DISTINGUISHED GENTLEMAN’S RIDE Hamilton 30 Sept 2018

The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride charity run was held in Hamilton on 30 th September, coinciding with nearly 600 other rides and around 100k riders in over 90 countries, including 9 other cities in NZ. Started in Australia in 2012, the theme of a charity ride involving getting dressed up in one’s finest faux-Edwardian style was inspired by a character in the TV series “Mad Men”. Bikes are encouraged to be genuine classics or modern retro style. Originally focussed on supporting prostate cancer work, there is now also support for men’s mental health issues.

The Hamilton ride began at 9:00 in Hamilton Gardens, with bikes of all ages assembling around the circular green. Weather was dry though mostly overcast. Some excellent classic bikes were on hand with several fine genuine café racers. A total of 219 riders registered and from the size of the crowd, nearly all turned up to ride. Outfits ranged from smart to seriously eccentric. Charity shops had provided many with good items of “dapper attire” while a few had gone as far as theatrical costume supplies.

After a briefing from the organisers, we departed at 10:30 and started out along Peachgrove to Chartwell, then back along the river. The briefing encouraged sensible riding with the aim of making a good impression on as many Hamilton citizens as we could drive past. To avoid the need to keep a leader in sight (not realistic with about 200 bikes of varying ages) marshalls were on hand at every junction where a left or right turn was needed, otherwise straight on. The police provided excellent support, hold back cross traffic at the busier roundabouts so that groups of biker could cross safely. After criss-crossing the town, we headed out to Matangi and thence to Pacific Aviation on Airport Road. PA kindly opened the apron outside their works to all the bikes, where we stopped for a break with coffee and live music on hand. They also opened up the aircraft assembly hall to show the whole manufacturing process of their latest aircraft, and brought a couple of planes outside so that the bikes were parked among them. I believe that skydiving is now a major market, requiring repeated rapid ascent and descent.

After a break, it was back on the bikes and meander into town via Peacocks Road and past the Lake domain. Hood Street was again closed off for the event with a live blues band on a small stage and several stalls trading on the pavement.

An excellent day out overall, with very good organisation evident. The Hamilton ride raised NZ$27k, while the global total was over US$6M. I can recommend it as a fun day out.
