1 Charles Dickens was born in Landport, Portsmouth in 1812. 2 Charles was the second of eight children to John Dickens, a clerk3 in the Navy Pay Office, and his wife Elizabeth Dickens. The 4 Dickens family moved to London in 1814 and two years later to 5 Chatham, Kent, where Charles spent the early years of his 6 childhood. Due to the financial difficulties they moved back to 7 London in 1822, where they settled in Camden Town, a poor8 neighbourhood of London.

9 The defining moment of Dicken’s life occurred when he was 1210 years old. His father, who had a difficult time managing money11 and was constantly in debt, was imprisoned in Marshalsea12 debtor’s prison in 1824. Because of this, Charles was withdrawn13 from school and forced to work in a warehouse that handled14 ‘blacking’ or shoe polish to help support the family. At the 15 rundown, rodent-ridden factory, Dickens earned six shillings a 16 week labelling pots of ‘blacking’, a substance used to clean 17 fireplaces. Looking back on the experience, Dickens saw it as18 the moment he said goodbye to his youthful innocence, stating 19 ‘that he wondered how (he) could be so easily cast away at such20 a young age.’ He felt abandoned and betrayed by the adults who21 were supposed to take care of him. This experience left 22 profound psychological and sociological effects on Charles. It 23 gave him a first-hand acquaintance with poverty and made him 24 the most vigorous and influential voice of the working classes in25 his age.

26 After a few months Dicken’s father was released from prison and 27 Charles was allowed to go back to school. At fifteen his formal28 education ended and he found employment as an office boy at 29 an attorney’s while he studied shorthand at night. From 1830 he 30 worked as a shorthand reporter in the courts and afterwards as 31 a parliamentary and newspaper reporter.

32 In 1833, Dickens began to contribute short stories and essays to33 periodicals. A Dinner at Popular Walk was Dicken’s first 34 published story. Across the next twenty years, Dickens wrote35 several novels to include The Posthumous Papers of the 36 Pickwick Club (1836-1837), Oliver Twist (1837-39), Nicholas 37 Nickleby (1838-39), The Old Curiosity Shop and Barnaby Rudge38 (1840-41), American Notes (1842). A Christmas Carol followed39 in 1843.

40 Dickens married Catherine Hogarth in 1836 and together they 41 had 10 children before they separated in 1858.

42 Dicken’s popularity led to him completing a series of paid 43 readings, which became instantly popular. He spoke of his 44 opposition to slavery and expressed his support for additional 45 reform. In total, he performed more than 400 times and earned46 $95,000 which, in the Victorian era, amounted to approximately47 $1.5 million in current U.S. dollars. Dickens had become so 48 famous that people recognised him all over London. Despite 49 worsening health, Dickens continued to give numerous readings50 and during one reading, in 1860, he collapsed, showing 51 symptoms of mild stroke. He retreated to Gad’s Hill. Charles 52 Dickens died at home on June 9, 1870 after suffering a stroke. 53 He was buried in the Poets’ Corner of Westminster Abbey. The 54 inscription on his tomb reads:

55 He was a sympathiser to the poor, the suffering, and the 56 oppressed; and by his death, one of England’s greatest writers57 is lost to the world.
