Unit C: From Life to
LifestyleWhat you will learn:
- How the microscope was developed and its history
- What the differences are between plant cells and animal cells
- About various cell structures and their functions
- How the cell theory developed and its components
BUT WHO CARES????:
- Each cell has the potential to become a complete organism. Have you heard of cloning? Scientists are using this and other techniques to learn more about cells. What they are learning today may help grow a new limb for you in the future – or prolong your life.
Cell Theory
- The ________ is the smallest unit of life and is the building blocks of all living organismso Cells are made up of small units called _____________________
Organelles are made up of __________________________ Molecules are made up of __________________ (Can be both living
and non-living)

Organisms
A little history:
- The first person to see individual cells and give them that name was __________________________________________
o Hooke looked at samples of _______________________________o He used a microscope to look at the cork and said that he could see little pockets
that looked like roomso He called the little rooms __________________ which means small room. (JUST
LIKE A JAIL CELL)
The Cell theory:
1. All living organisms are made up of ___________________________2. Cells are responsible for the _____________ and _____________ in all living organisms3. All cells are reproduced from other __________________________________
Organisms :
• Organisms can be made of _______________________ ( unicellular organism )
• E.g. amoeba, bacteria
• Organisms can be made of _______________________ ( multicellular organism )
• E.g. Squirrel, dogs
Plant and animal cell structures:
• Plant and animals cells carry out life processes because of their organelles
• Some organelles are common to both plants and animals
• E.g. __________________________ (this is the control center)
• Some organelles are not common to both
• E.g. __________________________ (plants use this to make food)
3
ANIMAL CELL
PLANT CELL
4
Parts of the cell:
• __________________________ : controls all the cells activities
• ______________________ : jelly like and holds organelles in place
• _______________________ : uses oxygen to breakdown sugar and make energy
• __________________________ : stores water,food and waste
• _______________________________________________ Transports material
• __________________________: packages and transports proteins
• ____________________________________ : separates the inner parts of the cell from the surrounding environment
5
The next two organelles are found only in plant cells:
• _______________________________ : provides protection
• _______________________ : contains pigments called chlorophyll which gives the color to plants
Using pages 174 and 175, you are going to work with a partner to discover how organelles in a cell are related to parts of a city. Fill in the following chart as you work.

Common to
Living Things
What you will learn:
- About life functions common to all living things
- About the differences and similarities between photosynthesis and cellular respiration
- About some major human organ systems
- About some of the technology used to monitor life functions
Topic 9.1 – Life Functions Common to All Living Things
- All plants and animals share many of the same ___________________________________
o ______________________________ (moving the organism, its parts, or its internal materials)
o __________________________________ (producing or obtaining food)
o _____________________________________________ (building and repairing body parts)
o _________________________________________ (making new cells or a new organism)
o ________________________________________ (responding the changes in the environment)
o _______________________________________ (breathing, digesting, and eliminating wastes)
o __________________________________ (directing cell activities to create needed substances)
Cells and Tissues are specialized
- Cells, tissues, organs and systems are all designed for their special jobso They are ______________________________________
Examples:
13
- An animal’s digestive system contains all of the organs necessary to take food and change it into a form the animal’s body can use.
- A plant’s root system includes a primary root, secondary roots, and root hairs. The root system brings water and nutrients into the plant from its environment.
SURVIVORS ACTIVITY:All plants and animals have to respond to changing conditions in their environment. For example, a dog pants
when it is hot. In this activity, you will research some other ways that plants and animals adapt to survive.
What to do: 1. Research at least 7 other unique ways that plants and animals respond to changes in their environment
Animal/Plant AdaptationSnails Snails become inactive during the hottest, driest parts of the summer
when food and moisture are scarce. This is called torpor.Bears During the winter, a bear becomes inactive to avoid winter food
shortages. Its heartbeat and breather slow. Its body temperature is lower than normal. This is called hibernation

Topic 9.2 – Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration
All plants and animals need a continual supply of energy in order to grow and function. Where do plants and animals get this energy?
- Plants need to make their own food in a process called ____________________________________- Animals obtain their energy from the food they eat.
Photosynthesis
- During photosynthesis, chloroplasts in green plants capture energy from the sun and store it in food molecules. This food is in the form of a simple sugar called _______________________
Storing Plant Food
- Any food that the plant does not immediately use is stored for later use
WHERE DO PLANTS STORE EXTRA FOOD????? Use page 184 to fill in the following chart:
Storage Location PlantStem
16
Roots

Have your food choices over the past few days been healthy or unhealthy? Why do you think so?
Did any of your choices fit into the food guide on the following page? In what areas do you need to improve?
26
1. Eat a variety of foods.
2. Eat a lot of whole grain cereals, breads, fruits, and vegetables
3. Choose low fat dairy products, lean meats, and foods prepared with little or no fat
4. Participate in regular physical activity
5. Limit the intake of salt, sugar, alcohol and caffeine.
Assessing Nutrients
• __________________________________: is a branch of science that studies foods and how the body uses them
• __________________________________: are substances found in foods that your body needs in order to maintain health
• You get nutrients from the food that you eat
Nutrients that you need27
• __________________________________ – in the form of sugar and starches are the primary source of energy
• _________________________________-build tissue and regulate chemical activity
• _____________________________-are stored in the body for use as an energy when carbohydrates are in short supply
• ___________________________________- organized according to whether they can be absorb in fat or water (E.g. vitamin B and C is water soluble)
- Scurvy, a disease among sailors, was found to be caused by a lack of vitamin `C
• ___________________________________________- help carry out life functions
(E.g. calcium (stored in bones), iron, etc.)
• ______________________________________________ - is essential
• _________________________________- occurs when essential nutrients are missing from a diet
Testing Food Nutrients:
- You can use lots of different things to test if food is nutritious or not- You can use brown paper to see if a food is high in fats.
o Example: Buttered popcorn in a paper bag…..
Use page 200 to fill in the following table about nutrients our body need…
28
Nutrients and Food Sources FunctionCarbohydrates
Proteins
Fats
Vitamins and Minerals
Water
29
Your job:
Look at the following food labels. It is going to be your job to decide which food is the best choice if you have your health in mind.
Bacon Cheerios
Chewy Granola Bars Microwave Popcorn
30
The Digestive System
• To obtain the nutrients that are in food, your body needs to break up the food into nutrients.
• This process is called digestion and was first researched by William Beaumont
• There are three processes of digestion:
– mechanical and chemical digestion, and absorption
• _________________________________________________- the physical work of your teeth and stomach breaking food into small pieces
• _________________________________________- the enzymes in your mouth, stomach and small intestine help break food down into smaller particles
• _______________________________________ – the small particles move into the bloodstream
Digestion
• ___________________________________ : Teeth reduce the size of food and mix it with saliva (which breaks down starches)
• __________________________________: Breaks down food and mixes it with gastric juices and special enzymes break down protein
• ______________________________________: most chemical digestion and absorption of nutrients (carbohydrates, proteins and fats) occur here
• ______________________________________: absorbs left over water, vitamins and minerals – also stores waste materials and undigested food (feces)
31
The Role of Diet
• Your body needs a good balance of nutrients at regular intervals
• Too many fats (animal fats) can cause:
– High cholesterol in the blood (heart attack)
– Hard work to burn them down
– Feeling ill or even throwing up
– Feeling tired all the time
– Weight gain
Skipping Meals:
• This can cause your blood sugars to lower
• You may become tired, dizzy, and unable to concentrate
32

Chapter 11: Maintaining Homeostatsis
Science 14
36
What you will learn:
- How diet and lifestyle influence internal
balance
- What happens when the body struggles
to maintain internal balance.
- About some technologies used to
maintain internal balance
- DNA
11.1 - What is Homeostasis? The ____________________________ around you is always changing, and as a result, the environment inside your body is always changing as well. Your body responds to temperature changes, stressful situations, increased physical activity and many other situations differently!
Just like a teeter-totter, your body can be balanced or unbalanced!
When your body becomes unbalanced, it will work extra hard to try to return everything to normal (balanced).
When a teeter-totter is in balance, we say it is in ____________________________.
The ability of your body to maintain an internal balance is called ____________________________.
Homeostasis helps maintain the proper conditions of life – all of the systems in the body (digestive, circulatory, respiratory, urinary, nervous, etc.) and all of the life functions work together to maintain homeostasis.
Remember our heart rate labs? What happened when the boys ran up the stairs?
___________________________________________________________________________
After 1 minute, was their heart rate higher or lower than it was just after they ran?
_________________________________________________
This is the body trying to maintain homeostasis! Your heart rate needs to be consistent or else you can experience pain, fatigue, ____________________________ and a consistently elevated heart rate can lead to death.
37
How does our body work to maintain a balance (homeostasis)?
Look on page 217 in your book and describe how each condition is kept in balance by the body.
Condition How it helps keep your body in balance:
Enzyme LevelsEnzyme = a substance that speeds up a process or reaction in the body
Enzymes control the release of energy from food molecules in the mitochondria
Waste Product Levels
Carbon dioxide is poisonous to our bodies – when we exhale, we get rid of carbon dioxide so we don’t get sick
Your kidneys filter your blood and get rid of wastes through urine
Concentration of Substances in the Blood
The circulation of blood to every cell in the body helps to keep the amount of oxygen, carbon dioxide, sugar, vitamins, minerals and wastes at the right levels.
Heart Rate Your heart rate depends on how much oxygen your body needs –when more oxygen is needed (during exercise or stress) your heart beats faster to deliver oxygen quicker
Water Balance Special hormones tell cells to take up or release waterHuman bodies are 60-70% water and need to keep a balance to maintain healthy cell activity.
Blood Sugar Level The level of sugar in your blood is controlled by insulin – insulin tells cells that they need to take sugar from the blood and use it to make energy.
38
11.2 – What affects homeostasis?Remember: the digestive and circulatory systems work together to maintain blood sugar levels, water balance, enzyme levels, and waste product levels.
Many things can interfere with these systems:
If the circulatory system transports too many _____________________, they can build up in arteries and cause serious symptoms including ____________________________
Lack of exercise can create many different problems in different systems Smoking can interfere with your lungs and how effective they are at taking in ____________________________
Take a look at Figure 11.6 on page 222. Examine the different health risks and explain the effects of each.
Factor Effects
Diet high in cholesterol and fats
Obesity
Smoking
Drugs
Lack of exercise
39
11.3 – When Your Body Cannot CopeSome people can eat junk food every day and remain healthy. Others struggle to maintain a balance. What is the difference between these people?
Lifestyle and genetics
Your health depends on your ____________________________ ________________as well as genetics – what traits you’ve inherited from your parents. Some diseases are inherited and some are heavily influenced by your lifestyle. Let’s take a look at some diseases that are common among teenagers:
____________________________
Diabetes can be a genetic disease – you can be born with it or inherit it from your mom or dad. However, an unhealthy
diet and lack of ____________________________ can lead to the development of diabetes at any point in your life.
People who suffer from diabetes have high levels of _____________________ in their blood and urine. This happens
because of a hormone called _________________________: this hormone tells cells in the body to take the sugar that is
circulating in the blood and turn it into energy. There are two types of diabetes:
1. Type I Diabetes (__________________ Diabetes): the pancreas no longer produces enough insulin to control the amount of sugar in the blood
a. This type of diabetes is usually diagnosed in children and is ____________________
2. Type II Diabetes: insulin levels are normal but the insulin is not recognized by cells in the bodya. This type of diabetes develops over time due to ____________________________
Treatments
There is no cure for diabetes – people with this disease must ____________________________ their diet constantly – eating too many foods with high sugar levels can put them at serious risk. Diabetics must take daily insulin shots, eat a ____________________________ diet and exercise regularly.
40
Ulcers
Ulcers are _________________ or breaks in the lining of the esophagus or stomach. Since the stomach contains a strong acid (hydrochloric acid, pH ~ 1) people with ulcers will normally feel a burning or aching in their lower chest region.
Most ulcers seem to be caused by ____________________________. Ulcers can be treated with antibiotics or different medications.
Eating Disorders – Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa:
Eating disorders are a result of ____________________________ and not genetics.
____________________________: people who suffer from this disease do not eat enough because they are afraid of gaining weight. No matter how thin they are, they constantly view themselves as being fat. As a result, they ignore hunger signals, restrict their food intake and compulsively ____________________ to get rid of “excess weight”.
Anorexia nervosa is most common in young people, especially young women. However, it is possible for young men to suffer from this disease as well.
____________________________: people who suffer from this disease eat too much and then force themselves to vomit in order to get rid of the food before it digests. Some people may take laxatives daily to get rid of the food faster. This is why bulimia is known as the “_____________________________________” disease.
These forms of purging can decrease body fluids and nutrients and can also affect heart function. Repeated vomiting damages the esophagus and breaks down tooth enamel due to the large amounts of ________________ in vomit.
41
Some people with eating disorders die of ____________________________; others suffer from malnutrition and an increased number of infections.
Treatment: treatment for eating disorders involves education and ____________________________. Many people who suffer from these diseases will remain hospitalized for an extended period of time in order to get healthy, and often antidepressants are prescribed.
____________________________
A heart attack occurs when blood flow to the _________________________ that supply the heart with blood is restricted. The heart won’t receive enough oxygen and will slow down or stop pumping all together and heart tissues will die.
When the heart stops, it’s called __________________________________. People experiencing cardiac arrest must be treated with CPR or electric shock immediately to start the heart as soon as possible.
Heart attacks can occur as a result of genetics or lifestyle – people can inherit a tendency to develop blocked arteries or suffer from _________________________________________. Diet and exercise can also influence the likelihood of a heart attack.

a. What is a stroke?
b. What are the signs that someone is having a stroke?
c. What causes a stroke?
