! We bid you a very warm welcome to our worship. As we gather in this sacred space, silent prayer and reflection helps us to prepare for the service. Listening devices are available for the hearing impaired during the service; contact one of our greeters.

Prelude

Words of welcome

Please rise as you are able to sing our opening Hymn No. 631, in Common Praise.

1 The kingdom of God is justice and joy,For Jesus restores what sin would destroy.God’s power and glory in Jesus we know,And here and hereafter the kingdom shall grow.

2 The kingdom of God is mercy and grace; The captives are freed, the sinners find place. The outcasts are welcomed God’s banquet to share,And hope is awakened in place of despair.

3 The kingdom of God is challenge and choice;believe the good news, repent and rejoice! His love for us sinners brought Christ to his cross,Our crisis of judgment for gain and for loss.

4 God’s kingdom is come, the gift and the goal,In Jesus begun, in heaven made whole. The heirs of the kingdom shall answer his call, and all things cry “Glory!” to God All-in-All.

2

Priest +The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God,and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit,be with you all.

All And also with you.Priest Let us pray. All Almighty God,

to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hidden. Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name;through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Please rise as you are able to sing together the ‘Gloria in Excelsis.’

Priest Let us pray. All Inviting God, laying open your table to

those without status or power,

3

and setting a place for the foreign and the unwanted:overturn our tables of power and teach us to receive bread from strange and wounded hands;through Jesus Christ, the one given for all. Amen.

Children’s focus

Please sit for a reading from the Prophecy of Jeremiah (Chapter 2.4-13)Hear the word of the Lord, O house of Jacob, and all the families of the house of Israel. Thus says the Lord:What wrong did your ancestors find in me   that they went far from me,and went after worthless things, and became worthless themselves? They did not say, ‘Where is the Lord   who brought us up from the land of Egypt, who led us in the wilderness,   in a land of deserts and pits,in a land of drought and deep darkness,   in a land that no one passes through,   where no one lives?’ I brought you into a plentiful land   to eat its fruits and its good things. But when you entered you defiled my land,   and made my heritage an abomination. The priests did not say, ‘Where is the Lord?’   Those who handle the law did not know me;the rulers transgressed against me;   the prophets prophesied by Baal,   and went after things that do not profit. Therefore once more I accuse you, says the Lord,   and I accuse your children’s children.

4

Cross to the coasts of Cyprus and look,   send to Kedar and examine with care;   see if there has ever been such a thing. Has a nation changed its gods,   even though they are no gods? But my people have changed their glory   for something that does not profit. Be appalled, O heavens, at this,   be shocked, be utterly desolate, says the Lord, for my people have committed two evils:   they have forsaken me,the fountain of living water,   and dug out cisterns for themselves, cracked cisterns   that can hold no water.

Reader Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people. All Thanks be to God.Please remain seated to chant Psalm 81

Cantor sings Refrain

All sing Refrain

Choir only 1 Sing with joy to | God our | strength *and raise a loud shout to the | God of | Jacob.

10 I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of E-|gypt and | said,

*‘Open your mouth wide, and | I will | fill it.’

11 And yet my people did not | hear my | voice, *

5

and Israel would | not obey | me.12 So I gave them over to the stubbornness | of their |

hearts, *to follow their | own de-|vices.

All sing Refrain

Choir only 13 Oh, that my people would lis-|ten to | me! *That Israel would walk | in my | ways!

14 I should soon sub-|due their | enemies *and turn my hand a-|gainst their | foes.

15 Those who hate the Lord would | cringe be-|fore me, *

and their punishment would | last for | ever.16 But Israel would I feed with the | finest | wheat *

and satisfy them with honey | from the | rock.”All sing Refrain

Please sit for a reading from the Letter to the Hebrews (Chapter 13.1-8,15-16)Let mutual love continue. Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing that some have entertained angels without knowing it. Remember those who are in prison, as though you were in prison with them; those who are being tortured, as though you yourselves were being tortured. Let marriage be held in honour by all, and let the marriage bed be kept undefiled; for God will judge fornicators and adulterers. Keep your lives free from the love of money, and be content with what you have; for he has said, ‘I will never leave you or forsake you.’ So we can say with confidence,‘The Lord is my helper;   I will not be afraid. What can anyone do to me?’ Remember your leaders, those who spoke the word of God to you; consider the outcome of their

6

way of life, and imitate their faith. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and for ever. Through him, then, let us continually offer a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that confess his name. Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.

Reader Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people. All Thanks be to God.

Please rise as you are able to sing our Gradual Hymn No 524 in Common Praise

1 O Christ the great foundationon which your people standto preach your true salvationin every age and land:pour out your Holy Spiritto make us strong and pure,to keep the faith unbrokenas long as worlds endure.

2 Baptized in one confession, one church in all the earth,we bear our Lord's impression, the sign of second birth. One holy people gatheredin love beyond our own;by grace we were invited,by grace we make you known.

3 Where tyrants' hold is tightened, where strong devour the weak, where innocents are frightenedthe righteous fear to speak;there let your church awakingattack the powers of sin,

7

and, all their ramparts breaking, with you the victory win.

We remain standing and turn to face the Deacon

DeaconAlleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

All Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.Deacon Your words, O Lord,

are food for my soul, my hope of salvation. All Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.Deacon The Lord be with you.All And also with you.Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ,

according to St Luke. (Chapter 14.1, 7-14)All Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ.Deacon On one occasion when Jesus was going to the

house of a leader of the Pharisees to eat a meal on the Sabbath, they were watching him closely. When he noticed how the guests chose the places of honour, he told them a parable. ‘When you are invited by someone to a wedding banquet, do not sit down at the place of honour, in case someone more distinguished than you has been invited by your host; and the host who invited both of you may come and say to you, “Give this person your place”, and then in disgrace you would start to take the lowest place. But when you are invited, go and sit down at the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he may say to you, “Friend, move up higher”; then you will be honoured in the presence of all who sit at the table with you. For all who exalt

8

themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.’ He said also to the one who had invited him, ‘When you give a luncheon or a dinner, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbours, in case they may invite you in return, and you would be repaid. But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind. And you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you, for you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.’

At the conclusion of the Gospel

Deacon The Gospel of Christ. All Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

4 This is the moment glorious when he, who once was dead, shall lead his church victorious, their champion and their head. The Lord of all creation his heavenly kingdom brings: the final consummation, the glory of all things.

Silence is kept

Priest Most merciful God,All we confess that we have sinned against you

in thought, word, and deed,by what we have done,

10

and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart;we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us,that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways,to the glory of your name. All Amen. Please rise as you are able for the Peace

Priest The peace of the Lord be always with you.All And also with you. Please exchange a sign of peace

During the singing of Hymn No 385 in Common Praise, a collection will be taken

1 Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness;bow down before him, his glory proclaim;gold of obedience and incense of lowlinessbring, and adore him: the Lord is his name!

2 Low at his feet lay thy burden of carefulness, high on his heart he will bear it for thee, comfort thy sorrows, and answer thy prayerfulness, guiding thy steps as may best for thee be.

11

3 Fear not to enter his courts in the slendernessof the poor wealth thou canst reckon as thine;truth in its beauty, and love in its tenderness, these are the offerings to lay on his shrine.

4 These, though we bring them in trembling and fearfulness,he will accept for the name that is dear;mornings of joy give for evenings of tearfulness, trust for our trembling, and hope for our fear.

5 Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness;bow down before him, his glory proclaim;gold of obedience and incense of lowlinessbring, and adore him; the Lord is his name!

Prayer over the gifts

Priest Merciful God,receive all we offer you this day.Give us grace to love one anotherthat your love may be made perfect in us.We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord.

All Amen.

12

Priest It is indeed right that we should praise you, gracious God,for you created all things. You formed us in your own image: you created us.When we turned away from you in sin,you did not cease to care for us,but opened a path of salvation for all people. You made a covenant with Israel, and through your servants Abraham and Sarahgave the promise of a blessing to all nations.Through Moses you led your peoplefrom bondage into freedom;through the prophetsyou renewed your promise of salvation. Therefore, with them, and with all your saintswho have served you in every age,we give thanks and raise our voicesto proclaim the glory of your name.

Priest Holy God, source of life and goodness, all creation rightly gives you praise. In the fullness of time,

13

you sent your Son Jesus Christ,to share our human nature,to live and die as one of us,to reconcile us to you,the God and Father of all.He healed the sickand ate and drank with outcasts and sinners;he opened the eyes of the blindand proclaimed the good news of your kingdomto the poor and to those in need.In all things he fulfilled your gracious will.On the night he freely gave himself to death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread, and when he had given thanks to you,he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat:this is my body which is given for you.Do this for the remembrance of me.”After supper he took the cup of wine;and when he had given thanks,he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you:this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for manyfor the forgiveness of sins.Whenever you drink it,do this for the remembrance of me.”Gracious God,his perfect sacrificedestroys the power of sin and death;by raising him to lifeyou give us life for evermore. Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith.

All Christ has died.Christ is risen.

14

Christ will come again.Priest Recalling his death,

proclaiming his resurrection, and looking for his coming again in glory,we offer you, Father, this bread and this cup.Send your Holy Spirit upon usand upon these gifts, that all who eat and drink at this tablemay be one body and one holy people,a living sacrifice in Jesus Christ, our Lord.Through Christ, with Christ, and in Christ,in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory is yours, almighty Father, now and for ever.

All Amen.Priest And now, as our Saviour Christ has taught us,

we are bold to say,All Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done,on earth as it is in heaven.Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses,as we forgive those who trespass against us.And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Priest Creator of all,you gave us golden fields of wheat, whose many grains we have gatheredand made into this one bread.

All So may your Church be gathered

15

from the ends of the earthinto your kingdom.

Priest The gifts of God for the people of God.All Thanks be to God.

Please rise as you are able for the Blessing

Priest The peace of God which passes all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord: and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always.

All Amen.We sing our final Hymn No. 575 in Common Praise.

1 Let streams of living justiceflow down upon the earth; give freedom's light to captives, let all the poor have worth. The hungry's hands are pleading, the worker's claim their rights, the mourners long for laughter, the blinded seek for sight.Make liberty a beacon, strike down the iron power, abolish ancient vengeance, proclaim your people's hour

2 For healing of the nations,for peace that will not end,for love that makes us lovers,God grant us grace to mend.Weave our varied gifts together,knit our lives as they are spun;

17

on your loom of time enroll ustill our thread of life is run.O great Weaver of our fabric, bind church and world in one;dye our texture with your radiance, light our colours with your sun.

3 Your city's built to music; we are the stones you seek;your harmony is language:we are the words you speak. Our faith we find in service, our hope in other's dreams, our love in hand of neighbour:our home land brightly gleams.Inscribe our hearts with justice;your way - the path untried;your truth - the heart of stranger, your life - the Crucified.
