Day 1 for the delegates of the Security Council was rather confusing, as they were still not well acquainted with THIMUN procedure. However, day 2 started on a much better note.

The alert and well -informed delegate of Argentina called out the delegation of the USA in their speech earning the deserved applause as well as candy from the president. The deputy president was impressed by the committee that he ended up throwing candy at the ceiling rather than to the delegate of Brazil. To wrap up the streak of delegates who received candies for raising excellent points of information was the delegate of France. The delegate received not one but three candies and a roaring applause from the council.

Confusion in Committee?

Even though the delegate of Poland was still unfamiliar with committee procedures, the chairs continued to lend a helping hand explaining procedure. Poland received applause for speaking up despite putting forward an invalid question. Just before break, the committee was failing to function as they were looking forward to the break after an intense session of debate. While voting, it seemed like only one delegate was “for” the amendment but 25 seconds later, 8 delegates raised their placards in support. This led to the chairs asking the delegates to focus for just a while more.

Without much ado, the committee began its second day with the discussion concerning the resolution. The air was buzzing with excessive excitement and the room was blatantly eager to get through the agenda.

The meagre amount of two votes could lead to the elimination of the United States of America’s resolution entirely, and so the discussion was already getting heated when the chair decided that a little more spice to the dish, wouldn’t pose harm to anyone. To do so, the supposed delegate of Djibouti was introduced, impersonated by our loving President of the General Assembly, followed by the moderator of the JCC-2. Within the span of mere thirty seconds, the moderator picked out three faults in the resolution and would have probably picked out more if it wasn’t for the time lapse.

The day was then followed by the unfortunate scrapping of not only one but two resolutions of the delegates of The United States of America and Syria respectively. A quick recovery was made with the introduction of two new resolutions based on the problems concerning cyber terrorism. Clearly everybody seemed to be on an adrenaline rush during the session which caused a few loses but more importantly many gains.

Ukrainian Delegation Crisis

The second day brought with it renewed hope. Lobbying time started off with enthusiasm and some adherence to the rules, on the part of the delegates, as they planned to rush through the remainder of the agenda of the first day, and continue with that of the second, for the better part of the day. The committee jumped into session, dealing with Ukraine’s well thought-out resolution for the Syrian Refugee Crisis, with relatively more participation from the delegates of several countries, but not much from those of the Middle-Eastern ones, ironically enough. The delegates of Ukraine confidently answered any questions posed to them, and showing no signs of uneasiness on account of a disturbing threat they received from certain infuriated delegates of Pakistan, who did not hold back in their chit – promising to declare war on Ukraine, and blow up their land and “posteriors”, should they refuse to retract or amend a clause in their resolution. Ukraine’s resolution took up more than half the session time, leaving less for the actual agenda of the day.

Positive Turn Around

Although it started off a little shaky the second day was definitely a step up from the mundane series of events that took place on the first day. The lobbying time was transient and quickly morphed into Ukraine tabling their former resolution. But the delegation of Syria chose to remain mum and be mere onlookers as the rest engaged in speculative debate. At some point, the chairs threw up their hands in defeat, when the delegate of Ukraine passed on a virus infiltrated drive to them, and made them question whether their delegates bore them ill-feeling. During the latter part of the session however they broke their silence and finally spoke up to support a clause. All in all the delegates took on a more heuristic approach.

The first half of the day was just calm before the storm, well a storm of debate that is. The second half was filled with intellectual decisions, informative points and heated discussions, he issue on everybody’s mind being the resolution submitted by the delegates of Germany and China. Despite this, the detailed resolution was only discussed for a miniscule part of the day. Points of information raised by the moderator on behalf of the delegate of Sweden, received unsynchronized drumming on the table. After extensive debate and rhetorical responses, the resolution was passed. As a celebration, a motion for entertainment was passed, much to the delight of the delegates, press members and members of administration alike.

A COMPLETE TURN AROUND!

Rishima Shetty

By the end of the first day, the Assad committee started living up to its reputation by bombing a city. The delegates were finally being pro-active.

The second day began with an update from the rebels. The previously passive delegates began speaking up. The delegate of Syria was utterly confused about his stance and spoke “for” as well as “against” the same amendment within a span of five minutes. Things mellowed down, but a threat from USA spiced things up. The delegates began to draft a plan of action. While the committee was busy planning, the President of the People’s Republic of China was kidnapped. Enraged by this action, David Cameron switched loyalties to the Assads. This was actually just a deception by the rebels as the delegate of UK had been leaking information to them.

The second day was a definite improvement as the silence was replaced by debates. Two directives were passed by unanimous votes too.

A Big Boom in the JCC room!

Zara Humranwala

Things were extremely interesting in committee today, the Prince of Saudi Arabia was kidnapped and then forced to commit suicide in a suicide bombing in America. The shocking part was that neither the committee nor his father- King Salman Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud took any measures to save him. Instead, they sat debating on how they would kidnap the sister of Bashar Al Assad which was pretty much pointless. To get the committee to understand the gravity of the situation and take effective action, the Deputy President had to sit in committee as the Delegate of Mossad and he gave the others a witty idea to attack territories of the Assad Cabinet using e-bombs to technologically paralyze them.

All of a sudden, things took a huge turn. A man with a black plastic bag over his head entered the room, which made everyone laugh at first but were then shocked when his identity was revealed. The delegate of the Republic of China staged a plan to get himself kidnapped and became one of the most active members of the Rebel Cabinet. We still can’t figure out whose side he is on but it looks like the only solution is to trust him! Agitated by his presence in committee, the Delegate of UK decided to leave this committee and join the Assad Cabinet.

We then received news that due to previous action taken by President Barrack Obama, to use biological weapons to capture Al-Safira, the Congress impeached their President and held elections where Donald Trump was elected as the new President of USA. This is when we’re thankful that this is just “Model” United Nations!

I think we could clearly say that today the Rebel cabinet constantly had pointless discussions about just attacking places but did not take any effective action. Instead they waited for crisis’ to come in from the other cabinet. For all we know, at this point the other cabinet could be bombing areas of our cabinet but the delegates haven’t taken any measures to protect or defend themselves.

A Way With Words.

The Assad Cabinet fired a nuke on the United States of America, delegates battled for candy and anonymous threats were made via chits and who better to inform the rest of the conference about these events than the Journalism Team. All the journalists seated in the various committees couldn’t help but listen with rapt attention as debate and discussion picked up on the second day.

They scribbled along their rough pages, in notes that only they could decipher, until they scurried off to finally compile their notes into an impeccably worded article. Joining forces with the Photography Team, they relayed the contents of their articles until they found the picture that fit in with the words they’d written.

A Myriad of Colour.

As the second day of the Scottish Model United commenced, our Photography Team were greeted with a myriad of colour. The dress code for Day 2 happened to be Indian formals and while the usual Western formals tend to become a little monotonous because the multitude were in shades of blue, black and grey, the vibrancy of the saris and kurtas were a treat for our photographers. The downside to this was nothing other than, due to the captivating beauty of all the pictures we receive, the selection process so much harder. Short listing the pictures became a Herculean task, taken on by our Head of Photography, until she finally managed to come up with the few that best encompass the day.
