FACULTY MEETINGS/AFTERSCHOOL MEETINGSAll afterschool meetings will be held on Mondays. (There will be situations from time to time that require meetings on days other than Mondays.) Do not plan Doctor’s appointments, parent meetings, other employment responsibilities…on Mondays. All employees, certified and classified are required to attend faculty meetings.

PTO and PTO EVENTSAll employees, certified and classified, are required to attend all PTO meetings. All employees are required to attend and participate in Harvest Carnival and other afterschool events as determined by principal.

ACCIDENT REPORTSIn case of accidents (staff or student), an ACCIDENT REPORT must be promptly made and filed. Parents of students must be contacted and noted on the accident form. Name and address if the injured party, the activity in which the injury occurred, and the date, hour and place. The person(s) supervising the student when the accident occurs is responsible for completing the accident report. The cause and extent of the injury should be noted on the form as well as the names and statements of witnesses. Any type of medical attention should also be noted on the form (band aid, ice, wash…)

DRESS CODETeachers and Teacher Assistants are expected to dress appropriately for a professional work environment. Teachers should not wear shorts on days that students are in attendance. Fridays will be dress down days on which jeans may be worn. On teacher workdays, teachers may dress down and wear shorts, however teachers should keep in mind that parents and students may visit the school on workdays and some degree of thought should go into your attire on workdays. Dress code situations will be dealt with by the administration as needed. When on fieldtrips, appropriate attire should be worn with consideration given to the type of fieldtrip and destination. You are a reflection of Rex-Rennert Elementary.

FIELD TRIPSAll school sponsored activities:

Must have a faculty sponsor Must be supervised by the sponsor at all times or an alternate approved by the principal Must be approved in advance by the principal Must be planned thoroughly by the sponsor prior to requesting the principal’s approval

A Field Trip Request form and a copy of the Proposed School Sponsored Trip Information from Home form (permission slip) must be completed and submitted to the principal. Requests must be submitted at least 10 school days prior to the activity. When planning a fieldtrip, consideration should be given to the cost of the trip and the timing of the trip in order to allow all students the opportunity to participate. Charter buses used for field trips must be on the PSRC approved list. A copy of the contract and approved purchase order must be presented to the principal one week prior to the trip. Charter buses do not leave campus with students prior to an inspection by the transportation department.

BULLETIN BOARDSNeat bulletin boards are a valuable teaching tool to students. Each teacher should maintain appropriate and up-to-date bulletin boards at all times. Current student work should also be displayed at all times (in the classroom and in hallways when a display method is possible).

CAFETERIAThe cafeteria staff is not authorized to provide carry out service, or to give portions that exceed those given to the students. Teachers are responsible for their conduct and the conduct of any students in the cafeteria. Teachers have the responsibility to pay for their lunches. The level of noise in the cafeteria should be low. There will be no food taken out of the cafeteria by students, including snacks.

PARENT/TEACHER CONFERENCES

Parent conferences should be scheduled during your planning or before or after school. Conferences should never be help while supervising students. A brief record should be kept of such conferences. All parental contacts (written, phone calls, emails, conferences, texts…) should be documented. Always keep a copy of any correspondences or other documents to or from parents. Teacher Assistants should not conference with parents about educational issues. The TA should defer to the Teacher when educational issues come up in conversations with the parent or guardian. Occasionally there are situations when it is appropriate for a TA to conference with a parent such as when a TA witnesses an event. It is always inappropriate to discuss another student during the conference.

CONTACTING CENTRAL OFFICE

Teachers wanting to confer with the Superintendent must first inform the principal. This is the proper chain of command.

Additionally, all employees should check with the principal BEFORE contacting payroll, human resources and so forth. The principal may be able to be of assistance in the matter.

DUPLICATING/COPYING Duplicating machines are located in the teacher workroom and are for teacher use. Each teacher will be assigned a designated number of copies for the copiers. Do not ask the office staff to make copies for you. Once you have exhausted all your allotted copies for the 9 weeks, you will not be given additional copies.

FACULTY WORKROOMPlease be considerate of the classes that are in the media center while you are in the workroom.

Assist in keeping the workroom presentable by depositing drink cans, wrappers, waste paper, etc. in the waste cans. Students are not permitted in the workroom either for duplicating or other purposes.

FIRE ALERTFire Drills

A fire drill will be held the first week of school and once a month thereafter. A fire exit map must be posted by the door in each room. The signal for a fire or fire drill will be the successive ringing of the alarm bell. Fire alarm

alternate will be notification by use of the intercom. Close all windows and doors Ensure that your students march out orderly and quickly. Do not allow your students to get

water or use the restroom while going out or returning. Also, stay with your class and make sure that you are away from the building and out of fire lanes.

The grade book should be taken with you along with your class roll. Check roll and account for all students.

The all-clear signal is one long bell.

FIRST AID (STUDENT)It is the responsibility of the principal, teachers, and other employees of the school to provide for the safety of the students in all instances, both with proper precautionary measures and proper supervision. If injuries or illnesses do occur during school hours:

The school will attempt to contact the student's parent.

In the event that the parents cannot be contacted immediately, and if there is reason to believe that the student should receive medical attention, it becomes the responsibility of the principal to see that the student receives immediate medical aid.

The principal should either transport the student to the hospital or to the doctor, or make arrangements for the student to be transported. In case of injury or illness and where the parents cannot be located, the principal must rely upon his own judgment but should take no chances. He may become legally responsible if he does not act.

Once the principal takes the student to the doctor or hospital, the physician or hospital staff assumes responsibility for the student's welfare. The principal shall not sign for an operation or medical care for a student.

It is recommended that someone who is readily accessible in the school shall be trained in first aid through an approved course.

A teacher shall not administer aspirin or any other medication as may be provided in Policy JGCD-R.

night or taken home. Also, cumulative records should not be in the room when students are present.

DAILY ATTENDANCE Good attendance is essential to the academic success of students. Though assignments missed can often be made up, much insight is lost when a student misses class.

To be considered in attendance for the day, a student must be present in the school for at least one half of the school day (11:30) or at a place other than the school with the approval of the appropriate school official to attend an authorized school activity. These activities include:

Field trips sponsored by the school. School-initiated and scheduled activities.

Teachers should not hold a student out of another teachers’ class or request that a student miss another teachers’ class. The number of times that a student misses class for school-sponsored activities should be kept to an absolute minimum. The principal shall closely scrutinize and monitor such absences. Any assignments missed by a student as a result of involvement in school-sponsored activities shall be completed by the student and are due on the day the student returns to class, unless additional time is granted by the classroom teacher. Ref: NCAC 16-6E 0101.

Excessive absences should be reported to the Social Worker for investigation.

All grade levels should use the white Report Card Envelope to send report cards home. Parents must sign and return the white Report Card Envelope to teachers. This is documentation of parental contact. Report cards will be distributed during the last 10 minutes of the school day.

HOMEWORK If homework is to be assigned, it should be meaningful. This means it should be relative to the objectives of the subject. In so far as possible, homework assignments, like class assignments, should be individualized. Appropriate follow-up activities, grading or review of homework assignments should always occur. Students be assigned homework nightly. Consideration should be given to the amount of homework student have in other subjects.

Minutes should be kept in a grade level notebook.

TEACHER ABSENCES/ SUBSTITUTE TEACHERSWhen it becomes impossible for a teacher to report to work, he or she should CREATE AN ABSENCE in Smartfind as soon as the situation develops. Delaying creating this absence may result in a classroom with no substitute. Absences on Fridays should be non-existent. However, if planned well in advance, a substitute may be found in time. Last minute substitutes on Fridays cannot be secured. Teachers are not to get their own substitutes. Smartfind will contact the substitute of your choosing first. It is the responsibility of the teacher to leave detailed instructions for the substitutes that includes:

Seating Chart Lunch Schedule Bell Schedules Emergency Plans Class Schedules Class Rules Duty Assignments Attendance Procedures

If teacher absences become a problem (10 instructional days with or without a medical excuse), the principal will address the attendance issue with the employee to determine the best possible solution.

CLASSROOM CODE OF CONDUCT

The teacher is responsible for maintaining discipline in the classroom at all times. ONLY Class II and Class III offenses should be sent immediately to the office. Class I offenses should be handled through the before a Discipline Referral is made to administration. Class I offenses

should be handles by the teacher using all available resources (parental contact, PBIS strategies, student/teacher conferences…).

CLASS I OFFENSESClass I Offenses include, but are not necessarily limited to the following violations:

Inappropriate actions Being in an unauthorized area Cheating/lying Class disruption Dress code violations Failure to follow classroom rules. Failure to follow proper sign in/out

GUIDELINES FOR WRITING DISCIPLINE REFERRALS

The following guidelines should help you in completing Student Discipline Referral. Well written documents can assist in the timely, accurate, and consistent processing of discipline referrals.

Provide appropriate information Include all pertinent information on the referral including student’s proper name, grade,

date of incident, time, and teacher name. If any other students are involved or are witnesses, include their names on a separate piece of paper or email to the principal. DO NOT PUT OTHER STUDENTS’ NAMES ON THE REFERRAL!

o Example: “Billy punched another student on the nose”. Write the victim’s name on another piece of paper)

o Indicate any preventions taken prior to writing the referral. Be specific about the intervention(s) used for this particular incident or type of incident.

o When profane or obscene language is used in an incident, indicate exactly what was said using quotation marks where necessary.

o Bad: “Billy said the S-word and the F-word” (During the investigation, it was determined that Billy said “Stupid Fart”)

Narrative The narrative (the section which explains in writing what occurred) is the most

important section of the referral. If legal action is pursued, the narrative will be the focal point of the inquiry, not codes or checks. Strive to create a well written document.

The FactsFactual

Write the facts, not the opinions Bad: “That boy Billy was very disruptive. I don’t want him back in my classroom until he

learns how to behave. (This is demanding and doesn’t say what Billy did) Good: “Billy slapped another student in the face with a book”

Actual Write what you actually witnessed or what was actually reported to you Bad: “Billy must have hit another student in the face since the student’s nose was

bleeding (didn’t witness the hit and drawing conclusions) Good: “It was reported by several students that Billy punched the student in the nose”

(attach other students’ names with a sticky note or email to the principal)Concise

Be brief and to the point (only state the facts) Bad; “Billy is disruptive again! Every day he does something in my class that disrupts my

teaching! His behavior has convinced the class and me that he has no desire to learn! Don’t let him back in my class until his mother comes in for a conference (long, opinionated and demanding and didn’t say what Billy did)

Good: “Billy threw a book across the room for the 4th day in a row” (Note: indicate interventions attempted for this incident on referral)

Timely Submit discipline referrals as soon as behavior intervention efforts have been

exhausted. Long delays or holding referrals for future misbehaviors creates difficulty when disciplining the student and/or eliciting support from parents.

Bad: “ September 4, Billy threw paper wads in class today; October 12, Billy talked out of turn repeatedly today. November 3, BILLY WAS DISRUPTIVE AGAIN TODAY!”

Good: “ Billy threw paper wads in class today. This is the third day this has happened.” If prior interventions have been unsuccessful, the teacher may want to submit this as a referral.

Sensible Use discipline referrals only as a last resort. Utilize all interventions possible prior to

writing a discipline referral. When one writes a discipline referral, he/she has admitted that he/she has not been successful with other interventions available with the student for this incident. NOTE: The exception to this would be documenting a serious incident that requires immediate attention from an administrator (i.e. fighting, drugs, weapons). Fighting is NOT defined as pushing and shoving. Fighting involves two or more individuals who have the intent of inflicting harm to the other party. One student hitting another student is not fighting. One hit is not a fight.

Bad: “Billy refused to take his test today. He didn’t bring a pencil to class either! (not a discipline problem)

Remember, Student discipline referrals are a final intervention. Solving behavioral issues without administrative intervention assists in creating a more

positive learning environment and sends the message that the teacher is in control in the classroom.

Constant use of discipline referrals diminished the teacher’s effectiveness in the classroom as students realize the teacher’s authority is limited.

Consider what was occurring in the classroom 10-15 minutes before the disciplinary incident. Sometimes changing OUR patterns can assist in decreasing inappropriate behaviors.

Example: Students continue to “horseplay” at the beginning of the period just before and after the beginning of class. Consider a timed quiz, activity or bell assignment as an everyday routine that is self-directed for students. The students should begin the activity immediately upon entrance into the classroom and focus on completing the activity in the allotted time.

FORMS

All necessary forms can be accessed by logging in to Rex-Rennert Elementary’s website. This can be done by clicking on the sign-in tab at the bottom of our homepage.

GRADING CRITERIAA grading criteria for grades 3-5 will be developed jointly by the teachers of grades 3-5.

DISPLAYING OBJECTIVESObjectives for each subject should be displayed to the right of the smartboard. This consistency will ensure that evaluations and 3 minute walk throughs are accurate.

CLASSROOM SCHEDULESDaily schedules should be posted on the handle side of the door at eye level. Schedules should be updated as necessary throughout the school year. The format is located on the school website. Please do not change the format.

WORDWALLEach classroom should have a “working” wordwall. New vocabulary should be added as the terms are introduced. The terms should remain on the wall the entire year. This word wall should be referenced throughout the day, week and year as a review tool.

WEEKLY NEWSLETTERNewsletters should be sent home weekly. This is a parent contact so make sure you use this opportunity to keep them informed. This newsletter should be in your lesson plan book with your lesson plans.
