Review from Echoing the Word Vol 15 No 3 : Care of our Common Home is a document that places Pope Francis’ encyclical, Laudato Si’, firmly in the hands of Australians. This reading guide uses a variety of reflection questions and additional materials to support an exploration of the encyclical. The prayer, the Canticle of Creation is used as the basis of the document. Each chapter poses a series of questions and reflections to challenge the reader to look at their own behaviours and attitudes, and those of our government and nation, and address these in practical ways. Some examples of these challenges include ; What does Pope Francis mean by a “throwaway culture”? What steps am I taking to reduce and recycle in my home or workplace? (School?) A true “ecological debt” exists, particularly between the global north and south, Pope Francis writes (LS 51). What does he mean? In addition to the questions, a variety of feature articles explore how various Australians have taken steps, within their influence, to preserve the environment. A particularly inspiring example for students is an article about some young Australian professionals who used solar technology to improve the living conditions and employment of those suffering poverty in India. Naturally, through the photographs and an article, indigenous Australians are highlighted as people who lived in harmony with the land and nature, and maintained a relationship with the land, which allowed it to heal and renew itself. Teaching Ideas: A school environmental group could use the document as a source of prayer and reflection and perhaps focus on one section of the encyclical annually. Secondary students could use the document to create a summary of the encyclical and rewrite the reflection questions for a younger audience. For example senior Catholic Studies students could do this for a Year 9, a Year 7 or a Year 4 class. Catechists or RE teachers could use one or more sections of the document as professional development in a meeting, retreat or reflection day.

Echoing the Word review Vol 15 No 3

Mrs Dog is a heart-warming story of the development of an unusual but precious bond between an old sheep dog and an orphaned lamb. Mrs Dog, no longer able to do her duties as a sheep dog, fills her days chasing shadows and wandering around the farm. On one of her wanderings she finds a tiny lamb lying still and alone in the paddock.

“Leave it, Mrs Dog,” called Tall-One.“It’s too small and weak to live.” But Mrs Dog carried the little Woolly-Head to the Big Kennel.

Mrs Dog names the lamb Baa-rah and takes care of her. The day comes when Baa-rah needs to be taken out to learn about the world. Mrs Dog tries to teach Baa-rah how to pounce, belly-crawl and bark; but most importantly where not to go, especially not to the Dangerous Place.

Days later after their usual wandering, Mrs Dog leaves Baa-rah to return to the kennel but is attacked by magpies and falls over the edge down into the Dangerous Place. Hours pass and Baa-rah searches everywhere for Mrs Dog.

Trembling Baa-rah crept towards the Dangerous Place.Closer. Closer. Closer. And then… His heart pounded.

Baa-rah returns to the farm house. He must find help; he must be understood; try to bark and be heard…

The feelings of nurture, protection, loyalty, devotion, trust and such like are all key characteristics of strong relationships and it is important that children are intentionally and explicitly taught about these qualities. Mrs Dog is an ideal story that affords such intentional exploration in a warm, tender and sensitive manner.

THIS IS A WELCOME to country : Wurundjeri Country (not an acknowledgement but could be adapted)

Summary: Welcome to the traditional lands of the Wurundjeri People. We are part of this land and the land is part of us. This is where we come from. Aunty Joy Wandin Murphy is a most respected senior Wurundjeri elder of the Kulin alliance. This is a very accessible welcome that introduces and gives meaning and explanation within the text to the customs and symbols of Indigenous Australia. Aboriginal communities across Australia have boundaries that are defined by mountain ranges and waterways. Traditionally, to cross these boundaries or enter community country you needed permission from the neighbouring community. When this permission was granted the ceremony now called Welcome to Country took place. Each community had its own way of welcoming to country, and they still do today. (Books in Print)

Mines (Explosives) Courage Prayer and actionSocial Justice

Landmines, the hidden menace left behind in war torn countries ensure the destruction of war never ends. One Step at a Time explores many issues of which most Australian children are oblivious – the ever presence of landmines.A strong bond exists between Luk and his baby elephant, Mali. Luk was much more than Mali’s keeper, he loved her like a sister.Mali raised her trunk and stepped forward to reach for the sweetest bananas, “BOOM!”The jungle fell deathly still and silent. And then voices shouted, “Landmine! Landmine!”Luk looked up, walked carefully, as he had been taught, to the clearing where Mali lay, cradled her and begged her not to die. Mali was carted to the hospital; Luk rushed off to the temple and lit a candle. The monks walked reverently to Mali’s enclosure, prayed over her and blessed her with holy water.

Page 16: sandhurstlibrarians.weebly.comsandhurstlibrarians.weebly.com/uploads/7…  · Web view · 2016-08-16Review from Echoing the Word Vol 15 No 3 : Care of our Common Home is a document

Mali grew stronger and finally was ready to stand and walk, only to stumble and fall. She was measured and fitted with a plastic leg.“Come on! Follow me! Just like this Mali, one step at a time,” said Luk and he led Mali out of the enclosure. So many issues can be explored in this story: friendship between a boy and an animal, the universal faith in prayer and religion, the two sides of humanity, on the one hand its deepest empathy in reaching out to help those in pain, but on the other its bleakest malevolence ensuring that pain is ever-present.
