Hurricane season begins June 1 and runs through November 30th.

Things to remember during the SEASON

First and Foremost: Establish a designated place to keep emergency supplies in your home so you’re not scrambling around to find them.

The Do’s

Make sure you have enough supplies for seven days. Start preparing as early as possible. Pick up an extra gallon of water every time you go to

the grocery store until you have 7 gallons per person –– 1 gallon per day for seven days. Buy non-perishable foods that are full of protein, like peanut butter, can soup & tuna, dry

cereal or granola, dried fruit, nuts etc… Get 5-gallon buckets with fitted lids from Home Depot, Walmart or similar stores. These

are great for storing electronics, batteries, chargers, important documents, medicines and food. Properly closing the lids on these buckets also allows them to float.

Establish a designated shelter area where you’ll keep emergency supplies in your home so you’re not scrambling around to find them.

Make an evacuation plan for everyone in your family to know where to meet in case anyone gets separated. Talk through the plan often so everyone is on the same page. DO NOT wait until an evacuation order is issued to create a plan. Failure to plan = planned failure.

Turn on emergency notifications on your mobile devices. Charge phones, laptops and iPad etc… place phone chargers in a zip lock bag. Keep an emergency escape tool in each of your vehicles. Have a surplus of zip lock bags Communicating with children about disasters can help alleviate stress.  Plan for pets  Floridadisaster.org offers advice for pet and livestock management

The Don’ts

Don’t let your car’s gas tank get below half-full at any point during the summer. Don’t think you know more than weather experts. Instead, listen to trained emergency

management officials, meteorologists and other leaders whose job it is to keep you informed and safe.

Don’t bother taping up your windows because it doesn’t reduce the risk of them blowing out.

Don’t drive through flooded streets, even if you’re very familiar with the street. A few inches of water can move a vehicle.

.Do you have all the items on this checklist? If Not! Hop On It !

TRAIL MIX FUN

programs which focus on:

Learning numbers is fun and letting kids be involved with packing their own snacks also sneaks in a little math practice too.

Gathering supplies for this project is quick and simple. First, write a different number in 6 cupcake liners and place them in a cupcake tin. Next, gather some of your kids’ favorite snacks: dried fruit, popcorn, pretzels, cheerios, etc.

Explain to your child that they are going to mix together some of their favorite snacks and make a trail mix. Ask them to fill each cup in the tin with the number of snacks written on the cupcake liner. Continue reading the liners and counting out a matching number of snacks for each one. Once all of the cups are full, dump all of the goodies together in a bowl or bag to create your yummy and delicious trail mix. Enjoy!

Changing Shadows

Experiments help children develop basic science skills like observing what is happening, using words to describe what they notice, and repeating the action to compare results. Questioning and posing answers are skills used every day in the classroom.

Try this shadow experiment with your child.

Explore sunlight and shadows and describe the effects of the sun or sunlight. Observe shadows of trees and other stationary objects in the morning (or even outline them with sidewalk chalk) and return in the afternoon to see if the shadows have moved or are different in some way.

Ask “what” and “why” questions to encourage inquiry. Point out that the position of the sun in the sky has appeared to change, but this appearance is really caused by the earth’s rotation around the sun. This changes the direction and size of the shadows.
