Unit & Lesson: English 3, Unit 3, Lesson 2

Objective: By the end of the lesson, Ss will be able to write a ‘chain story’ in groups, using sequencers and past-tense verbs.

Materials: “Pass the conversation” cards from Lesson 1, vocabulary cards (one per group), story pictures, paper (one for each S)

Warm-up (10 min)Play the “Pass the conversation” game again, but designate several Ss as the Teacher and Monitors. While Ss play, T should check homework.

Vocabulary presentation (10 min)Put Ss into groups.

Tell Ss, “Today, we’re going to start with verbs.” Write a sentence on the board:

I go to school every day.

Ask Ss, “Where’s the verb?” Underline it when they give it to you:

I go to school every day.

Ask Ss, “What’s ‘go’ in Mongolian?” Write it on the board and underline it:

явах   I go to school every day.

Write “Yesterday” on the board:

явах   I go to school every day. Yesterday,

Ask Ss, “How should we change this sentence, if we use ‘yesterday?’” Write on the board and underline the verb:

явах   I go to school every day. Yesterday, I went to school.

Show Ss a set of vocabulary cards and tell them, “Now I’m going to give you these cards. You should match them like the sentences on the board: Mongolian, base verb, and past tense.” Hand out the cards; monitor the groups and provide corrective feedback; when a group is finished, have them copy the Mongolian verbs, base verbs, and past tense sentences into their notebooks.

Grammar Presentation/Practice (10 min)Tell Ss, “Now, let’s write a story about what happened yesterday to Ganaa. We’ll use our new verbs, and some words to tell a story.” Write a title on the board:

What Ganaa Did Yesterday

Write the sequencers underneath (once you start writing them, see if Ss can guess what comes next):What Ganaa Did Yesterday

To begin with, Next, After that, Finally,

Under each sequencer, put a story picture:What Ganaa Did Yesterday

To begin with, Next, After that, Finally,

Give Ss 5 minutes to write the story in their notebooks. Check answers as a class. T should write the complete sentences on the board as Ss offer them. (To begin with, Ganaa got up at 7:00. Next, she had breakfast. After that, she finished her homework. Finally, she went to school.)

Production (10 min)Give each S a blank piece of paper. Ask Ss to write a title at the top of the page: What __________ did yesterday. Encourage them to choose somebody creative for their title!

Tell Ss they have one minute to write the first sentence of their story, using “To begin with” and one of today’s verbs. After one minute is up, Ss will rotate papers in their groups and write the next sentence in the story, using “Next,” and one of the verbs. After another minute is up, Ss will rotate again, etc. T may want to model doing this on her own piece of paper.

T should keep time and call out “switch!” T should circulate, provide corrective feedback, and encourage Ss to use some of their new verbs.

If time permits, T should tell Ss to keep writing and passing, using “Next” and “After that” over and over.

HomeworkSs should keep whatever piece of paper they have at the end of class. They should copy the story into their notebooks, correcting any mistakes.
