Saving Lives, Creating Hope

IPASC is an organisation founded by Pat Nickson in 1992, which provides community health and training for community health workers in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The DR Congo is one of the poorest countries in the world. The UN statistics identify the DRC as having the highest deprivation in the world. IPASC works primarily in Aru district in the north east of the country, where most families have an income of less than 150 per year and life expectancy is 48. The government provides no funding for preventative health care and so IPASC has to raise every penny it spends. IPASC does stunning work and this is an opportunity to help them to support their local communities.

Trip to Arua

Gift: A Life Sustaining Journey

50 pays for a life-sustaining trip for people who are HIV positive to a hospital in Uganda. (There is no treatment for people needing anti retroviral medication in most of the DR Congo). 50 will pay for IPASC to take 10 people across the border to Arua in Uganda and sustain their treatment. Currently there is a long waiting list of people needing to make these regular trips.

Gift: A Weeks Food Distribution

10 pays for the weekly food distribution for HIV positive mums or those looking after children orphaned through HIV/AIDS. Folks come from all around on foot and by bicycle to collect food which keeps them going when families and communities have often ostracised them.

150 pays for a fresh water supply for a community. After malaria, water borne diseases are the biggest health problem 2,000 cases in the local health centre, last year. Yet 150 is enough to support the local community to create a fresh and clean water supply. The local community does the work with advice from IPASC. 150 pays for the materials needed. IPASC delivered 19 such water supplies last year. Their co-ordinator suggested they could deliver three times as many if the resources were available.

Gift: A fresh water supply

Gift: An Awareness Raising Trip

20 will pay for an awareness raising trip to outlying villages and rural communities where pre-natal care is very basic. The Safe Motherhood Programme involving both awareness raising and training has reduced the number of deaths of mothers at childbirth at one local hospital from 120 per year to less than five. But awareness raising is difficult there are no tarmac roads you travel by four wheel drive or by motorbike or bicycle, along mud tracks, sometimes in up to a foot of water. A 50 mile journey might take four hours. Yet the impact is profound.

Gift: Orphan support days

3 pays for an HIV/AIDS orphan to attend a fun and support day where they will have loads of fun, play games, get two nutritional meals, some teaching and a small gift. IPASC runs these days fortnightly and up to 200 orphaned children can attend.

Gift: Setting up a Micro-Financing Group

100 is the initial set up cost for a group and thereafter it becomes self-sustaining. Many people with HIV/AIDS are ostracised from their local communities and families and lose any means of sustaining themselves. IPASC has supported the creation of 30 small micro-financing groups where 30 people each contribute to their mini-bank and lend to each other so that they can start their own income generating activities i.e. the sale of peanuts or charcoal, to buy seeds or pay school fees etc.

How to purchase your gift

If you would like to purchase one of these gifts for yourself or on behalf of a friend or family member you can do this in one of three ways by cheque, by standing order/direct debit, or by credit/debit card on line. Details of these are on the accompanying page. We are keeping administration to a minimum so that every penny you give makes a difference. Everyone giving, or their nominee (if you are giving as a present for some-one) will get a photo of their money turned into action, and a thank you letter from both the Friends of IPASC Trust and from IPASC itself. If you are a UK tax payer, gift aiding the donation will increase the impact of your gift to IPASC by 25%.

If you (your church, your small group, or your workplace) would like to give more, there are some bigger projects which IPASC desperately needs funding for - please call Richard Williams (07980 826739) and wed be delighted to speak to you further.
