compare – when you compare, you find out which set has more or fewer things. Compare the strawberries and apples:

Chapter 5 – Vocabulary

times or multiply – put all the equal groups together. There are 4 groups and 3 strawberries in each group.

4 X 3 = 12

There are 12 strawberries in all.

equal – having the same amount or number

3 = 2 + 1

3 is the same as 2 + 1

group or equal groups – having the same amount in each group. You add equal groups to multiply. You subtract equal groups to divide.

2 x 4 = 8

8 2 = 4

There are 4 red marbles in each group.

repeated addition – you can use repeated addition to find the number of marbles.

3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 12

Groups of 3 are added 4 times.

multiplication sentence – 3 x 3 = 9 is a multiplication sentence

There are 15 buttons in all.

There are 3 children. Each child has 5 buttons.

share – divide into equal groups

divide – put into equal groups or share equally

15 apples is divided into 3 equal groups of 5

division sentence – 6 2 = 3 is a division sentence

repeated subtraction – you can use repeated subtraction to find the number of groups.
