Academic Search Premier

Purpose – to find peer-reviewed, scholarly articles to support your argument. You will no longer be using (or citing from) sites such as: Wikipedia, Google, BrainyQuote, etc.

PERKS: You will be able to save, download, print, email a full .pdf of an article. You will also have an easy link to cite your sources on your Works Cited Page.

Two Different Paths to Get to Academic Search Premier

1. If you are at school, go to the Kinard website. Hover over “School Info” and choose “Resources.”

On the “Resources” screen, choose “Media Center.” Then choose “Online Research and Databases.” Choose “Explora.” Choose “EBSCOHost Research Databases.” There will be a list of databases to choose from. Scroll down and choose “Academic Search Premier.”

2. If you are at home, you will not have access to Kinard’s online databases. Instead, you will need to visit the Poudre River Public Library District’s website. To access the database, you must have a Poudre River Public Library card. It will ask you for your last name and barcode number. Once you have entered that information, you are in Academic Search Premier

How to Find Articles

Type in any search term. Remember, if you type in Twelfth Night, you will get articles that include the word “twelfth” and articles that include the word “night.” When you want words to be searched together, enter in your search term in quotation marks: e.g. “Twelfth Night.” Even then, you will find thousands of articles about the play. Add more terms to narrow down your search.

IMPORTANT! You MUST limit your search to full text articles that are peer-reviewed.

On the left side of the screen, you will see:

Peer-Reviewed Articles are written by experts and are reviewed by several other experts in the field before the article is published in the journal to insure the article's quality. This is quite different than Wikipedia, where anyone can post. Full text articles will offer you a FREE, downloadable .pdf of the article itself.

When you click on “.PDF Full Text,” you will see a screen like this:

From this screen, you can read your article, you can download and save it, you can even print it. On the right-hand side of the screen, you will see two icons that are incredibly important. The first one is the “email” icon. This allows you to email your article to yourself. The second one is used for citing. There are many different associations that have vastly different ways of presenting your work in a professional format. You will need to scroll down to “MLA.” Once there, just copy and paste that citation on to your Works Cited Page

We will be working with Academic Search Premier in class . . . but you will never want to use another search engine again!
