Use the Top Dog activities to practise your X tables. It is on our class page and called ‘Wednesday 27th January – Top Dog Times Tables Activities. The Answers are there too but don’t peek until you have completed the work.

LO: Can I collect data and create a table?

Step 1: You are a chef and need to collect data about your customers’ menu choices. So, your first step is to create a menu with three starters, three main courses and three desserts.

Here is my menu. You can use this or create your own.

Menu

Starters

Spicy parsnip soup

Baked camembert with crusty bread

Prawns with avocado

Main Courses

Beef bourgignon

Salmon in puff pastry

Roast chicken with stuffing

Desserts

Chocolate profiteroles

Apple crumble and custard

Raspberry cheesecake

Step 2: Ask your family to tell you what their three choices would be. You could also phone your friends and other relatives, so you have at least six lots of data. Think carefully about how you will keep a note of what they choose.

Step 3: Create a table to show your results. My table would look like this.

You could present this in your Maths book or create it on a computer, then print and stick it in your book.

Name

Starter

Main course

Dessert

Greg

camembert

beef

crumble

Tom

soup

chicken

profiteroles

Ollie

soup

beef

profiteroles

Sam

camembert

chicken

cheesecake

Holly

prawns

salmon

profiteroles

Eliza

soup

beef

profiteroles

David

soup

beef

crumble

Step 4: Now write three questions about your data.

Here’s two examples of questions I could ask.

Which two people have made the same choices?

Which dessert is the least popular?

Hot Questions

1. Whitney has used a key of 1 egg picture = 5 eggs whereas Teddy has used 1 egg picture to represent 10 eggs.

You could give various answers, but you must explain why.

2. a) 60 pupils

b) She only counted the groups of 5 votes and forgot about the 1s.

c) If you chose to change the key so that 1 sunshine represents 2 votes then half a sun could represent 1 vote. I think this would be a more appropriate key. If you use Victoria’s key you would need to draw one-third, one-quarter and one-fifth of a sun.
