TOTAL POSSIBLE POINTS 100

*Finding research. You can Google and search for a famous person in your field. If Wikipedia comes up – you can only look at the page and scroll down at the bottom to find other sites to go through. Usually if the person is famous they will have a biography page with information on it to use. You will need to cite the location of the information on the bottom of your poster. So find 1 good site and stick with it.

How do I do that?Helpful how-to information to guide you through the project. Please leave this paper at your computer.

How to:Open up Publisher and Start Project – go to the windows bubble in the bottom left corner of screen. Type the word publisher and select program to open. When it opens, you want to make sure on the left hand top you are in the ‘publication types’ section. You are going to pick, ‘blank pages’. And you can either select A4 Landscape or A4 Portrait. These are the only two you can select. We will explore more options later in the course. A4 means it is regular paper size and is recognized by Microsoft as such.

Save your document (finished or working) – There are two ways you will save this document. The final finished save will be in addition to the working save and you will do this when you have finished the project completely. REMEMBER, you must always save your document to your S drive(#). DO NOT save the file in my documents. Each time you have finished working on your document you MUST SAVE on your S drive. Go to File, Save As (the first time)/Save (the other times), and when the box opens up, make sure on the far left you change the location of where you will save by opening up Computer and selecting S123456 (your number), make the file name your name and famous person like this and click save.

Christine Pointer_Laura Bush(Your Name _ Name of Famous Person)

When saving the final file you will save both as a working file (like before) AND as a final JPEG file. To do this you will change the file type (in the save box) to JPEG with the drop down box. Save the file with the same file name as before. If you changed the file type to JPEG it won’t ask you to replace. If it asks you to replace, go back and save the file as a JPEG.

*Save as a working file first, then as a final JPEG file.*Save final JPEG in drop box when done

A JPEG file is one that can’t be changed once saved and stands for File Interchange Format and is a way to condense (make smaller) the file, but still keep everything on the file. If you were going to send this poster as an email or print, you would save it as a JPEG first. Sometimes pictures are saved as JPEG files so they don’t use so much space

Insert Word Art Title – You should have a long drop down box on your page once you get started. See the titled capital letter A in blue? Select that and type in your Title. You can alter how it looks while in this program. After you insert – if you want to go back and changed colors, fonts, sizes, etc. just double click on the word art and a simple editing box will pop up. If you right click on the word art you can format word art (change colors by clicking on the paint box).

Insert a Text Box – You will have to insert many text boxes into this project. To insert, go to Insert Tab up top and select Text Box when it drops down. You will get all sorts of options. Just pick the first one and you can alter it later.

Format Background – You will need to add a background to your document. To do this, just go to Format tab up top and select background. Work through your options and pick your best one. Remember – the darker the background the more difficult it might be to see writing – don’t go too extreme.

How to change the background of a text box – This is easy. Just double click the created text box and a fun box with lots of tabs will pop up. Play around with the box, creating new colors, changing lines and the weight of the line. Figure out what looks best and stick to that same color scheme throughout the project.

*change the transparency of the fill box with your bullets – this will keep it in the color scheme you choose, but not make it so dark so people can see what you wrote.

Re-size a Picture – When you want to size a picture, drag from the corners. Do NOT drag from top, bottom or sides as this will distort picture.

Bullets are not numbers – DO NOT number your facts. Use the bullet box at the top to select bullets for your facts. Facts in bullet form do not and most likely should not be complete sentences. They should be short, to the point, facts listed in chronological order (1st to last).
