This is our third year as an International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme (MYP) School. One important part of the IB Programme is the Learner Profile. It emphasizes10 characteristics that can inspire, motivate and unite all stakeholders in achieving a common purpose.

Every month, one student per homeroom class will be nominated by teachers to be the “IB Star Student of the Month.” The student that is selected will be showcased on the IB Star Student Bulletin Board. This month’s IB

Learner Profile trait is “caring.” Ways you can strengthen caring skills at home:

Role model the caring behavior you would like to see in your child all the time. Using kind words, helping people without being asked, being an active listener, always show you care about people.

Practice random acts of kindness. Simple things like holding the door for someone or helping carry bags shows that you are aware of others

and want to help them.

Too often we underestimate the power of a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to

turn a life around.

During this past quarter your child has been adapting and applying the concepts of being an IB learner. Teachers have given your child different tasks to help him or her to discover and explore how learning can take place in any learning environment no matter what subject or language it is. Learning can take place when kids are given the chance to express and work together to accomplish a goal. At Johnnie Carr, this is what our kids do at school:

In Mrs. Lovett’s class, 7th grade Language Arts teacher, students were doing a “Grammar Rap.” They had to work as a team to create a presentation that showed a strong collaboration with an original form of learning the content and singing. Students had a lot of fun planning, practicing their lyric parts and coordinating the movements for their presentations.

In the Chinese class, students were learning how to say family membersin Chinese and how to write each word. They also did a family tree about theirfamily. Students are enjoying theopportunity of learning Chinese.

This work is a demonstration of the “Peace Building Workshop” that 6th and 8th graders participated on September 20th, 2016 in the library at Carr given by Natilee McGruder from McGruder and Associates. The workshop was based on how to gain peace within the schools, community and worldwide. Students brainstormed and came up with ideas to try and make the world a more peaceful place. At the end of the workshop, the students traced their hands to show how they are raising their hands for peace around the world; the students also wrote on a pledge card about some ways to show peace. This work is displayed by the front office.
